- Windows XP >> FormatDoes anyone know how to format the C drive on XP? And if
so, I am assuming that my restore disk will re-install all
the programming on it?
I have got problems that occured with this before I even
bought the computer (new) where java was damaged and more
problems of the same so that whoever tried to repair it
gave up. Jan. 28th was a popular day for it and I did'nt
buy this computer until May... I'd like to format and
clean it up before I re-install, have tried running the
restore disk 4 consecutive times with no luck. XP is
loaded on the restore disk so I do not have the original
XP installation disk from Microsoft. Any ideas?
Win 98 was easy to format, XP is giving me headaches.

- Windows XP Setup >> DISK SPACE LOST ???First of all....
HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone.
I'm hoping someone can help me on something I have been working hours to get
a solution, with no results.
I'm trying to download some songs ... to DVD-RW (and to DVD-R).
On the DVD problem I'm having, it shows that the disk has 4488.06 MB ... and
it should show as near as 4.7 GB !!!!! It shows this on ANY DVD I have tried.
On CD-RW and CD-R, it is shown that the disk space is 702 MB.
I have tried using NERO, Roxio Easy Creator, and CDBurnerXP Pro 3.
How come the disk space for the DVD's is lost down to 4488 MB ???

Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

- Windows XP >> Administrative Tools Applet in Control PanelHey there,
Does anyone know the registry value and key location to change to
hide the "Administrative Tools" folder that is in the Control Panel?
I've looked around here, and the only answers I find are for the
Administrative Tools that appear in the Start Menu, which isn't exactly
what I'm looking for.
Thanks!

- Windows XP Support >> Blue Screen After Logging inWe use roaming profiles.
When an old server is offline, users get a blue screen (no desktop) after
logging in.
All the old shares were created on the newer server.
This morning, the old server is dead, users can't log in.
administrator can log in.
I can log the users in here at this location.
I disabled roaming profiles on one user, that didn't help.
I removed and readded the PC from and to the domain, that didn't help.
Any thoughts?

- Windows XP Setup >> user does not have access privilegesI recently "organized" my second hard drive by creating folders and
moving files to the appropriate folders. Now I can not access the
files (.docs, .pdf, .xls). I receive the following error message: user
does not have access privileges. My machine is a stand-alone single
user Dell XPS w/ XP SP2 and no network connections. I can't change the
properties on the files either, they appear to be read-only.
Thanks in advance,

- Windows XP >> Laptop Logoff Painfully Slow when a Kerberos Realm user is logged onA laptop logoff is painfully slow when a Kerberos Realm user is logged on.
When we setup Windows on a brand new Dell D420 and use an MIT Kerberos Realm
to logon, it takes about 10 minutes to log off later (sits on the "logging
off" window). When we do not have the laptop setup for Kerberos, then it
logs on and off very quickly.
a. We have removed all group policies.
b. We have tried the laptop in different OU's with different policies
enabled.
c. We have tried using our "standard" image for a D640 (with different
drivers installed).
d. We have tried a clean install of Windows from the Dell CD.
If we logon as a local domain or local machine user, it works fine. If we
setup Kerberos and logon as a MIT Kerberos Realm user, it logs on fine but
when it's time to log off it takes forever.
We have 150+ machines on our network, all using an MIT Kerberos Realm to
authenticate and only this one new Dell D420 has this problem, and only when
logging onto the domain using Kerberos Relam credentials.
Has anyone seen this before?

- Windows XP Network >> Direct Cable ConnectionI have a desktop and a laptop, both using XP Home. I
cannot make a direct connection between them, to share
files and printers, work. I continually get the message
that the modem in the laptop (the guest) is not working.
I use a serial cable between COM1 ports. When I look at
the modem properties, the system returns 'Unknown' for
the modem address, and I can't find a way to bridge the
internal modem from COM3. Can someone please advise what
I have missed out, even though I carefully followed all
the instructions in the wizards and on-line help?

- Windows XP Support >> file questionWhile browsing through files (In any way and any place) I find files that,
instead of folders by them, have a piece of paper with the right top corner
folded down and a picture of some kind on it. Are these damaged, turned off
and how can I repair them?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Analog video captureConnected a VCR via composit connectors to ATI AIW7500 using WinXP Movie Maker 2. I can see the video and hear audio but more than half the time I click Start Capture I get a file which has no video and only audio. Sometimes if I start a new capture collection it works and other times it freezes at 3kB total and not video. Have managed to capture an entire VHS tape once. Now I'm tweaking the brightness levels and cant get the software to grab video
Any thoughts
Thanks.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Defrag QuestionWhen I run Defrag, there is a huge gap between most of the stuff which is on
the left (the beginning) and a little amount which is slightly to the right
of the middle (see screenshot). Because this gap is always there, even after
I perform the defragmentation, I am assuming that the files that make up the
little bit on the right rarely get modified (although I can't be sure
because I don't know which files they are). I would like to have them in the
same area as all the others, because with such a huge gap my hard drive
could probably gain something from not needing to make that big jump for
such a small amount of data. Is there some way I can "trick" defrag into
moving these files, or some way I can find out which files they are without
any extra software? Thanks.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Audio noiseI am getting an annoying click whenever I play any type of media file with audio content (AVI, MPG, WAV, MP3, etc.). The noise occurs regardless of the source (CD, DVD, local hard drive, network hard drive, etc.). It also does not matter what application is being used to play the file (Windows Media Player, QuickTime, RealPlayer, Ulead Video Studio, etc.). It is a click that occurs at regular intervals approximately one second apart. The intensity of the noise is dependent upon the level of the audio passage in which the noise occurs. The noise is reminiscent of a scratch on a vinyl record. I have tried different sound cards. I have never before experienced anything like this. If anybody has any ideas, I would love to hear them (no pun intended).

Any Ideas?

Windows XP >> Want to get rid of MSN Messenger
Recently the MSN Messenger has appeared on my system tray and it
periodically pops up telling me that I need an important security update. I
don't actually use MSN Messenger, and having it there is probably an
unnecessary security risk. How do I get rid of it so its not running on my
system tray - or better still - how do I eradicate it from my system?

Windows XP >> Want to get rid of MSN Messenger
If you added MSN Messenger you should be able to remove it
with a add/remove. If you're trying to remove Windows
Messenger try this.

Hello!
1. shut down messenger if it's running
2. start
3. run
Type or paste the following command into the run dialogue box:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Now just click the "OK" button and messenger will uninstall
itself. This doesn't just prevent it from running, but
get's it off your PC.
With regards,

- Windows XP Hardware >> Computer freezes occasionallyHi,
One of the PCs here has recently developed this rather mystifying habit of
freezing sometimes.
It happens randomly and lasts for about ten seconds or so. Also, it can
happen anywhere from a few times within an hour to a few times in a day. And
it happens no matter what the application running on the machine at that
time. It was observed that even the screensaver freezes!
Virus, malware, trojans, spyware, adware...... were checked for. Also SFC
/scannow was run without any problems. So was chkdsk /r.
The hard drive was swapped with its "mirror" (a simple restoring the
standard back-up to a fresh drive) - the phenomenon still persisted. The
memory was swapped out too, to no avail.
Occasionally a clicking noise can be heard, like that of a hard drive
"waking up". This happened on both the original drive as well as the
replacement one. Motherboard power and drive time-out settings are selected
properly.
Someone suggested replacing the power supply.
Any suggestions on what to look for very much welcome.
Regards and thanks in anticipation.

- Windows XP Update >> Two questions1. I recently had a user get a virus so I checked (among other things) their
Auto Update setting and found that AU was off. So, decided to check rest of
workstations on network and found AU was on. BUT, decided to go check

was ON. Any ideas ?
2. If AU setting is to download at a time when computer is off, will it
"catch up" when computer is turned on ??
