- Windows XP Network >> VPN seems to use Internet DNS before using VPN DNS serversWe have a split-brain DNS setup for one of our servers. This works fine as far as Internet clients getting a DNS resolution that is different than our internal clients.
We also have users who establish a VPN connection to our network. After a VPN connection is established, the VPN client uses the DNS servers from the Internet connection instead of the DNS servers from the VPN connection. Actually, it looks like the VPN client first queries the Internet DNS servers, then if that fails, it queries the VPN DNS servers.
How can I force a VPN connection to first use the DNS servers that are associated with the VPN connection instead of the DNS servers that are associated with the Internet connection?

- Windows XP >> question on adding program from flash driveI recently took an upgraded version of java off of someone elses computer. I
saved it to my flash drive and tried to install it on my computer. I tried
doing it with add new programs in control panel but it says i need to click
on the windows update button to add files from a drive or other stuff. I
fully upgraded and it says the same thing. Is it not possible to do that? Is
it possible to load any program from my flash drive like flash or frontpage?
Please tell me how to do this, I would really appreciate it.

- Windows XP Support >> need some advanced registry recovery tips...Leave it to windows' automatic disk checking schemes to screw everything
up...
I just performed a routine restart, since it had been a few weeks, and
certain things were starting to become sluggish. Overall though, there was
really nothing wrong with the overall operation of my system.
As XP booted (i have XP pro SP1 btw), it went into the scandisk routine for
C: and I wasn't paying enough attention to stop it in time. It was
relatively uneventful, removing only one bad file and recovering one orphan
(allegedly). Thereafter XP booted again normally until I went to log in;
here I recieved a message claiming (and i need to paraphrase a bit), "your
registry has been recovered from a saved version". uh-oh.
It then did something i haven't seen before (at least, not exactly). The
login screen eventually disappeared to reveal my usual desktop, but stopped
there. It loaded no icons, no taskbar or systray. the HD grinding stopped
soon enough, and it just sat there. So far I've timed this behavior at 5
minutes. I was able to bring up task manager, which reported nothing
out-of-the-usual (other than very few programs running), except no
Explorer.exe -- I couldn't even launch it manually. I restarted with "last
good configuration" (but without high hopes), same result. The weirdest
part -- It even behaves this way now as i bring it up in safe mode. It's
currently just sitting there. I can bring up a command window fine, and if
i do "run" through task manager I can browse the whole computer, but i can't
"open" a folder.
My #1 theory at this point is that the "registry recovery" buggered it --
and I haven't had to deal with this kinda thing manually for a while.
Usually with clients, where all they have of value is some saved e-mail that
i can back up easily, i just wipe the HD and/or reinstall XP, but in my case
I'd prefer to save that for a last-ditch-scenario. Can someone step me
through doing some advanced registry recovery? I know what I'm doing, but
right now I just forget how to do it or where to look for
resources/instructions.
Thanks in advance for any help.

- Windows XP Setup >> creat user from command promptHi,
I recently had a virus that errased my desktop icons :-(
I heard that if I create a new user, this new user will have a new desktop
(fully functional) and I won't re-install WinXp.
There's no Start button at the bottom of the screen and I can't create a new
user the old fashioned way (control panel). BUT I have access to the command
prompt (run), but I need to know if I can enter the program name that will
allow me to create a new user account ?
Thanks !!

- Windows XP Setup >> Restore DVDI am about to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything YET AGAIN.
Seems like I do it at least once a year.
Is it possible to create a Restore DVD, similar to the CD's that come with
most new computers, that has xp and my applications and service packs
preinstalled?
I'm tired of spending nearly a day just reinstalling my software.

Especially in vidogames, they are prettymuck unplayable
by my standards. I have a radeon 9000. Everything was
running nice and smooth. But now everything sucks! Why,
What happened, how can I get my comp running normally????
I ran avg antivirus. It found like fifty infected
files and healed them. No change in performance. One
file cannot be fixed: "system32\msconfig35.exe."
Can I grab that file from another computer and replace
it? I know it's an important one. It says the other
files are healed.
Also can't open task manager. Have done proceedures
reccomended to other people for this; no change.
Also when I shut down, comp says trying to shut down
Wnd RNAmin. WHAT IS THAT?????
ANYONE, HELP !!!

Rob,
It has nothing to do with the user account.
Have you correctly configured the group policy settings to tell the machines
to us your local SUS server and what policy as regards timing to use.

- Windows XP Support >> =?Utf-8?Q?Can=E2=80=99t_I_delete_.tmp_files_to_fre?=I have a .tmp file in C:\Windows after upgrading to XP that is >250MB, it
lets me delete it to Recycle Bin without apparent problems; I should be able
to delete this from the Recycle Bin right?
I had a CHKDSK loop problem that was resolved today by using F8->Disable
Automatic Restart on System Failure & renamed a problem .sys file to .old.
I have a couple other sizeable .tmp files in the same directory that ask me
if I really want to delete them as they are read only? They cool to delete?
-> Are any .tmp files that XP allows me to delete into Recycle Bin, safe to
delete permanently from Recycle Bin/system? -Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> "Find" works sporadicallyI use XP.
When I am on any type of page, be it a web page, an email page, a Word page,
a page I'm workin on in Front Page Express -- you name it -- when I use the
Ctrl+F (Find) key or if I go to the pull-down menus to click Find, it is
totally unreliable.
Sometimes when I KNOW that a word is there and it is not showing up, I will
do it "UP" and "DOWN" 2-3 times, and then it might work; but then again it
might NOT. Sometimes if I get out of the page and come back to it, it will
work, but I can never depend on it.
Any suggestions as what to do? Thanks.
