- Windows XP Hardware >> Hidden mass storage deviceI just plugged in a mass storage device through a USB port, and it appears as
if it installed correctly.
I go to "My Computer" and the device is not there.
I deinstalled, rebooted, turned off all security, and plugged the device in
again.
I opened "Device Manager" and everything seems in order.
Still no mass storage device listed in "My Computer."
Have the same issue with a PC Card Adapter, and a digital video camera.
Any help would be appreciated

- Windows XP >> Fax consoleHi,
Am using Windows XP Service pack 2 and trying to use the fax console.
No problems with sending and recieving faxes, but when someone rings in when
i am recieving a fax it disconects it. Have ADSL splitter, on the phone side
i have doubled up phone and fax. Have contacted phone provider they sugested
to have a duet line, for a fee!!!.
Any help please....

- Windows XP Hardware >> System Management Bios driverI have 2 issues on my compaq laptop.The first says in the device manager
that the system management bios driver is missing or corrupted and second
issue is XP requires to be activated each time I reboot.Are these related
and how do I resolve them.

Automatic Updates has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry

Anyone know how to fix it?

- Windows XP Setup >> Reinstall of XP Pro restarts at start of GUII had a problem w/ my XP Pro SP1 install, so I reinstalled "in place" from
the SP1 CD (i.e. not a clean install).
When install's GUI phase starts, the mouse cursor appears and turns into a
"wait" cursor for a few seconds, then the machine reboots. I never see
the normal status screen of the GUI phase.
I've tried re-doing the "in place" install several times, to no avail.
I've searched through USENET and the Microsoft web site and tried several
suggestions, none of which helped.
I can boot the machine to another partition, but would really like to get
this install up and running.
I'm at a loss to try to figure this out. Any help is appreciated.

- Windows XP >> Print Job - Cancelling - Why so long?Can anybody explain why it (sometimes - most generally) takes so long to
Cancel a Print Job (Control Panel/Printers & Faxes)?? I find a job in a
given printer's Print List - highlight it and click Cancel - and, XP tells
me that it is cancelling it... but, nothing happens for a long time. I
usually take a coffee break..) Is there a faster way to cancel a job??
(The reason I need to cancel so often is that I have two types of printers
on my computer (one for high volume b/w printing and the other for low
volume color) with a Centronixs A/B switch... Of course, every now and then
we "click" on one printer while we are "pointed" at the other... Of curse,
the "other" printer starts spitting out volumes of @#$%&(^%$#@# - with no
intention of ever stopping until all paper is gone... arg.... )

- Windows XP >> Search function has stopped searchingI'd been using my Windows XP Professional for about 6
months when it stopped searching. I'll search for a file
I know is on the drive and the answer comes back "Search
is complete. There are no results to display." It
appears the only items it finds are those ON the desktop
and nothing in any other file. I've tried reseting all
of the "controls" without success.
I'm an Elementary School Principal with numerous files
with "teacher" in them, yet NO results.

- Windows XP Security >> File and Print Sharing QuestionI have a question about File and Print Sharing in relation to
Administrator shares (C$, Admin$, IPC$). My question is, does File
and Print Sharing have to be installed AND enabled in order for me to
access Administrator shares? From what I read in other newsgroup
posts, all that matters is that File and Print Sharing is installed
(this installs/starts the Server service) but you do not have to
enable it (I disabled by unchecking the box next to File and Print
Sharing after I installed it).
However I tested this and it appears that I cannot access the
Administrator shares on that machine from my machine. I get this
error message:
Windows cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is
correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off. If
Windows still cannot find the network path, contact your network
administrator.
Here is some additional info:
-I am not the system administrator, but I added my account to the
Administrators group on the machine where I disabled File and Print
Sharing.
-Both machines are WinXp Pro.
-If I type net share at the machine where I disabled File and Print
Sharing, I can still see the Administrator shares.
-I verified the Server service is running
-If I enable File and Print Sharing, I can access the Administrator
shares. However my client will not accept having File and Print
Sharing enabled.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Can't transfer project to my DV cam anymoreI have done several short projects using still photos and music. Transfered
all of them to my DV cam. Worked great. I have now completed a very long
project, 44 minutes. Went to transfer it, got the error message that the
system needed to shut down. I do not have IE7. I tried to transfer some of
the old shorter projects over again, got the error message this time as well.
The program did crash several times over the weeks I was working on this
project. It would just freeze up. Any help would be appreciated. Please know
that I do not know much about computers. I have read a lot on this group, but
not sure which, if any, of these cures is best.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> bugcheck in xp!!!ive had this problem for a while now and i dont seem any
closer to getting it sorted!! whilst doing a virus check
(using norton internet security pro 2003), xp quit and
gave me the following error message:-
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x0000000a (0x00000004, 0x00000002, 0x00000001,
0x804f50b0). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini111703-01.dmp.
i have also had a similar 'bugcheck' error a few times
whilst using IE6. i have the latest drivers for all my
hardware and there is no spyware on my PC.
can someone please help...im very close to giving up on
my PC!!

- Windows XP >> hibernate + freezesWindows XP....when my computer comes out of hibernating,
my computer screen has no icons-no taskbar...it only has
my background(wallpaper)on the desktop. When I press
Ctrl-Alt-Del everything comes back to normal. I can
click icons(Start button, etc)(The icons actually move)
but nothing happens. It won't even turn off....I have to
press my computer ON-OFF switch to restart.

- Windows XP Security >> Creating "Ghost CD" on XP for System RecoveryI'd like to ask whether it is possible to create a "Ghost CD" for my computer
(with Windows XP). I want to create a CD such that if anything happened to my
computer, I could recover all my settings, files and everything with the CD
at any computer. Is this possible? How do you do it?

Up until yesterday I had no problem getting onto a particular web site now
every time I try I get the following message
[You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an
ErrorDocument to handle the request. ]
I am having no trouble with any other site just this one....I am running XP
& have IE7 ....can anyone tell me if there is anything I can do to fix
this.....

but how can I supply the correct username/password if I can't get the page
to open at all......I haven't changed anything on my computer & it worked OK
before.

Yes I have been able to get onto the site with IE7.......whatever the problem
was it seems to be fixed now as I can get onto it........I can also get onto
this page (the Microsoft forum) today but couldn't yesterday.

operating system from Windows 95 to 2000, but was replaced
in XP. I loved it and found it far more capable than the
replacement viewer.
Is is still available for XP?

- Windows XP >> IP address not "findin" automatically as it shouldI was hit with lightening yesterday and had to get a new cpu and router. One
of my machines identifies the IP address correctly, but the second is unable
to complete the connection to the internet. The router company says it is a
system problem rather than a router problem. Can someone advise???

and there was no sound.. I have no conflicts, and
everything is set to defult.. I have not changed
anything.. I just had my pc reformatted and had xp pro

As I said in my previous message, I am using a D-link
DI624 wireless router. The router is connected to my DSL -
and DSL into the router. My computer is in the first port
of the router. The other computer was using dial-up an an
internet connection but is at times receiving the DSL
connection. I have tried numerous settings for the Wizard,
but nothing is working. I have not set up an internet
gateway on either of the computers, it says the router is
working as the gateway just fine.
I hope this info is more helpful to you, since I am
completely baffled.

- Windows XP >> Mounted DVD causes memory problemsI had a problem with explorer.exe loading over 350MB into memory and
swapping in and out of VM virtually locking the system.
I tracked the problem down to a DVD as an ".img" file mounted using
Alcohol1120. While the image file was mounted any use of windows (eplorer
below a couple of levels) would trigger the memory usage.
I discovered that if the same file is renamed to ".iso" then mounted the
problem does not recurr.
I have not seen any other references to this problem and was wondering if
anyone had any comments. Is it likely that the way my system is configured
to treat .img is causing this. If so what settings/ keys are likely
suspects.
".img" is not a registered file type on my system.

- Windows XP Network >> HELP linking two routers end to endI bought a Netgear router RP114 so I can use VPN but I still need to
have my other computer go through my old router Panasonic KX-HGW200.
I hooked up the Netgear and it works great.
I hooked the Panasonic to the Netgear and can not access the
Internet?
I changed the ip range on the two routers so they don't overlap.
Can you please help me out?
Is there a way to configure the routers so that the Panasonic works
off the Netgear?

- Windows XP Setup >> SP2 and network problemsHi,
I am a network administrator trying to test SP2 before I
deploy it across my network. All my machines are
connected to an Active Directory Server that Runs Windows
2000. When I install SP2 on my test machine, I am able to
log into the network and then shortly after it appears
that I lose network connectivity. I cannot access network
resources and renew/repair my network adapter/IP address.
I have disabled the new WinXP firewall, but no luck. If I
remove SP2, then everything goes back to working
properly. Anyone else have a problem like this?

changed to "account unknown" under the System Properties/Advanced/User
Profiles. I "see" the "Account Unknown" listed, but I am unable to access
it. I tried signing in as the administrator, but no luck. I checked Windows
help online, but no luck. I called Sony Vaio support, (support?), no luck.
I am running XP Home Edition SP2 will all updates.
I have found out that the files aren't gone, according to online readings,
but getting to them is another matter. I'm a minister and all of my
sermons/funerals/baptisms/etc. are connected with the "Owner" profile. Yes,
I know, back up... I have the hard copies, but that's not real helpful.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently changed to XP.
For the order of files in a directory I usually use Details or List
then often sort the file/folder listing into date order with most
recent on top. In 98 this arrangement listed the folders at the
beginning. Thus when I open a folder I immediately see the list of
subfolders (in case I want to go deeper or transfer a recent file to a
folder) followed by recent files in case I want to use one again or
move it to a subfolder. I usually find this arrangement by far the
most convenient.
But, XP puts the folder list on the bottom instead of leaving them at
the top. This is *very* inconvenient.
Is there a way to make XP sort/order file/folder lists like 98 does
it?

Hi, I have been using Windows XP since it came out. I still miss
Win98 in the following respect:
In many directories, I like to use the "details" view that windows
explorer provides, and set it to show me the most recently modified
files.
Back in Win98, this view combination shows folders first - and then
files. (Most recent folder to least recent folder, then most recent
file to least recent file.)
This way, at a glance, you could see all recently changed files and
all folders without resorting or scrolling down to the end of what may
be a very long list of files.
I loved it that way, it made sense, it was convienient.
In Windows XP, this behavior was changed. Someone decided to make it
harder.
Either you can list:
Files shown first ( most recent file to least recent file), and then
folders (most recent folder to least recent folder).
or
Files first (least recent to most recent), and then folders (least
recent to most recent).
So, my "simple" question is: how can I make Windows XP show folders
first, and then files like Win98?

Ultimately I wish to Arrange the Icons inside my Folders thus:
All concurrently in "details":
1st by: Sub folders (Alphabetically a-z)
2nd by: Links (Alphabetically a-z)
3rd by: Zipped folders (Alphabetically a-z)
4th by: regular files (by Date with newest files at the top)
Then, set that regime to apply to all folders
If that can't be done I would settle for say:
All concurrently in "details":

Then, set that regime to apply to all folders
Is any of this possible? I believe this would greatly assist me in
locating my files.

internet is Satelite. The only way satelite can be
received is through the USB. I have a old WinME machine
that accepted the internet from the satelite and then
shared it through the extra NIC card I had which fed into
a linksys router. In an attempt to share the internet
faster I am using a laptop with XP home. I have the
internet working through the USB and I have a connection
to the router but I cannot share the internet. How do I
share the internet in Windows XP Home?....through a
linksys router.
