- Windows XP Security >> local sharing and securityHi, I have created another user with limited
administration on my fat32 XP system. I would like to
know how to make folders and subfolders private so that
only I have access i.e.: C: drive, my pictures etc..
I have tried ticking\unticking the use simple file
sharing in tools>folder options>view tab so that I enable
the "grayed out" make this folder private box. But was
not successful.
Because when I tick the "do not share this folder" on
sharing tab or web sharing tab it does not work. Meaning
I log under my sister account that I have created for her
I can still read>edit>delete anything I basicaly want on
my administartor folders which I have selected not to
share to begin with.(or is this normal?)
Can you explain to me on how to I go about not sharing
anything on my side of my account, keeping in mind that I
have already right clicked on folders that i do not wana
share. Because the "make this folder private" is grayed
out! Can you please help with this one, thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> emulation of past windows versionI once heard that Windows XP can emulate older versions of
Windows, making this OS a gamers dream. Can this be done
and if so, how do you do it? I'm not trying to do any

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

- Windows XP >> How can I open Windows Explorer using a keyboard shorcut, WITHOUT it defaulting into Full-Screen mode?WindowsXP Pro (SP2)
Hi
How can I open Windows Explorer using a "keybard shortcut" WITHOUT
explorer defaulting straight into Full-Screen mode?
I've now spent quite a lot of time on this... and it's driving me
bl**dy NUTS.
All I want to do us be able to
- use a hot-key combination, to
- open up WindowsXP Explorer
- in my directory of choice,
- WITH the folders visible (in LH column)
- but WITHOUT it being in "Full-Screen" mode !
I have even tried opening explorer by using a short-cut to a batch file
which then contains something like
%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, c:\docs
And although this DID work for a while... Suddenly every time I use
hotkeys to open a directory they are in bl**dy FULL SCREEN mode.
So I keep having to hit F11 to get it back into "Normal" mode every
single time. :^[
Is the way you close the previous ms Explorer view relevant, here?
i.e. If you set it to the correct sort order you want... and then hold
down Control when you click the top right "X", then next time
Explorer opens is seems to keep your previous sort order...
Sorry for starting a second thread on this but I have now simplified
the definition of what the problem is... and I am getting desperate!
Any suggestions?

Let me jump onto the bandwagon by telling my experience with winupdate
version 5 - I foolishly installed onto my system. V5 showed me a number of
hotfixes totalling around 2.9 MB but after starting the download it appeared
that BETA Service Pak 2 had been marked for download as well without my
consent (knowledge). Since those winupdates, once in progress, can NOT be
cancelled (downloading) and no one of the MVP eggsperts had an idea how
to stop this disaster, It was my joy to wipe my HD to come clean of the
situation. I dearly hope MS takes my unpleasant lesson to built an download
ABORT button into winupdate.

- Windows XP Hardware >> cd writer does not workHello. I have a problem with my cd writer. It is just an atapi 52x max cd writer. It came with the pc i bought early in 2003. The drive itself works fine, with it reading from cd's no problem. The problem comes when i try to burn a cd(data videocd music etc). it does not matter which software i use, roxio nero or winxp, it will just not burn
It will just come up with an error telling me that the media is invalid, or something to that effect. I have tried my blank cd's on other pcs and they burn fine, so it cannot be that. i have lowered the burn speed and still nothing.
Being as the drive still reads any cd i put in it, i would assume that it will just be a software problem, not hardware(hopefully).
Any help would be grea
Thank you in advanc

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB Mass Storage Device - This device cannot start. (Code 10)I just purchase an Iomega ext HD 160GB USB 2.0 . Apparently my Getaway PC XP
Pro SP-2 doesn't detect the new hardware. I tried installing the BIOS update -
as recommended - but still doesn't work. When i tried to add the hardware the
system finds it but at the end there is a msg that it could be added properly.
In devide manager it shows the yellow icon with exclamation sign. No letter
has been assigned and no way it shows in disk management.
Driver points to usbstor.sys . Gateway, PC is not much help, Iomega website
doesn't do much either and same scenario with Microsoft website.
I noticed, by searching the web, this problem is been around for a while. Any
idea how to correct a problem?
Thanks

Windows XP Update >> MS05-038 (896727) FAILURE Cum. Sec. Update for I.E. 6.0.2800.1106
The August 10th, 2005 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
(896727)
Security Update MS05-038 for I.E. 6.0.2800.1106 (latest) crashed my
operating system on my 98 SE computer. Immediately upon installation, I.E.
failed. Upon reboot, the system reverted to its' original registry and began
reestablishing hardware profiles for USB connections, monitor, parallel and
mouse ports. Many software connections were lost including Norton Anti-Virus
and Canon zoombrowser.
I won't be installing any more Security Updates for 98 SE any longer. I
have two backup H.D.s for my system just in cases like this. Obviously,
Windows doesn't care whether they crash 98 SE systems so they put out
critical updates for downloading which were not tested.
I am a 21 year computer vet who also runs 2000 and XP Pro in my office (and
two other computers in my home). I know something about computers but am not
a tech. I like 98 SE but cannot trust MS to provide secure performing
critical updates.

Do whatever you feel is right. I highly suspect that NAV's Real-Time
Protection was running during the updates's install and that was the
cause of the issue. There appears to be issues doing IE Cumulative
Secruity Updates with Win9x systems that have NAV installed.
Was the update installed automatically or did you use IE to visit
Windows Update ?
FYI, it installed fine on my Win 98 SE and Win ME system. The update was
downloaded manually and IE was not open during the install. NAV not
present on either system. eTrust was and it's real time protection was
not disabled.

- Windows XP Network >> VPN not 100% functional when using wireless adapter to connectHi!
I am having a hell of a time trying to figure this one out.
First the environment:
1. I am using a Linksys RV042 to VPN to my office network.
2. The office network has a Windows 2003 server which acts as file server,
DNS, and Domain Controller. (IP 192.168.1.111)
3. All client PCs are XP SP2.
4. RV042 is running the embedded firewall application and as far as I know
this is the only firewall protecting my office network.
5. All the client PC are running Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.
6. I establish PPTP VPN tunnels (this is the only way I was able to get the
RV042 to assign the correct DNS address to the VPN clients).
7. All computers (server and clients) have the latest Windows updates.
8. The RV042 has the latest firmware available installed.
Now the problem:
There are a couple computers that will not be able to access the office
resources when VPNing using their wireless network adapter. These same
computers will have no problem accessing the office resources when VPNing
using the Ethernet LAN adapter. In both cases (wireless and wired LAN
adaptor) I have no problem establishing the VPN tunnel: using windows VPN
client I connect to the RV042, which will assign a dynamic IP to the computer
and 192.168.1.111 for DNS. As I said, with the Ethernet adapter I will be
able to access all the resources, i.e. exchange server, shared docs, ping
hosts, etc. However, when using the wireless adaptor I will not be able to
access any resource at all even though the computer is assigned a valid IP
address and 192.168.1.111 for DNS.
Things that I've done so far to try to solve this:
1. Uninstalled Windows Defender and turned off Windows Firewall: same
result; I can access office resources only when VPNing using the Ethernet LAN
adaptor.
2. Installed a different wireless adaptor: same result.
I don't know what else to do. Any ideas?
Is there any security configuration that prevents the wireless adaptor from
accessing networks through VPN tunnels?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Pablo M.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> display problemsall of a sudden my computer has display problems after
booting-up. the problem is very noticeable when i scroll
up or down and cuts my display windows horizontally with
narrow bars. i can usually get rid of this problem in
the short term by minimizing/maximizing (i.e.
refreshing), but even then fonts still have a blurry red
edge and any movement of the mouse creates a
multicoloured trail effect. this is very annoying and
sometimes leads to a total freeze.

aborted when 'Error 1324. The folder path 'My Pictures' contains an invalid

and/or a more recent version of Norton Antirus software.
Actions taken: ran a Anvir Classic virus scan (numerous files infected by
virus or unwanted software found and quarantened); Windows XP Chkdsk /f
(several bad sectors found and repaired on primary hard drive); Windows
Add/Remove and Start/Programs/Norton Antivirus 2000-2002 uninstall attempts
(failed, due to referenced error 1324); ran system restore (twice) but error
remains; Dell technical assistance unable to resolve problem, suggested
backing up files and reinstalling Windows XP SP2. Note: desktop (Dell

Can anyone suggest or recommend a simpler solution? Would appreciate any
