cleanmgr.exe is hanging

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> cleanmgr.exe is hanging A Puzzler:
Whenever I run the Disk Cleanup utility (cleanmgr.exe)
with my XP Home system, the initial screen never gets
past a few bars in the "scanning: compress old files"
stage.
Cancelling out does not end the process - I must do this
manually in Task Manager.
It just uses up memory and MEGA CPU power.
Nothing on Emachine's site.
Any ideas????????

OS: XP Home, SP1.
machine: Emachines W2785
processor: Athlon XP 2700+
Processor Speed: 2.16GHz
RAM: 480 MB

Line 48, Right column "Disk Cleanup - Compress..."
Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
