- Windows XP Hardware >> audio problemsHad to re-install WinXP (not upgrade) and have lost my audio somewhere along the line
I went to play Winamp and this is the msg i get
"Erro
A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system
This happens on any wav. midi. etc. files
I've gone into my device manager and really not sure which audio driver I'm after
I have "Creative AudioPCI(ES1371,ES1373)(WDM)" which seems to look like is working properly....what it tells me in the properties anyways.(don't think this is what i want anyways...but ,like i said...not sure
And i also have" Legacy Audio drivers".....in which case I have 2 of the
One of them has information on the drivers in the drivers tab....the other doesn't have anything in the drivers tab whatsoever
Both, in the general tab, gives me no options in the "device usage:"
I'm thinking one of these i don't need, but not sure . Neither gives me the option to disable or delete
I have no volume control in my taskbar. When i boot up... i do get the windows start up tune
I've tried to find out what i can do, but the only thing i could actually find was something about re-installing windows and that the registry didn't change( or something like that) and that plug n play wouldn't go looking for my audio devices again. (make sense? this came from a windows 98 user
I've gone to a drivers website and really have no clue as to what I should be downloading etc
would be greatly appreciated if someone could point me in the right direction
Thanx

- Windows XP Support >> Add/remove programs and rundll32.exeHi
When I try to uninstall programs via add/remove programs my system hangs
indefinately.
If I open add/remove programs the list populates ok, I can choose remove,
then it hangs. In task manager a rundll32.exe process is taking 100% cpu
usage. I also get the same scenario if I try to use the program uninstaller
tool in CCleaner.
I've carried out a full scan with Spybot, AVG Anti-spyware, and NOD32 AV
(all fully updated to the latest definitions) and also run sfc /scannow.
There are no events or error messages, system just doesn't respond until the
offending rundll32.exe process is halted.
Hope this makes sense, Thx in advance

- Windows XP Support >> Corrupted Windows XP Home System FileI have an issue where I have not been able to do a full McAfee Virus Scan on
my computer because the VS Scan locks up at one partcular Windows System
File. I am beginning to think that it may be corrupted? My options are:
1. Delete the file and hope Windows XP continues to work or
2. Have someone send me this file and copy it over the corrupted file.
The specific file in Windows XP Home is:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB\MSMDINT.DLL
Please provide me with some assistance. Thank you.

- Windows XP Update >> Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2Hi. Here is my scenario. I had to reformat my hard drive. I reinstalled XP
Home, and because of the fact that I am on dial up, my friend provided me
with the SP 2 on disk. I ran the install program, and everything worked fine.
I then logged onto windows update to download all of the patches. (count 54).
I received no errors about downloads and installs. They said they all
installed correctly, as far as I remember, and I restarted my computer.
However, I have 54 of those KB****.log files in my windows directory, and
they all have errors in it such as stating that the update.ver file is not
correct, and that files such as sp4.cab does not exist.
In addition, when I go into my add/remove programs, the only program that is
listed is the windows 1.3 installer, and the windows service pack 2. Should
the additional subsequent patches be listed as well? I know that when I go to
the windowsupdate site, it says that I don't need to install anything new.
Do any of you think that the problem was that it was a fresh install, that
didn't even have SP1 on it yet, or was it because I installed from a disk? Do
I actually have these updates and the log files aren't anything to worry
about?
I have posted below an example of one of the 54 KB******.log files. I also
have the windowsupdate.log file, but it is HUGE, so I'm not sure what to post
regarding that. Please let me know if anyone needs to see anything from it.
I've looked it over, and haven't found anything, to my knowledge, that seems
ominous. Anyone have any suggestions?
Sorry this log is so long, I'm not sure what, if anything, should have been
left out.
I will be posting the log in a nested reply to this post.

- Windows XP Setup >> Install of XP Home Doesn't Recognize MouseHello, My sister gave me her computer that had come with XP Home, but she had
put XP Pro on. She wanted to keep the XP Pro license for her new computer,
so I installed the XP Home over the XP Pro, reformatting the hard drive in
the process.
It got to the screen asking me if I was connected to the Internet to
register the software when I noticed the USB mouse was not responding. I
tried several different USB ports to no success, and I was unable to click
the no radio button, so I hit the reset button. I hope that wasn't a
mistake. It rebooted and came to the XP desktop, but there are no icons on
the desktop besides a recycle bin and the mouse still does not work. The
system tray has the message asking me if I want to take a tour of XP.
How do I get the USB mouse to work? It is a functioning mouse - I plugged
it into this computer and it works fine.
HELP!

Check the UMAX web-site, I think you will find that it is incompatible with
XP. I'm pretty sure it is the same model scanner I had to scrap when I went
to XP.

I went to the site and found, there is now software available for your

You will have to order it on CD. It was not available back when I went to

Windows XP Hardware >> UMAX Astra 1220P
I did a bunch of things but basically this is what I did.
I uninstalled the Vistascan software and rebooted. Then I
reinstalled the software and went into device manager. It
said "unknown device" under "Imaging devices" so I tried to
update driver using the patch that UMAX gave me. It failed
with a "The class installer has denied the request to
install or upgrade this device". So I picked the Astra
1220S instead. And that worked but of course it couldn't
find the device. Then I updated it to the Astra 1220P.
That worked although I got a "This device cannot start
(code 10)" error. So I tested the scanner and it works fine.
The device manager has a yellow "!" over the device and it
does not list under "Cameras & Scanners" in Control Panel.
But at least its working. Any advise on where to go from
here?

Windows XP Hardware >> UMAX Astra 1220P
I have an Astra 1220S (scsi connection) which also seemingly didn't have an XP version of the VistaScan software available for it.
I found out on another forum that you can use the Umax "Magic Scan v4.3" with it, which is the software they supply with their high-end scanners - it works perfectly under XP, and offers much better features than VistScan. I can't remember which Umax site I managed to download this from, but the UK site didn't seem to want to let me.

- Windows XP Security >> can't delete registry entriesI'm trying to clean up after a virus infection on an XP Pro SP2 machine. I
have a list of all the registry entries added by the virus, and want to
manually delete them. I can find them easily enough, but when I try to
delete them I get an 'unable to delete all occurrences' message (or words
very similar!).
I'm not very experienced in editing the registry - I usually use a util to
keep it tuned - and I know how dangerous it can be. But although I've
removed the virus exe from the machine, and prevented firewall_anti from
loading or running, I still have all these registry entries that I'd like to
get rid of. What's the right way to do it please? I'm right-clicking the
reg entry concerned and choosing delete. Edit/Delete gives me the same
message. As I say, I have what seems like an accurate list of the reg
entries made by the virus (from Sophos).
Any pointers greatly appreciated, thanks

- Windows XP Network >> XP ICS problem opening most pages in internet explorerI have a small network of 3 computers all running XP(2 pro, one home). We
connect using ADSL which does not use PPoE. We just recently got issued a
public IP from our ISP, so I changed our network configuration to use one of
our windows XP Pro computers (all are Dell Demensions) to work as an internet
connection sharing host. The basic setup is DSL modem --> Host Computer -->
Switch --> Other computers. On the host computer, the internet connection
works perfectly -- and it also works fine on the computer running XP Home.
However, on the other XP pro computer everything should be working fine. I'm
networked on the lan, have all access to shared files and printers, obviously
recieve an IP -- can ping to any server on the internet through the command
prompt -- Outlook works fine for email access. However Internet Explorer
will not open any but a small handful of pages. Google opens, as does the
MSN home page. However no other sites that I have tried open -- they simply
stall out on the web site found, waiting for reply message on the status bar
until after a few minutes brings up 'the page can not be displayed.' I've
tried manually setting the lan card speed/duplex mode, looked for new
drivers, and in desperation reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled
windows from scratch (we've had the computer for less than 3 weeks, so it
wasn't as drastic as it could be), yet the problem remains. I tried dell
tech support, but because of the 'advanced technical' nature of the problem
it does not fall under the warranty coverage and they wanted to charge me
$150 dollars for one-time telephone support. Please if anyone has any other
possible ideas, let me know as i've pretty well exhausted my knowledge -- I
have a great deal of computer background, but networking is one of my weakest
areas. Sorry for the eye-strain, I just wanted to be comprehensive. THANKS!!
