- Windows XP Support >> DOS outside of WindowsI have a Dell laptop with WIN XP with Svc Pk 2. My problem is the name
under the Documents and settings folder was pre-set when I got the machine
(I received it from a friend). Rhe folder is named JOSEPH. When I tried to
change that name, Windows said it was a system folder and may not be
changed. I really want to change that folder name. Do i have to find a way
out to DOS in order to do it?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Limit RAMHello
I just upgraded to XP from W98se. I have 512 meg of RAM
and I would like to be able to temporarily limit my
physical memory to 366 meg.
I used to do this in W98se with the line:
MaxPhysPage=16DFF
in the [386Enh]" section of the SYSTEM.INI file.
This doesn't give the same result in XP.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> worm blasterHi, My home computer shutdown because of the virus. I
turned on the ICF in my computer. I then downloaded the
patch for WindowsXP. Thought I was safe. Next day the
worm was detected by my Norton Antivirus but no fix
available. Do you have a fix yet for this awful virus?
There should be huge consequences for persons who do
this. Thank you for any help you can give.

- Windows XP Security >> Supid question, help though!Hi, I need to know something really simple, so simple I can't find an answer
anywhere as of course everyone knows this but me! ;-) How do I "browse" to a
file or folder in the command prompt window? That is my question. I am
learning scripting, and while I am able to double click and get a dialog box
with the script in it, I am unable to open the scrip in the command prompt as
it keeps telling me "Unable to locate file". The file is right there in the
My Docements folder in a sub-folder called My Scrips. The command prompt has
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name then the curser blinks. I tried putting
My Documents at the curser point, but it returned an "invalid command" My not
recongnized as an internal command.
I know this is stupid, but somebody please tell me how to do this right?
Thanks very much,

- Windows XP Security >> Please advise on re-installation.Hi,
I run WinXP SP2 on a 32 bit system. The computer is running quite well,
and I have images of my main drive which holds the System partition, on
another hard drive.
I now propose to upgrade to a 64 bit system and have purchased the
necessary components.
Will you please tell me what is the best practice these days:-
Should I simply install my present main drive onto the new motherboard
and hope that everything will run as before?
Or should I Install a new clean hard drive onto the new motherboard, and
use software to transfer all the partitions and files from the present
main drive onto the new drive?
Or should I do a clean re-install of everything onto the new hard drive,
on the new motherboard?
Your advice would be much appreciated, especially if you could give
brief reasons for your recommendations.
Royston.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Requirement For "Maintenance Password" on Boot UpXP PRO == We are using WinXP in a mining environment.
Recently, XP, upon boot, at the point I would expect to see
user selection, XP makes the statement " 'pc name'
maintenance password _________". It will not release
without it. None has been assigned.
This request for a maintenance password never existed
before. We have operated for about four (4) months
without this showing up.
Can anyone tell me what's happening??? How can this
message be inhibited?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated. HELP.

- Windows XP Support >> Is there a bootlog.txt (or equivalent) in WXP?I booted up with the F8-bootlog option, and got as a result a
'bootlog.dat' file. I assume that the bootlog.dat file is same as the
old bootlog.txt file under W98.
Anyway, I can't read it with normal programs. Is there a 'bootlog
analyzer' that I can download/use to see the content of the bootlog
file? Of course, I would like a demo/shareware/freeware copy.
Or, as an alternative, is there another way I can 'log' my boot-up and
look at such a 'log'?. You see. the boot-up is hanging up 2-3 minutes
during boot suddenly and I have no idea why.
Help?

- Windows XP Hardware >> No windows audio control... or audio for that matter !Hi all,
Wonder if anyone has come across this before:
I have an NForce chipset PC with Athlon XP. Onboard sound and lan etc.
The sound works fine with media player (wav, mp3 and videos) and games but
doesn't work with windows sound effects. Any ideas why?
The default audio device is corrupt in some way. In the control panel I'm
unable to "preview" windows sound effects and the default audio device is
blank... I can choose the Nforce device and press OK but the setting returns
to the blank state again.
I've removed the hardware from "devices" and re-applied the Nvidia drivers
off the website to no avail.
Any ideas what to do next ??

Windows XP Setup >> ME removal
My PC originally came with Windows ME installed - drive C.
I have since split the hard disk and installed XP - drive D.
I no longer have a use for ME and I want to remove it and put XP on drive C
and, eventually, remove drive D leaving XP installed on drive C.
I have tried to install XP but I don't get the option of removing ME. The
installation program keeps selecting drive D which I don't want to change -
at least initially.
How do I replace ME with XP?

I have an AMD XP 2100+ processor off of a SOYO Dragon Plus KT333 Motherboard..it should run at around 1.73 mHZ and sometimes, it does... other times it only runs at 866... I've tried everything I know how to do.. and I cant figure out why sometimes it works right, and sometimes it doesnt....

- Windows XP Setup >> Domain profiles.I'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup to post this, but this is
something I always wished I knew how to do. Scenario:
Small network of 2000/XP workstations. Domain controller is added to
network, computers are added to domain. Domain user accounts are added as
local users/administrators on workstations using "control userpasswords2"
OK, now what I *want* to do, is use an existing profile on the workstation
for when the user logs in to the domain. I've tried copying the profile to
where the computer loads the domain profile from (usually C:\Documents and
Settings\user.DOMAIN) and checking permissions, etc.. no joy...
Is there any easy way to do this? Do any proposed solutions also allow one
to copy a domain profile to a local user profile?
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP >> Cannot delete item from desktopThis is a re-posting. Thanks to those who have already
offerred suggestions.
I had to access some very old DOS based Lotus 1-2-3
files - Release 2.4. I installed my old software and
wanted a shortcut to it on the desktop. Instead of
creating a shortcut, I actually moved the 123.exe file
from its folder to the desktop. When I try to delete
it, I get a message saying: "Cannot delete 123. It is
being used by another person or program. Close any
programs that might be using the file and try again."
Nothing or no one is using the file. The computer is
part of a network at home. But even when this computer is
the only one on, I still can't delete it.
I have tried the following - none of which work:
- booting in safe mode and trying to delete it
- using the add/remove programs option in Control Panel
(it's a DOS based program and doesn't install
itself into Windows and doesn't appear as a program in
Add/Remove programs).
- bringing up the Task Manager to see if there is a
version of it running. There isn't, so there is no task
to end.
- checking that I have Administrator's rights.
Anyone with any ideas?

- Windows XP Network >> 'Protected Object' query10-Jul-06
'Protected Object' query.
Accidentally went into "My Network Places \ Network Tasks \
View Icon for Networked UPnP devices" - via Explorer.
Popping up at top of list in right pane was
"ADSL Modem/Router IGD". Properties gave the device address as
"http://192.xxx.x.xxx/" (have x'd out the last 3 sets - in
case it's a private thing).
This revelation was fortuitous as I'd been looking for info on
accessing the Router in case a problem ever crops up here.
When dble-clicked object, got "Connect to 192.xxx.x.xxx" User
Name / Password box - for which I don't know the details as
this small home net was set up by some IT man over a year ago.
When clicked "cancel" or "OK" (among others), got message:
Protected Object. This object on the ROM PAGER SERVER is
Protected".
Question: How to access the Router without the rqrd info?
My knowledge on this is marginal at best but having read thru
and downloaded many of the excellent 'networking' solutions at
this forum over many months, in effort to pick up on the issues,
it appears that one of these days I may need to tackle
items like 'DHCP', among others - and I'd like to be ready
for it.
Appreciate any info whatever on subject.

However....the host can ping 127.0.0.1 but when i try to ping 192.168.10.1 i
get the now dreaded "reqyuest timed out".
At the same time my task bar is showing that my LAN is connected and running
at a speed of 100 Mbps.
in desperation i've bought another network card and put it in a spare slot
to se if this will fix the problem, but this just tells me that i have a
