- Windows XP Update >> SP2 Time DelayI'm not sure if people who are posting messages referring to XP slow down are
talking about the same thing but since installing SP2, I get the following
problems on a regular (every 15 minutes or so) basis:
* Select an item and right-click on it - the pop-up menu takes up to 30
seconds to appear
* Select an item and press the 'DEL' key - the 'are you sure you want to
delete this item' dialog takes up to 30 seconds to appear, even for small
files
* Select an item and press 'CTRL-C' - the hour-glass symbols appears for up
to 30 seconds (even on text files < 1kb) and the windows displays "Not
Responding" in the title bar - then after 30 seconds everything continues as
normal
You get the idea!
The system returns to normal after uninstalling SP2, but it's a works
machine and it's a company policy that SP2 should be installed.
Any ideas?

that chage the IP for blank spaces, in other words i don't have Ip config any

- Windows XP >> Screen Saver on XP EmbeddedI need to change the screensaver settings on 500 thin terminals running
windows xp embedded. I am attempting to do this via a login script
which imports the following registry keys:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control
Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaverIsSecure"="1"
"ScreenSaveTimeOut"="300"
"ScreenSaveActive"="1"
"SCRNSAVE.EXE"="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\logon.scr"
The import is successful, but the screen saver doesn't work unless you
do one of the following:
1. from the display applet in the control panel, goto the screensaver
tab. The settings are grayed out, but they are correct so i know the
import was successful. If i click cancel, it still won't work, if I
click OK without changing anything, it will start working.
2. Log off and log back on and it will start working. Once the
terminal is rebooted, it's back to the beginning as all changes are
wiped out on reboot.
I need to know if anyone is aware of a way to refresh the screensaver
settings from a script after the reg keys are imported.

- Windows XP Security >> Windows security screen screenshotWe're trying to make a handout to give to users to allow
them to change the local admin password and need a
screenshot of the "Windows Security" dialog box that comes
up when you press ctrl alt del. We are unable to do a
print screen and were wondering if anyone has a screenshot
of the box or a way for us to do it.

- Windows XP Security >> Runtime Error and net.exe2 things.......1) Far too many "Runtime Error" warnings
when going from one page to the next in IE.
....2) When I shut down the computer I get an error
warning "net.exe" not working or something to that effect.
Any help would be appreciated. Haven't found anything in

- Windows XP Hardware >> Windowsxp boot image faded on boot, gets stuck, have to push reset to boot againOdd behavior from my computer. Push button to start computer, goes through
the process until it gets to the "Windowsxp" screen with the multicolored
letters and the little bouncing back and forth blue progress thing and the
monitor is faded with this image and then it gets stuck there. I have to
push reset and then it boots up but stops at the screen where it ask you to
boot safe, normally etc and gives 30 seconds to decide. Any ideas? Don't
think it is the monitor, maybe the video card or motherboard.

users folder), %computername%, %systemroot%, %username%, %os%...does anyone
know all of them?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> sfc /purgecache doesnt workHi ,
When I ran sfc with /purgecache switch I've got an error "Windows File
Protection could not purge the file cache. The specific error code is
0x00000005 [Access is denied]." My user account is a member of the
Administrators group. Any thoughts?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Internet speed and CPU usageMy computer is running OK on Windows XP, but I have a
problem with the time it takes for a windows page to come
up. In have DSL service. When I open Windows explorer
and each time I move from one page to the next, the
computer runs at a speed well below that of dial-up
service. My ISP has worked with me and has run tests
that show that there is no problem with their service in
terms of the speed of data to my computer. When I move
from one page to the next, The CPU Usage graph in Windows
Task Manager flat lines on 100% until the next page comes
up. It can take as much as a couple of minutes for me to
move from one page to the next. Has anyone run into this
problem and if you have, what was your solution. My
computer is a 1.6 mhz Pentium IV running Windows XP home.

- Windows XP Setup >> installation component missing!two problems:
1) when installing the hard drive from within winXP
installation it says: "the file 'txtsetup.oem' not found".
2) while installing windowsXP, it formats the hard drive
and partitions it, reboots to do the actual installation
of WinXP, it creates the file folders, prompts again for
installation of winXP, and then gives the error: "
windowsXP could not continue installation because one of
the components needed for installation [itself] was not
installed ........ one of the parameters was wrong ". at
this point a sign comes up showing 2 out of 5 steps are
done, and it is stock on the third [XP installation].

- Windows XP >> bootable CDsI have some CDs with my xp system that aren't bootable. How do you make
a CD bootable in XP mce? Is there a batch file or something that marks it
bootable?

- Windows XP >> Networked printer suddenly sticks in queueSETUP:
I have a network with a desktop connected to the router, and two
laptops that connect wirelessly. All systems are running Windows XP Pro,
and are all set to the same workgroup. The desktop has a Lexmark Z45
printer attached via USB, and the printer is shared.
PROBLEM:
Everyone was able to print to the shared printer, but recently, the
laptops can send a print job, but it just sticks in the queue. The
desktop can still print, after you wait for the queue to clear out, of
course.
HAVE TRIED:
I have uninstalled the printer from all three computers, downloaded new
drivers (just fresh ones, there weren't updates), and set it up from
scratch again. Everyone sees and connects to the printer with no issues
and the desktop can print....but the laptops' jobs still get stuck.
Any suggestions?

a mate of mine has asked me to look at his laptop, and ive come accross
something very bizzare
it comes with a PCMCIA wireless network adapter, only thing thats on it is
model nuimber wa1220, funny thing is that it will only connect to my router
when the laptop is running on batteries, and as soon as i plug in the AC
power it disconects again, the card still works as it can see my network, it
just cant connect to it
anyone got any ideas on this one, ive been googling all night but found
nothing even remotly close to this

Laptops have different power usage settings when either connected to
external
power or on battery power. You might check those settings, maybe you
have it
set to turn off on external power.

yeah i tried all of the obvious places and really there nothing in there
that suggests anything like you say, tahts what i was first looking for but
i think theres a bigger problem with ACPI on this laptop now
its an advent 7017 Laptop and its got SP2 in it, from what i can work out it
doenst like sp2

- Windows XP Network >> 3 WinXP Home Computers Can't Share FilesI have tried everything I can think of to get 3 WinXP Home Edition computers
to see each other to share files. They can ping each other, they can access
the router (a simple D-Link) and all can access the Internet. I have
confirmed they are all in the same workgroup and I have checked NetBIOS and
Computer Browser service is running. I setup networks all the time
(fortunately not XP Home!!!) and am stuck. No firewalls are running, no
Internet Security software and nothing in the router is setup other than
DHCP.
If you browse the network on any of the computers, they only see their
computer and no others are shown. I can not map a drive even using UNC to
map the path. I have virus scan and spyware checks and everything is clean.
Any thoughts???? Thanks!!!

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> problems capturing analogI downloaded WMM 2.1 bought Pinnacles Dazzle 150 that comes with it's own
editing app. I can capture video with that but I really would rather use WMM.
However, everytime I hit capture it says "camera not detected". I can still
capture with the other app??? If WMM is looking for a Firewire signal how can
I change that setting to analog??? It's not under options or capture???

Hard Drive in Windows XP PRO with the NTFS file system.
The formatting starts ok, but then seems to hang after
about 88-90 percent. Can anyone please tell me what
could be causing this? I have tried deleting the
partition, and then having the formatting add back in the
partition, but no luck?

internet file cache, and offline webpage cache? the
internet is not always accessible, so i like to download a
lot of webpages, but when i reach a certian amount of
files on my computer i can nolonger keep newly downloaded
cached files. i have plenty of storage space on my
computer, but for some reason my temp. internet files and
offline webpages will not go over a certian size. some
times when im syncing my offline webpages im prompted to
extend the size of the cache, is there anyway (like
through a registery key) to set those values manually, or
make them unlimited? thanks.

memory, & so now I have no use of the disc drawer at all.
It wont open & had a disc sat in there. I cannot restart
either. Total novice, what is going on, I am going crazy.

It has a Pent 4 Cpu 1.8GHz 512mb of RAM
I do updates regularly and have Norton AntiVirus 2005 on it as well as
various spyware guards. These too are updated and run regularly. I last ran
the Windows Update on Dec. 14th, 05. It took 3 updates, KB890830, KB905915
and KB910437. I shut the computer down for the night and the next day when my
daughter booted it upit started to shut down and reboot on its own. As it
turns out, it accepted 2 of the updates but not KB890830.
I can turn the computer on cold and it will cycle through to the Windows
page and then I get a blue screen with words real fast and then it just shuts
down and restarts and comes to the screen where it asks if I want to start in
safe mode. I can start in safe mode. I can start in safe mode with
networking. There is no specific time they stay on before they shut down.
Sometimes it reboots again. Sometimes the screen gets frozen in 'Windows xp'
other times it is in the scrolling safe mode words for a long time before it
starts up. I have tried to do a System restore in safe mode as well as when
it has booted to the regular screen. When it has been able to run all the
way through I get a message that says it cannot restore to that date, pick
another date.
If anyone can help me with this or has any idea of what route i should take,
short of reformatting, please let me know.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Changing HDI'd welcome some advice please. I have two identical HDs at present on
my AMD Athlon XP1800, 512MB, both 60GB 7200rpm MAXTOR 6L060J3 UDMA-133
EIDE with 2MB buffer. Although it's been so long that I've forgotten
exactly how I did it, they are partitioned as follows:
HD #1
-----
C: Win XP system 15 GB
D: Data etc 45 GB
HD #2
-----
E: Old copy of Win XP 15 GB
F: Data backup etc 45 GB
I want to replace HD 2 with a 200 GB drive, as I'm running out of
space. I'd then use the new F: partition for all my extra data, as
well as backup. Not sure if I'd make a new 'recovery' copy of Win XP
on the new E: partition; it quickly gets so old that its usefulness in
the event of C: failing is arguable. And (touches wood), in 3 years so
far I've never had to use it in earnest.
So, my question: If just physically remove and replace HD #2, using
whatever jumper settings I find on the old one, and reboot, will
everything come up OK? No surprises, no new partition letters to throw
me, no daunting error messages, etc?
Any practical advice would be much appreciated please.
