- Windows XP Hardware >> ATTN: ALL SONY VAIO OWNERS WITH WIN XP OSMy Sony Vaio PCG-V505BX arrived yesterday. It comes with Win XP home
edition. I noticed that a few times, even when I turn the laptop on for
the first time last nite, the system would hang for no apparent reason.
Sometimes, the system even hangs at the Win XP splash screen when it's
restarting.
I formatted the HD and put on Win XP Pro. Same result but not as often.
I did a search on google and I noticed quite a handful of posts from
Vaio owners with Win XP having similar issues.
Has anyone tried contacting Sony to address the issue??? There seem to
be some sort of compatibility problems with Win XP. If you are reading
this, please post in this thread or send me an email.
As I type this, I am in the process of install Windows 2000 Pro on the
laptop. Hopefully I'll have better luck.

- Windows XP Support >> Removing ProgramsWhen I go to add/remove programs in my control panel, it will not let me
remove most of my programs. I am trying to remove a program. And it worked
fine last night. But my computer automatically updated itself while I was in
bed, and when I got on the computer this morning, I couldn't use my program,
so I wanted to remove it. I went to try and do that and it won't let me. I
don't know what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I went to download latest security update (KB912919) and it will not

disappeared from my Help and Support page leaving only the place markers
where the text should be.

- Windows XP >> Problem with booting XP.Hi all
I had Win ME on my system until I upgraded it to XP.
Obviously this is a big improvement but when I boot XP, I
get the same error twice before being able to start it up
properly. The error is something like
system32/config/system is damaged - it also says to use
the Windows Setup disk to repair the file by
pressing 'r' at the first screen.
I have figured out these are instructions from the old ME
system - if I reboot with the old ME disk, the 'r' is
for 'recover' which I obviously don't want to do unless I
want to take a step back in time.
My XP disk doesn't offer an 'r' option at the first or
any other screen.
Hence why I think there is somethign in my booting up
sequence pointing to an ME file.
Any thoughts ?

- Windows XP Support >> Need help with Max File Name LengthI am currently managing a small network and have run into a very interesting
problem. My users are very well organized and love long file names. I was
trying to xcopy some folders to the network when xcopy gave me the
insufficient memory error. I tracked this down to the fact when they created
a folder it was not over the 255 limit when mapped starting as the root, but
once you add the //servername to a UNC for copy the folder is outside of that
255 limit. A friend of mine told me I could restrict the max path or ma file
name length in the registry, but I have been unable to track that down.
Please help me out.

- Windows XP Network >> Problems with File and Printer Sharing AccessI am having a problem with my network. The other computer cannot access my
computer because it says it requires a password to access the connection.
However, I do not have a password, and I tried all possible passwords it
could be just in case for some reason there was a password. Like I said
though, there is no password. I did use the Network Setup Wizard on the
other computer so it could connect to the same workgroup and get all the

- Windows XP >> Spooling problemHi,
There have an HP LaserJet 2200d which is shared on our LAN. Each time
clients send non-English documents to this printer, an error causes on the
spooler and the printing is canceled. There is no problem for English
documents. Also, when I manage the windows to send the document to the
printer without printing, everything is ok. There are enough memory for
spooling (at least 5GB). And restarting the print spool service in not
effective. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Mehrdad

- Windows XP Hardware >> Write Delay FailureI was wondering if anyone has encountered this problem. I
have a Maxtor 160G SATA HD and I get write delay failure
error message shortly after booting up. I can see the
drive but 10 seconds later the drive disappears and the
write delay failure error is shown. I am able to see the
drive every time I reboot but it always disappears shortly
afterwards.
Anyone with suggestions as to why this is happening? I
have checked many forums and many users seem to have
different reasons why they occur. This was not the case
for about 3-4 months back. Just a month ago, I re-imaged
the pc and afterwards, it started to show up for no
apparent reason. I haven't done anything such as
disabling services. Everything is at default just as it
is after installing WinXP and update patches (including
SP1).
I am at a lost. Any help from anyone would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

- Windows XP Hardware >> Intellipoint 5.0 a downgrade from 4.12I thought the newest Intellipoint software would be an
upgrade from the previous 4.12 version, but it is
terrible. One of the best features was removed. How in
the world are you supposed to assign keystrokes to the
buttons now? This was essential for many games. A big
disappointment.

- Windows XP Security >> Remote Registry Security - A bug?Can anyone help?
I was trying to access the registry on XP remotely using
MBSAFU. It was returning an error message. So, a bit of
digging turns up a KB artical 153183, which I look at and
check out.
Now, following the suggestions didnt work BUT, setting my
own security permissions on the registry key *sort of*
did:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\Wi
nreg
What I would have expected was for the local admin group
to give me permission to this key. It didnt. Nor did
adding my domain account. What did work was adding the
empty local user group.........!!!!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Any bright ideas, cause I think this reeks of
MS "Security" Bugdom.
Regards
JS.
ps. Responses by email please. Cheers.

- Windows XP Network >> Network Printer ProblemI have a HP Laserjet printer connected to my LAN network and was printing
normally from my desktop. Recently, I added a Linksys Wireless G router to my
LAN point and connected my desktop and my laptop to the new router. From that
point onwards, I'm unable to print. The printer is added to my desktop and
laptop but still cannot print. I did a ping test to the PC where the printer
is connected and the test passed.
What could be the problem? Please help.

These devices connected and work fine on the old PC.

- customize >> Is it OK to delete these reg keys?A registry cleaner (RegSeekerXP) found some keys in my registry in
which there was no programs named.
For example:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{198EB59B-ADE2-AD71-B0DB-80095435168C}
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{C42E48F7-2205-4399-B05C-B3E194F57D67}
Is it safe to delete these keys?
Does it make a difference to performance if the keys are left in the

If so, what should I do?
My home computer was WinXP home. Those at the office have WinXP Pro.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Ctrl-Alt_Del/ Task Manager not working-help?My ctrl-alt-del does not work. This just started
happening on my pc today--i am on windows xp. I had two
viruses on my pc this week (MS Blast, SoBig), but got rid
of them both with virus scan software. Don't know if
this has anything to do with it. When I hit ctrl-alt-
del, the task manager window comes up for 2 seconds and
then goes away. I cannot get the task manager window to
stay up on the screen for more than a second or so, nor
can I access it from the task bar.
Anyone know what is wrong??!
