Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a

I tried reinstall WU service as adviced here:
On a freshly rebooted computer, do this as first thing:
Start regedit.exe and delete the following key (contains the WU
service configuration):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
Do a reboot again.

- Windows XP >> 2nd Router detected - should I be worried?I attached my pc to a new router and got a message from the router saying a
third party router on my pc. My anti virus software (mcafee & Antivir) does

Clearly there is something on my pc acting as a router - is this normal?

Can anyone explain this and offer a solution?

- Windows XP Network >> VPN Sub NetsI have just upgraded from Windows 98 fo XP Pro and I am
having a problem with
my VPN.
I can connect to the network but I cannot see any
workstations on the
network. If I know the name of a workstation I can enter
it but I am trying
to make a new network connection and cannot.
When I connect via the VPN I get an automatic address
which fits in with the
sequence but the Sub net Mask is different and although I
can put in a manual
IP address I cannot seem to change the Subnet Mask.
All was ok with windows 98.
Any help would be apprieciated.

'C:\DOCUME~1\WINDOW~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERefb5.dir00\sysdata.xml' it also shows

when i submit this report to microsoft it says the laptop has overheated, but
how could it over heat when its only just been started, yet i can leave it
running MSN messenger for hours and it will be fine? Any Help would be much
appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Newbie help needed!!!! Update is taking FOREVER....Please someone respond to this, as this is probably the only chance I
will get to post in a while. After downloading a Windows XP update, my
system has been extremely slow on startup. There was never a problem
before the update, and I had done all necessary virus scans.
I'm a newbie at everything PC related, so please bear with me. It is
clear that the problem must have something to do with the update, so
how do I uninstall the update (if there is such a thing?) If you have
step by step instructions that you could print in your response, it
would be greatly appreciated, as my system is so slow it took me
FOREVER to get on here!!! Is there any other reason this could be
happening, and why does it happen?
Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Won't remember Explorer window size [Win XP General]
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[Win XP Pro, V. 2002, SP II; FAT 32; Celeron-2.56 GHz; 256 MB RAM]
Have looked thru most of the relevant posts by now for simple solution to
this
issue but so far did not find anything 100% conclusive. So forgive my
skepticism
and repetitiveness. Perhaps the various MVP's devoting their time to this
issue
have by now come to a collective conclusion as to a simple one-fits-all
solution.
If you are fairly certain that one of your previous solutions is AOK (when
correctly applied, of course), please just refer me to that post. No need to
waste your time on another detailed answer. I know you have better things to
do.
Here goes:
-----------------------------------
Of late, after boot and when clicking Explorer icon on DeskTop anytime
thereafter,
Win Explorer directory windows keep coming up in 'midsize' configuration
(like I
want them to, because need 2 windows side by side on DeskTop) - except that
the
actual size nowadays is almost exactly as large as in 'maximized' view (full
screen).
I would like Explorer to remember to come up w/ half-size windows.
Don't recall messing w/ the 'Folder Options' (if that's anything to do with
it).
Did use 'Disk Cleanup' recently - which is why maybe now in I/E, when I
click on
the down arrow to right of Address bar, no history comes up in Address
window -
even after I first visited some sites. However, it does come up when I start
typing in it. Didn't change any 'Internet options' either.
Is there a way (like in some ".ini" file, in old days) to program Explorer
to come up
w/ exact size window I want everytime I click on it; or some switch I can
use(similar to the 'properties' command: "Explorer.exe /e", which causes it
to open at "C:\" )?
----------------------------------------
In an aside...
There are other, minor lingering as well as new oddities cropping up with
both
Windows and Word. Not sure whether this has anything to do w/ the issue at
hand.
The new ones started to appear after power supply replacement - though basic
output voltages measure within specified tolerances.
It's difficult to remember all of the annoyances now, as they are not v.
serious -
yet. For example, this morning there was an auto-reboot and subsequent
Scandisk as I ejected a CD while opening a file elsewhere (this particular CD
tray likes to
pop out on its own a few times in a row on occasion, until it finally gets
the
message to stay put. This sometimes happens when I put in a CD).
Yesterday eve, with no one on our small home net, except me, I temp lost a
web
page I was reading on line (temporarily got "This page cannot be displayed")
which
automatically returned after about 15 seconds. Never, ever, in all my years
and
non-stop daily errors, hangups, net problems, etc., on a variety of systems
and
Win OS versions - did I ever see that one before. Of course, this is my 1st
time on a home network.
Response, too, is often frustratingly slow, as if it was rummaging its
memory for
options, before deciding to respond to a click of the mouse. There were
other,
more irritating little incidents than those noted, in the past. I've got the
processor temperature trigger point set at 50 degrees C.
Thanx in advance,
Ted...

the help and support is saying the sound card is not connected/installed?
This has been working okay up until a day ago. We have been running virus

I am now wondering if we have deactivated the sound card by mistake. How do I
reinstall the sound card. Help required please.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Smart card reader brings winxp pro to a crawlWhen I plug in a USB card reader the cpu becomes utilised

- Windows XP Support >> Floppy, CD ROM, Zip Drive ProblemsI have Windows XP 5.1 (Service Pack 2) installed on a Genuine Intel PC
with 2.5 GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM.
Ever since May of this year, my floppy drive and CD ROM drive will only
work in Safe Mode. In regular mode, I get the message that the floppy
or CD are not formatted (although they are and can be read in Safe Mode
or in regular mode on my other PC). I get the same problem with my
Iomega Zip drive (although it doesn't seem to run in Safe Mode). I
tried to do a system restore but, for some reason, my system restore
points only go back to August. I guess it wasn't setting restore points
before that. There may have been a virus on the computer when the
problem first arose (in May) but we have been cleaning the the computer
with Spybot, AVG and AdAware since then and they have not found
anything lately although I always keep them up to date.
I also tried reistalling the Iomega driver but, while the
reinstallation ran without errors, it had no effect.
I noticed that an earlier poster to this group resolved the problem by
uninstalling !Conflicts in the System Devices section of the Device
Manager. I searched this section and did not find any !Conflicts.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,
Peter.

- Windows XP >> Registration and legalitiesI will be getting another computer shortly, (w/ NO O.S.)
and want to install XP PRO. I have many questions.
1)What to buy?...I see OEM, full oem, full retail. What
is the pro and cons for using or buying each? Which is
better?
2)Is a "full oem" version the same software as a full
retail?
3)Can I put XP on my new comp and then again on a third
one that I plan to buy a month later?
4)What is all the hype about registering. Can I install
and use the full software without registering w/Microsoft?
5)Can you still do live update without registering?
6)If I'm not allowed to use it on more than one computer,
that's fine, but how will they know? I ask this not so
much to use one copy for a million computers but in
curiosity on HOW Microsoft would KNOW...are they allowed
or have ways where they look into your computer (snoop)
and "verify" things??
7)If I buy a copy from EBAY or somewhere, what happens if
they lied about it not being registered. A friend told me
that it wouldn't matter as long as I just use it without
registering it. Is that true. How can I know if I have a
legal copy without necessarily letting Microsoft know
which copy I have?
8)If I want to also install Office pro 2003 do I need to
buy 3 copies for 3 home computers? That would be $1500
and seems a bit much (to put it nicely) for one poor soul
to put it on all his personal computers.

- Windows XP Network >> file sharing problemI have 2 machines running xp pro w/ sp2. They are connected through a
router. They used to share files just fine. Now machine 1 can access
machine 2, but machine 2 cannot access machine 1, although machine 2
occasionally "knows" machine 1 is there, it says it's not accessable. I'm
not sure if the problem began before or after I installed sp2.
I tried uninstalling sp2 from machine 1, and initially everything worked
until I rebooted - then same old thing. I have since re-installed sp2.
machine 1 runs mcafee firewall, and machine 2 runs norton internet security.
Both firewalls have the most recent updates, and are configured to use home
networking. Disabling them does not help.
Neither machine has problems accessing the internet.
