- Windows XP >> XP Disk Cleanup with external hard drivesI have a new Maxtor5000LE external hard drive. XP Disk
Cleanup will not work on this drive. Chk Disk and
Defragment do work ok though. My computer is also new (HP
Pavillion ZD7020US)-Pentium4-2.8 and 80Gig drive. The
Maxtor does work perfectly. My whole system works great
except fot this. I'm Stumped?I know its not a system
resources problem. It still wouldn't work in safe mode and
also with everything else disconnected.

- Windows XP >> usb phone wont loadI have a usb robotics 9601 usb phone that I was trying to use on skype, but
when I plug it in it makes the little noise and acknowledges it is plugged
in but says the drivers are not loaded and wants to search for a driver, I
have contacted us robotics and they say there is no driver to install, that
windows should install it automatically. I tried it on a machine at a local
computer shop, and it istalled just fine. Just something funny going on with
my machine. which by the way is running xp pro sp2. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Was this a virus? Can I reinstall XP from a flashdisk? (CD driveI didn't at first assume this problem was started by a virus but am
at
least half sure it was now. My CD drive broke down and keyboard went
haywire. First the keyboard wouldn't react to h, 4, or 6 being
pressed, then whatever I typed it would keep acting as if I was
pressing ther Home key too. I tried all that enable DMA stuff with
the CD drive, which for a while was playing CDs but not DVDs, then
briefly played some DVDs before croaking altogether. It won't read a
CD-rom so I can't use my recovery disk. I laboriously copied that
onto a flash disk with my dad's Vista computer and have today tried
to
get things going that way. I've looked at the BIOs, which someone nw
tells me can have become messed up by a possible virus (should I be
able to access the CD/DVD drive settings using the BIOS? I can't).
I
have no money to get a professional to do this, and the manufacturers
themselves, Fujitsu-Siemens, want about 5 times as much money as any
local repairer. There's nowhere I can borrow and external CD drive
to
use the recovery disk, no floppy on the machine, and somehow I can't
format the C drive to get rid of the corrupted Windows, maybe that
was
one of the brave and intelligent things the virus program-writer
brought about. I have been able to get out these jams with Win 95
and
98 machines (reinstalling, I mean; they had not been in any situation
where a virus could have come into it). The machine takes an odd and
impossible to find CD drive, my local repairer drew a blank with his
various suppliers.
I had considered that the problems were entirely mechanical until one
System Restore or another changed the situation temporarily (with
both
the keyboard and CD problems) - until, perhaps, the virus kicked in
again.
I have scarcely been near any risky sites, and certainly not to
download anything. I have had no virus protection, just the XP
firewalls, which may seem crazy to some, but it had seemed i'd been
safe for years, and have seldome taken risks, and thought the XP
Firewall should be enough.
I'm in an i-cafe now, and had left the flash disk's Windows recovery
files to do a repair, but I'm not hopeful. An attempt to make a
clean
install brought me merely to a blue screen error message.
The long and the short is, how can I get this machine into an out of
the box state? It's spec is still pretty good, and it's only 3 years
old. Is it cabbaged?
Thanks for all help.

- Windows XP >> How Does One Show ".$#!" Extension For "Cryptext" Under Windows XPHello. I use Windows XP Pro, and have been using "Cryptext v3.4", by
Nick Payne, for file encryption.
If anyone is interested, this shell extension was formerly available
at http://www.pcug.org.au/~njpayne, but this URL is no longer valid
-- he seems to have moved. It is still available at various other
sites, however, including the following:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,7941,00.asp
http://www.fusionsource.com/downloads/encrypt.html
http://www.freewarebeast.com/freeware/download-cryptext-14477.php
...among a few others.
I am very satisfied with it, but I have one niggling problem.
My QUESTION is, does ANYONE here know of any way, under Windows XP Pro,
to render the ".$#!" extension visible under Windows Explorer?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated: Thank you.

- Windows XP Setup >> How best automate updates and backups?I'm trying to help a group of mainly non-technical people get their PCs
updated and connected to the internet. At the moment it's voluntary but I
might be paid for doing it in future.
I'm a professional electrical engineer and C/C++ programmer (although not
specifically a Windows programmer), so the technical side is not a problem.
I can wire a phone extension and install a modem, sign them up with an ISP,
install a virus checker and firewall etc, even upgrade a motherboard if
necessary.
The problem is ongoing maintenance, especially with the added risks
associated with an internet connection. I can set up Windows Update to
install critical updates, the virus checker to check for new virus
definitions, and schedule backups, but as soon as a window pops up asking
"do you want to continue?" they take fright and it doesn't happen.
Two possible solutions occur to me:
1. For the minority that are on broadband or untimed dialup connections,
initiate updates and backups remotely using Netmeeting's "remote desktop
sharing" or similar.
2. For the rest, maybe mail a CD to them periodically. It would run an
installation script that installs the latest updates and maybe backs up
their files to the same CD, which they mail back. It would have to be
_completely_ unattended once started, and reversible in case of problems.
Does anyone know of programs that can do the above? It must be a common
problem, surely.
Or a more appropriate place to ask?
It doesn't have to be a perfect solution - anything is better than the
current situation. Restricting it to machines running 32-bit Windows would
be OK for now.

- Windows XP >> MSN Messenger cuts out Strange!Hi I posted this on a MSN Messenger group but never had a satisfactory
reply.
I chat with a friend most nights on MSN messenger v7.5. We both have Windows
XP SP2 with the latest updates. I use Blueyonder broadband and my friend
uses UClub/Plusnet ISDN.
When we are chatting using Voice conversation at exactly 01:00 we lose the
connection and I get a pop up that he has ended the conversation and he is
offline. His messenger icon has a red cross on it and on clicking the icon
he gets a message that he is not connected. He then clicks connect and he is
connected then starts an audio conversation and every thing is OK. Now the
strange bit. If I connect remotely with his computer and take charge of it
before 01:00, when he loses the connection I can click on his MSN icon and
sign in to messenger and start a voice conversation with myself from his
computer. All without him doing a thing.
So it would appear that he is not losing his internet connection as I have
control of his computer but something is cancelling his voice conversation
at exactly 01:00. Has anyone any ideas what could cause this? As I said he
is not losing his internet connection nor remote access only the voice
conversation.
Totally baffled Ron

- Windows XP Setup >> F6 doesn't see the USB drive -no floppyHello,
I've installed XP on a quite a few computers but never learned the trick to
get around F6 on setup to install drivers for the S-ATA controller if the

case but it would be great if I could specify my usb thumb drive. Some
systems do not have drivers for certain S-ATA controllers such as various
Promise models.
I know I have that issue on my own system - MSI FIS2R with a SATA 378
controller - ulsata.sys. I know I've tried various options - so far
haven't figured out the right one.

- Windows XP >> XP Home/cable modem loses connectivityHi,
XP Home Edition, Cable modem, 1.8 ghz processor, 512 RAM,
Symantec Internet Security Suite (Norton's AntiVirus).
I got my cable modem configured, and everything worked OK
for months. While building a second PC, I took the NIC
out of the first PC temporarily. When I reinstalled it
in the first PC, it lost all connectivity to the
Internet. I worked with Adelphia on it - the only fix
was to reinstall XP - and all my other applications.
Now, I've done it again. :^( Whenever I start XP, it
says my network cable is unplugged. It isn't, and I do
have a Link light on the modem. The receive light
flashes, and the IP address/DNS, etc. are correct. I
cannot ping any domain names.
Is there a registry hack or something I can do to prevent
having to reinstall everything ?
Thanks,
Lannie
