- Windows XP >> Screensaver on multiple PC'sI've been asked to design a screensaver that will run at the same time on
multiple networked PC's (like a BestBuy TV showroom). Can a screensaver be
designed to start at the top of the minute - based on the PC's clock? This
way I could have individual screensavers loaded in each PC - this way content
could flow from one screen to another. Or is there another way to go about
this?
Thanks for any and all help.

- Windows XP Network >> reconnect at startupI have an application that requires a drive on the computer be mapped to a
drive letter on the same computer. I go through the map drill, checking the
"Remap on logon" box, but the mapping does not survive a restart.
I have made up a batch file with the command line
NET USE X: \\ALAN-DESKTOP\ACSNET /PERSISTENT:YES
which does the job when run from a command prompt but I haven't been able to
find a spot to call it from on startup or restart. Any suggestions?

- Windows XP >> Boot virus & root kit?Hello,
I contacted you last week concerning a boot virus and you directed me to"
drive scrubber"(nice product)
problem is that even with a 7 hr complete wipe, I still have the virus.I
have unpluged my machine and removed the battery and all memory overnight
and cleared the cmos
when i reinstall windows xp (any version)on this HDD the same thing happens
.......For about five minuites after connecting to the net everything is
fine .. then all of a sudden i cannot connect (even though my connection is
showing active) i tried to scan with various online scanners but it wont let
me download them giving me various error messages ..I have even tried
loading full virus protection from a cd (norton internet security 2006)but
it stopped the live update process.... same with trend micro, this virus is
STEALTH and after about 20 min the pc basically locks up. and cpu is
overworking . also you cannot set the drive as slave and scan because the
virus will infect the master drive (already happened )I took my pc to
another repair technician and he didn't want to hook it up to his.( He has
no idea either) I did some research and i believe i have a root kit virus ..
there is a program on the net called "ICESWORD" that detects rootkit virus
but i do not know how to use the program and it has no instructions with it
.Its found on the sysinternals site.If anyone has any info on this type of
virus and how to remove it please contact me in this form .. i have 2 HDD
down and a 6 gig travel drive that i cannot use
after a week im running out of ideas nothing shows up in Hyjack this .
cannot download virus software in safe mode with networking & scanners will
not work in safemode either
Please help

- Windows XP >> Under Reporting Hard Drive SizeI have a two hard drive system. One is a 12.7 Gigabyte capacity, and the
other one is and 80 gigabyte capacity. When I had Windows 98 SE, the software
put a dynamic drive overlay in the boot program. I upgraded to XP Home and
stayed with the FAT 32 file system. Now the computer is reporting the
capacity of the 80 gigabyte hard drive as 31.4 gigabyte. I have tried every
suggestion that I could find, to no avail. The 80 gigabyte hard drive is the
slave in the system, because I want to primarily use it for storage. Help! I
do not want to change the file system and have to reinstall the XP Home OS.

I keep getting a 'Cannot Open' KERNAL Driver asLm75.sys
When I ok this I get 'Cannot Load' AsiHlo.dll When I ok

- Windows XP Network >> Mixed OS network printing problemsHi all
I've set up a small network at home with 2 XP laptops and one Win98SE tower.
I have a printer plugged into the 98 machine (because I want to keep the
others portable and also it has a parallel port) but I can't print to it
from the XP machines. I can see the printer in the 'network places' but get
a 'cannot communicate with the printer' error when trying to print. I've
got XP drivers for the printer on the XP machines and Win98 drivers on the
98 machine. My network runs through a combined adls/router/gateway box. I
assume that the mixed OS thing is causing me the problem. This is the only
problem with the network, everything else, eg file sharing, works fine.
Anyone have any ideas how I can sort this out without buying a copy of XP
for the tower?
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> Failed Installation Win32 MessageI am running Windows XP SP2. I've downloaded Java & the JRE Runtime

Games won't work without Java applets so I don't know what to try next. I've
gone to Internet Tools, Advanced, and under my HTTP 1.1 heading, there is no

- Windows XP Network >> Connecting two wireless networks?I'm pretty new to networking, and want to keep my question
simple. I have Verizon wireless, with XP-home computer and
Router upstairs, and XP-home computer and laser printer
downstairs. Wireless internet connections work fine.
Trying to connect printer to downstairs computer wirelessly.
Have connected printer and downstairs computer using Netgear
WGE111 Wireless Game Adapter ($29.99 at Frys), and printer
works fine. Now, the question. Is there any way to have
both my Verizon wireless network and the Netgear wireless
network (computer to printer only) to work together (e.g.,
connect one to the other)?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Support >> Hard drive power managementHi, I have a question about power management settings for desktops. I
understand all of the options except "shut off HDs". How can a HD truly be
off if there is any background processes going on? That is, if my computer
is doing periodic backups, communications with a company firewall, etc... how
does it ever shut down? When I test it out, and attempt to send things to
that computer across a network, it seems as if it's still on. It certainly
sounds on from just listening to the machine, and it doesn't appear to be
spinning down and then back up again like from standby. The problem is that
I need to maintain a 24/7 connection to the internet to receive packages and
patches, so I can't use standby.
Could anyone give me some more information on the "shut off HD" option in
the Power Management settings, and how to test if the HDs are truly shutting
down?

- Windows XP Network >> Multiple Machines & ProfilesAfter switching everyone from an Nt4 server to 2003 server and using the
domain migration tool, 2 out of the 17 computers in our office (all running
XP pro) have developed a problem with user profiles.
If a user logs out, then tries to log back in they get an error message
about the profile being missing, and having to use a temporary profile. If
the user reboots there isn't a problem.
The events from the event log are below. Does anyone know what the problem
may be? I've tried using msconfig to limit what starts up, but that doesn't
work.
---------------------
Event ID: 1508
Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by
insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process. for C:\Documents and Settings\rcl\ntuser.dat
---------------------
Event ID: 1502
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this
error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process.
---------------------
Event ID: 1515
Windows has backed up this user's profile. Windows will automatically try to
use the backed up profile the next time this user logs on.
---------------------
Event ID: 1511
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary
profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> GUI features disappear and programs won't launchI've been having a problem with Windows XP for the past
few months in which programs will stop opening and
certain GUI features will start disappearing. It's as if
my system is completely out of memory or system resources
(even though I have 512mb of RAM and the task manager
will show that there is still plenty of memory to spare).
This problem usually occurs when my computer has been on
for a while, or when I have several windows open (but by
no means an excessive amount). Here are the symptoms that
I've noticed:
- Internet Explorer icons will disappear, or the toolbar
layout will change itself to a more minimal display.
- Programs will refuse to launch. They will just issue
a "Windows error" sound when I click their icon, and will
give no other notification.
- Sometimes the task-list that usually pops up on a right-
click will simply not show up.
- Sometimes even the task manager will refuse to launch
on a Ctrl+Alt+Del.
It's as if my computer is at it's absolute breaking point
in terms of system resources, and simply cannot afford to
create one more process. And yet I do not have a
tremendous amount of processes running, and there is
still plenty of unused physical and virtual memory! I've
run memory diagnostic utilities such as MemTest86 and
Windows Memory Diagnostic, but they don't find any errors
in my RAM. So now I think is more a Windows XP issue. Any
ideas what the deal is?

- Windows XP Hardware >> CD and CD-RW suddenly can't read discs. Both my optical drives have stopped reading CDs. In My Computer the CD-RW
drive is blank and the CD drive gives a message saying,"Windows cannot read
from this disc ..." Both drives recognize a CD (music, data) if it is in the
drive when the computer boots. However, if you open and close the drive it
can no longer see the disc. With a music CD I can get it to play using
Windows Media Player even though My Computer shows nothing there. Device
Manager shows everything is fine. I have tried disabling AVG Antivirus. These
drives have worked for over 2 years until now.
