- Windows XP >> recent security patch breaks desktop.ini CLSID folder-app association and custom iconWe (the software company I work for) have been using a desktop.ini file
to (1) create a unique icon for the "library folders" used with our
application and (2) to associate these folders with our application so
that double-clicking on the folder launches our application and lets
our application open the library.
The desktop.in just looks like this:
[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
CLSID={our-class-id}
And then in the registry:
To assign an icon to the folder:
Key Name:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{our-class-id}\DefaultIcon
Class Name: <NO CLASS>
Value 0
Name: <NO NAME>
Type: REG_SZ
Data: path to our icon
To associate the folder with our application:
Key Name:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{our-class-id}\Shell\Open\command
Class Name: <NO CLASS>
Value 0
Name: <NO NAME>
Type: REG_SZ
Data: "path to our application" "%1"
Unfortunately, the most recent XP security patch has broken this.
According to <http://secunia.com/advisories/11633/>:
"The problem is that "desktop.ini" files may contain CLSID references
to arbitrary executables in the "[.ShellClassInfo]" section. This can
be exploited to execute arbitrary files with another user's privileges
when the user browses a folder containing a malicious "desktop.ini"
file."
Does anybody know if there might be another way to accomplish this? I
spent a lot of time making this work, and now it's broke!
Thanks

to delete a file. This only happens on the first file after booting (or
rebooting but not after logging off & on), all subsequent files delete in a
blink of the eye.
Everything else seems to be working fine. I can learn to live with it (I'd
rather not) but it is annoying.
Any (productive) suggestions appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Backing up windows updatesWIn XP Home, IE7, OE6, SP2,
A few Questions.
I've decided to reinstall XP to resolve a stack load of issues, almost
everything on my PC is backed up to a seperate ext' HD.
Because my version of XP is a retail upgrade from 98SE, I find it a choir
having to keep installing both disks when asked, I have both disks but is
there a way of re-installing XP simply from the XP upgrade disk or must I
have both disks to hand?
Once I have XP home installed, is there a way of making a recovery disk, (
not floppy), and if so, should I first update IE6 to IE7 and install SP2 then
make the recovery disk?
My thinking is simply that in the event of something going amiss, instead of
me having to re-install XP, I can just recover to a fresh desk top.
I religiously keep up with my Windows updates on top of anything SP2 had to
offer.
If I go to control panel, add/remove, I can see all the window updates, hot
fixes and so on, can I back these up and if so can I do so as a whole group
and then re-install after I have re-installed XP?
IE7 favorites, I try to keep this in order and fail, I have lots of folders
with different links in, but if I scroll down, I have 40-50 single favorites
not in folders.
How can I back up and reinstall my favorites and these 40-50 diffrent links?
Last time I had a crack at this, ( I've forgotten how ), I managed to export
and import but found after reinstalling the back up every single folder and
the links they contained had to be transfered indevidualy, a daunting task if
ever.
Outlook Express, same question as above really, I have thirty odd folders
each one has a many messages/details in, I need to back these folders up and
re-install simply.
Can I do all the above within XP or is there freeware I can down load?

Windows XP Setup >> Can I replace *only* "hal.dll" if I move a HD to another computer?
Hi all,
I'm wondering if I'm missing something...
I have a computer that currently has an "Advanced Configuration and
Power Interface (ACPI)" HAL. I want to move it's hard disk to a
machine that has an "ACPI Uniprocessor" HAL.
I was thinking I could "sysprep" the computer with "mini-setup"
checked, then replace the hal.dll file from a different "ACPI
uniprocessor" computer before booting the hard disk in the other CPU.
But, that didn't work...
Yes, I could reinstall Windows at this point, but I'm curious if
there's more to just replacing the one "hal.dll" file to get it to
recognize the new computer hardware using the method above.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Actually, I got no error at all -- it's just that the sysprepped
harddisk never started to run the "mini-setup".
Just a black screen overall. Which makes me wonder if I missed
something else (like deleting files in the \windows\repair directory.)
If I boot into safe mode, I get the message that the mini-setup can't
be run in Safe mode, so I'm stuck.

As a follow-up to my own question:
Do I need to replace:
hal.dll
ntkrnlpa.exe
ntoskrnl.exe
To do this? I only tried replacing "hal.dll"...
The properties for "Computer" in the device manager show me that these
3 files make up the "driver", so maybe that's what I missed?

Rember the movie 2001? He's back. I do not know if you intended to simply remove an HD from one machine, withs its OS and data intact, and place it in another system, or what the current status of your situation is. I do know that the three files listed in Device Manager "drivers" can only be changed by selecting an available HAL. Perhaps you know that. If not, open Device Manger, select your ACPI Machine, right click, update drivers, use the opened Hardware Wizard and select the second radion button (Advanced) > next select DOn't Search > then check Show Compatible Hardware. Hopefully your choice will be there. If so, you are in luck. However, when you go back into Device Manager to look at the files, it will still say, always say, HAL !! good luck.

Steve,
if all else fails, you can still do a repair installation by
booting from the install CD, selecting install, selecting your
current installation, which should be presented, then select to
reinstall XP over that installation.
This should keep all your software settings and installed
software, but adapt the system to the new hardware.

Actually, I found my issue. I was trying to load what I thought was an
"ACPI Uniprocessor" set onto an "Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface" computer.
Problem was, something had toggled my set to "ACPI Multiprocessor" so
both the hal.dll *and* the "ntoskrnl.exe" file had to be replaced --
not just "hal.dll".
Once I did this, then everything worked. Which is really good. It
means I can write up a batch file for post-load processing instead of
having to maintain 3 different load sets.

EMail@HideDomain.com
We "sysprepped" the machine.
Then we boot from a CD that lets us select a batch file that basically
just replaces the "hal.dll" file with the appropriate hal.dll file from
whatever hardware we are installing it on.
For what we have here, when we install the ACPI *Uniprocessor* HAL and
the single-processor "ntoskrnl.exe" file, the OS automatically is
picking up that it's a multi-processor machine (or, more likely a
"hyperthreaded" machine) at startup and changing things to ACPI
Multiprocessor (and prompting for a reboot.)
Though, I don't see any reason why doing it *manually* wouldn't work.
You'd just have to extract these two files into "hal.dll" and
"ntoskrnl.exe" and put them into C:\windows\system32
ACPI Multiprocessor PC = Halmacpi.dl_
Multi Processor Kernel: NTKRNLMP.EX_
These would be in your i386 directory on your Windows CD.

Windows XP Setup >> Can I replace *only* "hal.dll" if I move a HD to another computer?
Hello Steve,
Not supported and there will probably be issues post setup.
Copying over the files does not properly install the correct machine type,
this is not a good thing to do for your systems.
You really should be maintaining separate images for this to work properly,
There is no guarentee that the machine will boot after swapping the files,
nor will all the options be present that would be in the machine type was
detected, plus there would be remnants of the old machine type settings
still on the system.
So behavior on these machines could very well be inconsistent

Windows XP Setup >> Can I replace *only* "hal.dll" if I move a HD to another computer?
Hello Steve,
You can use Device Manager to make some of the changes, only certain
changes are permitted.
read this article:
309283 HAL Options After Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 Setup
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309283
Installing is the best method for correctly detecting the hal and getting
all the setting correct on the system.
You have not installed the correct system type, you have only copied over
the files, the system may or may not boot.
If your case it does boot, that doesn't mean that problems do not exist
with these systems
Your systems are in an unsupported configuration.
You really need to create separate images for your different machine types,
that is the only supported way to deploy.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I had notebook with run by WinXpSp2
.
I had discovered that my laptop boot up time is increased and I want
to shorten it. Somebody suggested to check the event viewer and found
out that there are application errors amounting to 512 kb and viewing
the properties found these
Name: T size
Application log application error 512 kb
Security log security audit 64kb
System log system error 512 kb
What does this information means?
The application errors it says that when the capacity has reached 512
kb it can either be manually deleted, overwrite events when needed or
overwrite manually.
I would like know what is the best option for the three choices given?
Another suggestion was to Right-click "My Computer", Properties,
"Advanced" tab, "Startup and Recovery" Advanced button,
and change the two "Time to display..." settings to 5 seconds instead
of 30, and OK your way out
Could somebody give me some ideas?
TIA
Roy

- Windows XP Support >> WinXPsp2 Error 1508Everytime I turn on my machine I get an error 1508 saying insufficient
resources to load user profile. When I restart in safe mode it boots
successfully and then if I restart from there it boots correctly in normal
mode. It does this everytime.
I recently upgraded video card and am wondering if this could be a result of
insufficient power supply.
The only answer in the KnowledgeBase is that the registry is failing to load
because of insufficient resources.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> few computer problems.well I have a few problems just in addition to my computer running slow
lately. When my windows starts up it gives me the following error message
"the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150004). Click on OK to
terminate the applcation" for something called dlbtbmon.exe. and i also
receive that same message when I try to open my cd burning program "Record
Now" Also whenever I try to open a newer version of Windows Media Player, I
receive this message: "windows media player is not installed properly and
must be reinstalled" but i've tried this numerous times, only to receive the
same message. Because of this I cannot use any newer versions besides a very
old version. A few months ago I had a message on the bottom of my screen
saying something about a hard drive crash being possible, but then it just
went away. I've used so many different things to try to clean out my
computer and fix these problems, including registry mechanic, which i now
regret that i used because of what i read in other topics. Well any help
would be greatly appreciated, if I can think of anymore of the problems i've
had i'll post them here too. Thank you very much for any help.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Adding licensed music clipsI'm trying to make my first movie / slide show of my childrens' soccer
season. I bought and downloaded a song from a music web site which I want to
use as an audio clip for backround music, but when I try to import it into
Movie Maker I get a message that Digital Rights Management content cannot be
used in Movie Maker. I purchased the recording of the song and the license
which goes with it. The song will play on Windows Media Player, but I can't
use it in my home movie / slide show. Is there a way I can use any of these
purchased songs?

- Windows XP Support >> Wallpaper Changer Power Toy skips images!Lately, as Wallpaper Changer advances through images, it has been skipping
over large blocks of files. It only happens in one folder, which has 1,120
image files. So I'm wondering if there is an upper limit on the number of
files the program can manage in a single folder. Does anyone have any
knowledge or insight about this?

- Windows XP >> Upgrade 98 to XPI distribute an Access Runtime application. When
installed onto a full licence W98 machine the application
works fine. When installed onto a full licence XP machine
the application also works fine. However when clients
UPGRADE their Windows operating system, say from W98 to
Windows XP, the runtime application FAILS? Are there
crucial Windows files missing on upgrade on which the
Runtime application is relying?
