- Windows XP >> Startup user selection vs small-fill-in-the-blankStupid question, but I forget how to get my initial screen to log in to go
back to the XP default showing the users (with a silly icon). I was messing
with settings to get sharing working within my subnet and inadvertantly got
the settings stuck with the rectangle wherein I must fill in my user name.
(such as when one has specific domain or netware apps to take into
consideration).
So how do I get the settings back to start up to show the user's names and
icons - wherein I can click and fill in the password?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Setup >> Display properties after SysPrepHello All
Has anyone seen this before?
I have a number of DELL Latitude laptops that have now
been rolled out with an XP image that has been
distributed using the SysPrep imaging method.
Once I boot the laptop up and logon with any network user
account I cannot view the Diplay Properties page properly.
Keeping in mind that we have a Group Policy in place that
hides all pages except for the 'Settings' page. We have
done this so users can change the screen size and
resolution when using projectors etc.
Local Administrator account can see all Display
Properties pages, but any user, including a user who is a
member of the local administrators group cannot see
anything in this 'Settings' tab, it is blank ???
So the Settings tab is there, but has nothing on it, i.e.
no Screen size settings, no Display resolution settings
no nothing, just a blank screen !!!
The Video chip on the DELL Latitudes is by ATI. I have
tried updating and reinstalling the Video drivers, but
nothing changes.
Do you know if this can be changed by hacking the
Registry or some other fix ???
your Help is appreciated

I guess that there is a small command corrupted in the registry. Can anybody

- Windows XP Setup >> Intermediate User having major problemI have a 5 year old Gateway , 1 gmhz, 512m Ram, Windows XP upgraded from ME.
All of a sudden when I click on Start/My Computer the icons that used to be

I have run Spybot/Lavasoft/Norton/Microsoft Beta/spyhunter and feel

And to add to this for some strange reason my "hide inactive icons' feature

Anyone have any suggestions? I really would like to have the icons for my

Windows XP >> Wrong MS Icons - Start Menu & Desktop
For the most part, my problem seems to be limited to Microsoft program
icons. Specifically:
- Start Menu: All program group icons and sub-groups are a generic
folder icon. Upon opening program groups, individual program icons for
non-Microsoft applications display properly (with a few exceptions, such as
some Norton SystemWorks apps). As a general rule, Microsoft program
applications appear as a generic blank page icon (with a few exceptions).
- Desktop: Icons for .wav files on my desktop display incorrectly (opens
with Windows Media Player). Similarly, a .doc file on my desktop is
represented by the same icon as that for the .wav files.
System is up-to-date with respect to critical Windows Updates. TweakUI's
"Rebuild Icons" repair utility doesn't resolve the issue. Norton AntiVirus
reports no infected files (current virus definitions) .
One other symptom possibly worth noting -- at times, right-clicking on a
shortcut or application requires a long time for the context menu to load
without other applications running -- 15 seconds (1.0 GHZ PIII with 768 MB
or RAM). Once the context menu has loaded for that item, subsequent
right-clicks are instantaneous.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Taskbar corruptionFrequently, when I log in, I find the separators on the Taskbar are in the
wrong places. It is not possible to put them right because some of them have
crossed over others and can't cross back. I can fix the Taskbar by deleting
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2\
in the Registry and re-starting Explorer; but it is getting to be a real
pain because it happens almost every time I log in.
Does anyone know what might be causing this, or how I can monitor my system
to find which program is doing it?

- Windows XP Security >> Broken PC-domain trust, forget local admin passwordI have something strange here !
I have a winXP Pro member of domain 2k.
BUT the PC - domain trust is brouken. I can see the computer in AD but I can
not manage it remotelyand I am informed that the trust between domain and
computer is broken.
I now need to gain access to manage the computer without formating it, so to
manage to unjoin and rejoin the PC from the domain.
The problem is that I dont know the local admin password !!!
I renamed the explorer.exe to logon.scr file (using an other PC), and I have
this system access.
I run the computer management mmc, but the reset password window does not
open.
I run computer properties, but the network indedification boxes are gray.
I can run cmd and regedit
Can anybody help me to reset local admin password ?
Thank you in advanced

- Windows XP Security >> Autocomplete not functioning...I also posted this under "General".
After reinstalling XP and installing all applicable
service packs and patches, autocomplete does not function
in IE. I am posting this under XP because I am also
having problems with the remember password option in the
POP3 setup in Outlook so I think this is a general XP
issue rather than being isolated to IE.
Here is what I have tried:
1. Verified autocomplete settings in IE GUI.
2. Verified auyocomplete settings in registry.
3. Disabled and reenabled settings.
4. Ran all steps outlined in KB # 306895.
The only step that resolved the issue was creating a new
user. The KB article referenced above suggests copying
the profile from the new user to the existing user if
this resolved the problem. However, I do not want to
lose the other settings the current account has.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Strange behaviour of Task Bar.Hello all,
I installed windows xp afresh and everything went fine.
The strange experience however is that when windows starts and settles down
all items (quick launch programs including "start" ) on the taskbar wont
react to any mouse click!! I will first have to click an item on the
desktop (like the Recycle Bin) to start before the "start" and other items
on the taskbar can be started with mouse clicks.
Alternatively, I will use CTRL-ALT-DEL for taskmanager and then immediately
close it in order to activate the taskbar.
Is there anyone with this experience? How is it solved?

- Windows XP Network >> Vista Networking ProblemI am running Vista RC1 on a client machine. It cannot connect to any server
resources (e.g. Exchange, LCS, etc.) but can browse the server and the

Any help on the issue would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Can't log inI just installed XP on a machine that had Win98 on it. It
never asked me for a password for the initial account, but
it created the account anyway. I just have no idea what

computer. I only have one log on option and I can't
figure out how to switch to administrator, even though I
never set up a password for that either.

- Windows XP Setup >> Desktop suddenly shrankI was tooling along with my laptop display set at 800x600,
when suddenly (it may have been a stray key combination)
*bam* my desktop shrinks to about 6 inches across.
I checked my display settings, and it still said 800x600.
If I jack it up to 1400x1050 and drag the corner of the
"screen," the desktop fills the laptop monitor again but of
course fonts, icons, graphics and windows are too small.
I've of course restarted and cold booted and it's the same.
I'm making do by jacking up my font sizes and setting
everything on "large icons," but some Web graphics and OS
windows are not sizeable and are almost unreadable.
Any ideas on how I can get the display back to normal?
Display looks normal on bootup, then shrinks as soon as
Windows kicks in.
Thanks for any ideas.

- Windows XP Support >> Need Help With DRMI recently installed Rhapsody Radio. It works fine except that when I
launch the program I get an error message telling me that the DRM files are
corrupt. Clicking on the "more info" link send me to Microsoft Article
810422. The I can not restore or back up the licenses. I've tried
following the instructions but it does not appear that I have a DRM folder.
A "find files" shows some DRM files and a folder, but none of the files such
as the "DRMv2.sst" is present...only a set-up file.
Also I tried visiting the website to restore the licenses...the button that
you are supposed to click is not active.
Is there nay way to fix this? I do not mind losing the music I have but I'd
really like the system to function correctly. Can I do a fresh install of
the original licenses? When searching I did see what looked to be some
back-up files but I'm not sure.
