computor. When I tried to access the internet a popup said that there was a
problem. so I restarted my computor and now after the desktop appears and as
soon as the zonealarm icon appears at the startup the computor shuts back
down to bootup again. What can I do to quickly stop the zonealarm app from
starting up. Any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated also.

- Windows XP Hardware >> 1394 Device (Hard Drive) Stop Working as Second DeviceWindows XP Home Edition. I have one 1394-2000 standard DVD firewire device,
and when I added previously working Maxtor 1394 160GB drive with 1394-1995
Std, the Maxtor Drive stopped working. I found MS article 894956 stating this
is a confirmed problem. However, the workarounds (either disabling
controller and then enabling or turn off power on Maxtor) doesn't bring the
Maxtor to life. I have 80 GB of stuff that I need to retrieve.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions on methodology or procedures.

- Windows XP >> Recovery of product key in unbootable WindowsI have a Dell machine that has a dead Windows. The drive is still good. I
can boot from a CD and see all the data on it. Obviously I need to reinstall
Windows from scratch using a generic OEM Windows XP CD, but I need to get
the key from the dead Windows. (The sticker with the key on the Dell is
missing.) So how can I recover the key from this dead Windows XP?

- Windows XP Support >> Unable to add local printerI have an XP laptop with all updates. I can add network printers, however,
my nephew is taking the machine to college with him, and would like a local
printer. When I try to add a local printer attached to this computer,
unchecked p&p, select using following port LPT1, then instead of a list of
printers, there is a message in the box that says unable to find any drivers
for this device (and of course there is nothing listed). I replaced the
drivers.cab from another system that works (gives a list of printers), same
thing. Not sure where to go next, and I really don't want to
reinstall....does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

- Windows XP >> Windows Explorer CrashesWhenever I open Windows Explorer and right click
on "properties" for my main disk "C" (40 GBytes) the
program crashes and then reloads. Sometimes it happens at
once, other times it takes a few seconds.
It ALWAYS happens:
- even after I do a diagnostic clean boot
- even after I have reinstalled windows from the CD
- even when I use Powerdesk instead of Explorer
- even after I have fully checked the disk with Norton
DD.
It does NOT happen:
- on my Disk D which is an external USB hard disk
- on any single or multiple directory within disk C
- on "My computer"
- on "My desktop"
I am running XP pro on a Toshiba 2435 laptop with 512 Mb
of memory and plenty of disk space. I've installed all
microsoft updates.
Has anyone else ever had a problem like this, or have a
suggestion of what else to try?
Thanks

Windows XP Support >> Screen lines/errors
My Screen just started displaying vertical and moving green & colored lines.
They're spaced a couple inches apart. It does not seem to be the monitor
because it's worked fine and is brand new.
You can get the lines to disappear momentarily when you close and refresh
any program window but then they come back, help! Thanks in advance, Erin
ps. I'm running XP home edition and have tried running the disk check but
that's all i know how to do.

A problem like this is almost certainly caused by one of the following four
things:
1. The monitor
2. The cable from the monitor to the video card
3.The video card
4.The video card's driver
It's unlikely to be the video driver, because you say the problem just
started, and software doesn't usually suddenly develop problems.
I would begin by making sure the cable is tightly connected at both ends. If
that's OK, I would most suspect the monitor, whether or not it's new. Borrow
a monitor from a friend and see if it fixes the problem, or try your monitor
on his computer to see if the problem moves with the monitor.

- Windows XP >> XP hangs for 2-3 minutes after loginI have a Dell I8200 which I have had for over 8 months
and never had this 2 minute delay after boot up until
now. The first time I noticed it was when after I was in
the Add/Remove Windows Components area. I was in the
Networking Services area and decided to add the Peer-to-
Peer component. That is when I started to have the
problem. I then removed the component but with no luck.
It still hangs up for 2 minutes after I have logged in.
I did notice that after I login, that I can quickly bring
up the task manager or one other program while it is
completly loading everything else. I also noticed that
while I am looking at the task manager looking at the
different things loading up that it locks up just about
at the end of loading everything. I was watching the
task manager in hopes of maybe seeing what files may be
causing this but I am not successful.
Does anybody have a real fix for this problem? I have
read many threads in Dell's community area but still do
not have any real fix for this problem. Maybe something
in the registry I need to tweak. I really have no clue.
Thanks for anyone who can help.

- Windows XP Network >> After shutdown modem and router ethernet remain open....Hi everyone,
I got 2 computers, 1 router, 1 modem, (wired connection) all connected and
up running... But here's where things differ. When I turn off both computers,
my XP computer ethernet connection and router light remain on. But, on my
Windows 98 computer the router light for it's ethernet cable turns off. It's
like it has an open connection running that needs to be turned off on the XP.
For example... sometimes I left my msn messenger service on and turned off
the computer... i'd have 3 lights on the modem... i'd have to turn on the
computer and turn off the msn service and then shut down the computer again.
Then I would only have 2 lights instead of 3 showing on the modem... before
adding the router and extra computer... I also noticed it only did it thru
the ethernet connection and not the USB connection to the modem. Modem is
dual connection... router of course is only ethernet connections only. So
hooking it up that way is out...
So where do I start to look for something that should be off but remains
active even when the computers turned off. And can my computer be accessed
because the lines are open? Is it safe to leave it this way? The Modem has a
Power light and ready light that remain on at all times... and the light that
turns off if computer is turned off for either USB or Ethernet cable is
remaining on. The router has a power light, internet light that remain on and
2 lights for the 2 ports which are active when computers are on... but 1
remains on for XP when both computers are off. Understand... I hope so... LOL
I had a modem that went bad and locked up my phone lines for a week... Never
checked the computer because it was turned off and with the phone down I
didn't need to get on it.. I never thought my modem would be active even when
computer was off and cause me so much trouble. That's why I'm concerned, I
have DSL and it's always on, don't need anyone accessing my computer even
when it's off or in my case appears off but not. Thanks...
