- Windows XP Security >> Weird Security Settings Blocking IEHey everyone;
I have been setting desired restrictions on the local
Guests group of a computer in a Workgroup. For some
reason, when a User who is a meber of this group runs
Internet Explorer 6 they cannot run ActiveX, Java, or
Flash. I have made sure they have read access to the
C:\Windows\System32\Macromedia folder and their Internet
Options are allowing ActiveX and Java to run.
What am I missing?
Thanks!

- Windows XP >> a simple questionHi, I have a simple question for whch I have found differing arguments even
on MVP sites. As I have got quite good advice here before, I'm trying here.
'Should one turn off system restore before scanning, or IF malware is found,
after scanning. I know a clean restore point should be made if malware has
been successfully cleaned. But why does some advice say to turn off before
scanning? Thx a lot.

- Windows XP Security >> Making backup files on another computer. So my computer is not working, but I want to backup my documents. I took out
my hard drive and put it in another computer as a secondary drive, but when I
tried to open my documents on this computer, it said access is denied. (I
believe this has to do with my old computer being password protected)

- Windows XP Security >> User Privileges in XP HomeI think I may be fighting the inevitable but here goes!
I need to install some Oracle software on a new laptop
that has XP Home as the OS. The software I need to put
on there requires certain User Privileges to be set to
allow it to operate. This is easily done in XP Pro, NT
etc but I've never tried installing this software on an
XP Home machine before.
I need to know if there is anyway of setting user
privileges in XP Home as I can't find a way anywhere so
far. I am almost certain this has been restricted or is
not available for XP Home but maybe there is a way round
this? FYI the three extra privileges I need to grant to
the Administrator user are 'Act as part of the operating
system' - 'Increase quotas' - 'Replace a process level
token'.
As I said, I am almost certain this can't be done with XP
Home. XP Pro is no problem but I really need to set up
this software on a machine that is running XP Home. Any
help at all will be very gratefully received.
Thanks!

- Windows XP Setup >> Lost HardwareHi
I don't know if this is the right place or not but here goes.
I have a problem in that my CD drive disappears from Explore at the end
of a day if it has not been used often during the day.
The only way to get it back is to restart the Computer.

- Windows XP Security >> Limit user to certain partitionsI have an XP Pro machine that has three partitions. The C drive is the system
drive with Windows and programs. The other 2 partitions are just for data.
There are 2 users on this computer. The first user is the boss at the office
so he has access to both of the "data" partitions. However, the boss would
like the other user to have access to just one of the two "data" partitions.
How can this be done? Group Policy? I know that a Basic User in XP Pro has no
permission to access to any admin's personal folders, but how can I apply the
same security to not folders but a whole partition?

i mean windows can detect the connection of the disk so it would be nice if

>>Kazaa Rule 1: try never to use it, and scan
everything for virus if you do.
If you are running XP make a restore point right before
using Kazaa,, and then once its served its purpose,
restore the computer to before it was installed.
I have always deleted it through my control panel remove
programs function. I do always search for everything
with kazaa in it, and delete those things found.
Rule 2: Know and accept that it comes with a ton of
baggage and spybots, cookies, ads, etc. Suggest you get
an Adaware program,, A cleanup program, a Register
cleaner, and a spybot program all can be had free from
Cnet or Tucows. Really the best idea is to stay away
from those swap programs, Someone has to pay for them,
and its the advertisers.

- Windows XP Hardware >> reformatIt looks like I have to reformat. I'm going to go ahead and put in a new
Seagate 200gb drive. I'm not sure if my Windows disk has sp1 on it or not,
so if I put the new drive in as a slave and format it while I still have
sp2, then take it out and change the jumper to master, take out my current
drive and replace it with the new Seagate will the install disk recognize
all 200gb, or will I be stuck with the 137 gb limit anyway since I'm
"starting from scratch". Whew! Thanks for any help! (hopefully the disk
has sp1!)

- Windows XP Security >> Javascript in Content AdvisorHi,
I'm triyng to use content advisor to restrict the sites allowed for some
users.
The problem that I have is that even if a site is allowed in the content
adviser allowed sites it is blocking the javascripts.
I've found that if I know the javascript function name I can add it in the
allowed sites (it works). But I don't want to add all functions one-by-one (I
don't even know their names).
What I need is a way to allow all javascript functions running in one
allowed site (I've already add this site to the trusted sites and allowed
everything in here).
Can someone please help me with this ?

Miguel Campos

- Windows XP Setup >> Disk Clean UpPrior to running Disk Cleanup, I empty my recycle bin, go to Local Settings
and clear out the History/ Temp / and Temporary Internet Files folders.
When I then run Disk Cleanup, it still listed files (over 400,000 kbs) under
'Temp Internet Files.' Is this a different cache than the one under Local
Settings? If so, where is it-- I would like to manually empty all traces...

- Windows XP Security >> Repost of serious problemIf I try to open a file from within Windows Explorer by
double clicking on it the file fails to open and the error
message says that the file does not exist or the path may
have changed.
Reading the error message a little more carefully it is
breaking the file name at every space so trying to open a
file called "Year End Sales.xls" would give errors for no
file called year.xls then one saying no file called
end.xls then one saying no...sales.xls.
If you delete the spaces then it opens just fine
Any thought as this is a real pain!
Thanks in advance

- Windows XP >> Strange user logon messageWhen I boot to the User logon window there is a message
next to my logon icon "20 unread messages".
This has not ever happened before (over 2 years). There
are no unread messages. I have deleted all of Deleted

Windows XP is fully updated, my anti-virus likewise, my

are fully updated.
I am absolutely unable to determine what the problem is
or the cause.
Ideas/suggestions please. I may need to access the
registry to correct, any clues?
