- Windows XP Support >> Windows FirewallI recently updated the Windows Svc Pk2 and much to my dismay the Firewall has
turned itself back on. I am currently using Norton and prefer to us Norton,
but cannot figure out how to turn the Windows Firewall off. No matter what I
do it still shows that it is on. Is anyone else out there experiencing this
problem and if so how do you permanently disable the blasted thing?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Support >> Deletions in WinXP Pro II6:02 PM 6/20/2005
6/20/2005
How would I DELETE in Windows XP Pro 2? By this I mean there are
certain file types (extensions) that SOME of them do not delete. For
example, a WAV file with that extension does not delete when I:
1. press the delete key;
2. press the delete and the shift keys;
3. do the same as 1. and 2. above clicking on "delete" in the
list I get from right-clicking.
Thank you,

- Windows XP >> What is this??Running XP SP2
I checked my start-up memo and found %systemroot%memory.dmp
I looked it up in Google and the consensus is to disable it in startup.
However, when I take out the checkmark and reboot, the checkmark is right
back.
Computer runs fine. How do I get rid of this start-up item?

- Windows XP Update >> USB Data CableI bought a USB Data cable to connet to my cell phone and download pictures. I

- Windows XP >> Why do critical updates screw up my computer so often? One of the reasons I am so leary to install microsoft critical updates
is because of the frequent experience of not having a working machine
when it reboots.
Just today I downloaded probably a month's worth of updates to my
otherwise up-to-date XP SP2 machine. The machine installs, reboots and
I'm greeted with 640x480x16 color VGA display. Somehow the critical
updates managed to screw with my video drivers. What?!! I used System
Restore and managed to recover one of my two screens back to hi-res
VGA. But I still have no idea what happened to my other screen.
This is not the first time i've encountered problems like this. I
repeatedly run into problems with the update patches.
I used to own a web server and had serious issues as well. sometimes
the server just wouldn't reboot and i'd have to rollback the latest
updates to recover my system.
Overall I've had much less damage done to my systems from malicious
viruses than i have from these critical updates.
Done ranting.

Windows XP Hardware >> Sound issues (getting static when I play music)
For the last couple of weeks I've had problems playing music on my PC. As a
matter of fact this problem coincides with my udpated to XP Service Pack 2.
Every music file I now play has an awful static noise to it, you can still
hear the music, but there's a lot of static with it as well. I didn't have
this problem before. I have checked all my cords on my speakers and on my
sound card (which is an Aureal Vortex 8810 Audio WDM) and they are all in
securely. I have tried adjusting the volume on both my speakers and in
Windows and it doesn't help me, hence the reason I'm here. Anyone have any
clue as to what the problem could be?

There are some device drivers that just don't get along with SP2. The
solutions are typically as follows.
1. Hardware manufacturer releases compatible driver.
or
2. Hardware is replaced with something that has compatible drivers.
or
3. User removes SP2 until 1 or 2 above is accomplished.
or
4. User tolerates problem.

Aureal went bankrupt before WinXP was released, therefore no drivers
were written for XP. Then Creative bought Aureal and that was the end
of it.
Your only option is a new sound card. A cheap Creative card will work.

- Windows XP Hardware >> DDR RAM UpgradeI am wanting to add more RAM to my computer and so need to determine what
model of computer I have?
The handbook which came with the computer does not actually say, as it is
one handbook across several models.
The make is Medion if that helps and it is an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU
2.80GHz.
Thanks - John.

- Windows XP >> Opening files Performance IssueI have a network of 20 computers. We are using Office 2003 sp2 or sp3.
About 5 of them are experiencing issues when opening files (word, excel,
power point,
TXT, PDF, ETC). When a user opens a file though My Documents it doesn't
matter
if it's over the network or local. It can take 2-3 minutes for the file to
load and show.
If the user opens Word, Excel, Notepad, or Adobe though a shortcut (without
a file)
and then goes to file -> open & chooses a file it will open regularly.
The computers are identical to the ones w/o issue. They are 3.2gHz 1gb ram.
WinXP SP2,
The Server is Win03 SP1.
Any advice?

- Windows XP >> email questionUsing OE and XP.
There is a particular email address I try to send to which doesn't get my
email. Nor does it bounce. Just seems to go off into some cyber void.
I thought possibly the person at the receiving end inadvertently filtered
me. I've only been filtered out by one person that I know of. The way I
knew that is because I got a bounce back telling me "so and so no longer
chooses to receive mail from you", through the person's mail server.
Do they all do it that way? If so, I can eliminate that as one reason my
mail isn't getting through to the concerned email address.
If that isn't the reason, give me some thoughts as to what else it could be
(my friend is getting email from others OK; just not from me. I'm sending
to all others OK; just not to that one).

- Windows XP >> A disk read error occurred; Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restartEver since the last time I restarted my Windows XP PC, I get the
following error:
A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
This has happened before, and my solution was to backup all the data,
reformat the drive, and then put all the data back again. This is
very time-consuming, and a pain in the ___! The drive appears OK when
connected as a slave, and I even ran Norton Disk Doctor on it and no
errors are found.
I'd like to find out #1, why this problem has happened and seems to re-
occur from time to time, and #2, if there is a better way of fixing it
short of keeping a spare drive on hand to do a data-transfer,
reformat, date-transfer-back, which is a major hassle and takes a long
time to do. Even after that, some applications need to be
reinstalled, because something about this procedure makes them lose
their registered status.

- Windows XP >> framedyn.dll missingI am trying re-install framedyn.dll from Windows XP and
the instructions are to locate it on the Windows disk if
it is not in %systemroot%\system32\dllcache. I cannot
find it on the recovery disks. Where is it?
Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 Distiller Printer will not install in
Windows XP without the framedyn.dll file. (I bought AA
5.0.5 last May, but put it aside when it would not
operate. Now I need it, and I'm too annoyed at Adobe to
buy v.6 when v.5.0.5 doesn't work.)

- Windows XP Setup >> offline files behaviourSince last nights backup one of our users reconnected her laptop to the
network, presumably updating the server with those files she had changed
while at home. Since then I have had to restore our data drive from backup,
which appears to have replaced the files in her offline cache with the older
versions.
I understood the offline files function to use the modified date to
determine which version of the file was most recent, and therefore which copy
to change. Why would the restored file on the server, with an older date
stamp, replace the newer version on the laptop?

- Windows XP >> Workstation registry search and replace for keyword?Does anyone know how I can do a complete workstation registry search and
replace based on a keyword.
We migrated to a new file and print server and in every workstation registry
is the old file server name all over the place.
I ideally would like to just replace the old server name "w2afpsys000" with
the new name "w3sfp1" in the registry.
Thanks

- Windows XP >> Taskbar/desktop icons disappear when explorer usedI've searched high and low for an answer, and can't seem to come up
with one... when I log on to my computer, and try to open explorer, the
taskbar and all desktop icons disappear for roughly 3 seconds, then
reappear. I am unable to open my computer/documents/music/pictures etc.
Essentially, there seems to be something stopping me from being able to
view the files on my computer. I have run Norton/Ad-Aware/Spybot
several times, and have been clean, except for one file in a recycle
bin which is left over from a former install of windows... meaning I
cannot delete it until I can get into explorer. Ha.
Has anyone ever experienced this, or know of any way to fix it? I have
tried searching, but have come up empty. Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP Setup >> Installing xp on an existing dual boot systemHi,
I need to install xp professional on my machine, it's a
dual boot (windows 2000 and windows me). The original os
I had was windows me (c drive), I then installed w2k (f
drive), I used partition magic 6.0 to partition my disc.
I now would like to install xp instead of ME. Do I need
to do anything or are there any special things that I
need to do before installing xp? or is all I need to do
is start installation and when it asks me which drive I
then choose drive c.
Thank you
