Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB I have flashed my BIOS to newest version. I have made some adjustments in
BIOS to CPU to get rid of RAM errors etc.

I just downloaded an update for SATA from MS for my RAID controller. There
is also an update for processor AMD K7 that I have not yet loaded. I do
have Athlon 2500 + and in RAID BIOS utility the BIOS & CPU are listed as
unknown.

Does the AMD K7 processor update apply to my Athlon 2500 + Barton?

Also I noticed that whey I restart XP Professional the general system
properties screen says Athlon (tm) XP--when I shut down the PC completely &
then boot back into XP the same screen will sometimes show only Athlon (tm)
without the XP? This is one reason why I was wondering if I needed the
update for the processor.

Any info would really be appreciated!

Windows XP322

Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB Isn't the K7 processor about 5 years old by now?

Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB I don't know. All I know is that it comes up as an update for Windows XP.
The date listed on the update is December of 2002.

The processor file that XP is using now is dated 7/2001. So it looks like
the Dec one would be newer if it supports the Athlon 2500+

Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB I have a Athlon XP 2600+ and pondered on the same question for a while. I
decided to try it out after making a restore point, it didn't seem to make
any difference apart from removing it from the windows update list.....

With regard to your SATA RAID I personally would only use device drivers
found on the manufacturers website & not MS. MS are likely to be generic and
not specific to the manufacturer you have and sometimes to more harm than
good.

Hope that helps
All the best

Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB You're probably thinking of the K6 line, which was a competitor to Pentium II and early Pentium
IIIs. The K7 is Athlon/Athlon XP, K8 refers to the Athlon 64 generation.

Lori, is this update you're talking about on Windows Update or some other website?

Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB The driver update is on the Windows Update site. From the date, it does
seem to be newer than the one currently used by Windows. I guess I can make
a restore point and go back to that if it does not work well, considering
that another user with a similar processor did apply the update and it has
not caused any trouble.

Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB Thanks for the info. I will watch it more carefully from now on--the update
did list the manufacturers name in it, so hopefully it will not cause any
trouble.

I have not hooked up another drive yet, so I haven't setup an array. At
this time, I only have access to RAID when my PC starts up--I did not
install the software GUI in XP.

Is it necessary to install the XP software for RAID or is it just as good to
not install it and just access thru F4 at startup? I didn't want to install
any software that was not absolutely necessary and I am not yet very
familiar with RAID.

Windows XP Hardware >> Athlon 2500 + Processor & NF7-S V2.0 MB Just F4 at start-up will do, the windows GUI program just lets you look at
the way the RAID is set-up.
I'm not sure you would need that once the config is up and running.

all the best
