- Windows XP Network >> cannot add or see printers although they do workI have an xp pro machine, 3.0 mghz, 1g ram, pent 4, on a 10/100 tcp/ip Lan. I
print and plot to an hp laserjet 4 plus and an hp designjet 1050c plotter.
Both are working fine. The hitch is that I wanted to check the properties for
the laserjet the other day and when I selected the "start/settings/printers
and faxes" they DO NOT SHOW. Also I am UNABLE TO ADD A PRINTER. I have
checked and the script services are started which I thought they would be as
I can print just Fine but I need to fix this. I appreciate any help I can get
on this, I have searched the newsgroups and only find fixes for NT (which I
tried to no avail). I will watch for responses here but you could also e-mail
me at : rhots995@netzero.com.
This is a new machine with xp pro sp2. I am the admin. I am the IT/CAD
manager here although my IT experiance is learn as I go. (Lucky me). We have
a mix of equipment here: 3 xp machines (mine is the only sp2), 1 ME machine
and the rest are 98se's. We have a 98se machine for a FILE SERVER. We use
LanTastic for our software to asign rights to different groups of workers. IE
the engineers don't have access to the office files etc. As far as I can see
nothing is hidden. By the way, THE LASERJET 4 PLUS IS ON A SEPARATE, STAND
ALONE PRINT SERVER, not run through the file server.
Thanks for your help,
Rick

- Windows XP Setup >> Display properties after SysPrepHello All
Has anyone seen this before?
I have a number of DELL Latitude laptops that have now
been rolled out with an XP image that has been
distributed using the SysPrep imaging method.
Once I boot the laptop up and logon with any network user
account I cannot view the Diplay Properties page properly.
Keeping in mind that we have a Group Policy in place that
hides all pages except for the 'Settings' page. We have
done this so users can change the screen size and
resolution when using projectors etc.
Local Administrator account can see all Display
Properties pages, but any user, including a user who is a
member of the local administrators group cannot see
anything in this 'Settings' tab, it is blank ???
So the Settings tab is there, but has nothing on it, i.e.
no Screen size settings, no Display resolution settings
no nothing, just a blank screen !!!
The Video chip on the DELL Latitudes is by ATI. I have
tried updating and reinstalling the Video drivers, but
nothing changes.
Do you know if this can be changed by hacking the
Registry or some other fix ???
your Help is appreciated

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Sound disappears in Timeline for some clips.. help!I'm running MM2 on WinXP Home on a Dell Inspiron 600m (1.7 P4-M, 35 GB free space)
I can capture video perfectly and I've spliced the clips to exactly how I want them. I've put everything in the timeline. BUT when I try playing it on the timeline, many of the clips have either no sound at all or un-synchronized sound.
I checked the audio component on the Timeline, but it looks fine. Nothing's muted, everything *looks* synched, and the individual clips play perfectly from the Collection folders. It's just once it's in the timeline or storyboard!
This happens even with just three short 10-second clips. Can anyone help? I have a project due tomorrow!

- Windows XP >> Music Folders - Play All not workingWhen I am in a music folder full of mp3 files, I click on the Play All
option and nothing happens. This used to fire up WMP and play all the tracks
in the folder. I have checked out Folder Options and can find nothing wrong,
clicking on single or multiple mp3 files all works ok.
I guess that there is a small command corrupted in the registry. Can anybody
help?

- Windows XP >> mouse sticking on tooltipsHello,
I am running XP Pro SP2 on a fast new laptop. For a few weeks all has
been good but over the last few days my cursor has been sticking
randomly when I move it over or passed an icon, link, the start bar,
anything that generates a tool tip. It's only momentary but is
beginning to become very annoying. My mouse is also new, a Microsoft
Notebook Optical Mouse 3000. This occurs even by running the cursor
across the taskbar straight after start up with no software
applications running.
I have a second similar laptop with the same setup and running
virtually the same software and even an identical mouse. The second
machine in almost a year old and does not have this problem. Swapping
the mice between machines doesn't fix the problem.
Has anyone else experienced this - does anyone know the solution?
Thanks
Shutey

- Windows XP Setup >> Intermediate User having major problemI have a 5 year old Gateway , 1 gmhz, 512m Ram, Windows XP upgraded from ME.
All of a sudden when I click on Start/My Computer the icons that used to be
there showing my Plextor DVD Drive/Burner and my DVD/CD drive have
disappeared.
I have run Spybot/Lavasoft/Norton/Microsoft Beta/spyhunter and feel
resonably comfortable the machine is clean.
I have restarted over and over. I have Shut Down and turned off power from
the wall to no avail
And to add to this for some strange reason my "hide inactive icons' feature
will not function even tho the appropriate box is checked.
Anyone have any suggestions? I really would like to have the icons for my
drives show up in My computer.

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> problem when my computer boots
devldr32.exe has to do with your sound card.Did you go to
task manager and click on said program and click end
process? Also, try going to www.creative.com and see if
they have new drivers for your sound card. What your
experiencing at start-up is normal, but may be quicker
once you get rid of some start up programs not needed.
....Happy Holidays.

- Windows XP >> Wrong MS Icons - Start Menu & DesktopFor the most part, my problem seems to be limited to Microsoft program
icons. Specifically:
- Start Menu: All program group icons and sub-groups are a generic
folder icon. Upon opening program groups, individual program icons for
non-Microsoft applications display properly (with a few exceptions, such as
some Norton SystemWorks apps). As a general rule, Microsoft program
applications appear as a generic blank page icon (with a few exceptions).
- Desktop: Icons for .wav files on my desktop display incorrectly (opens
with Windows Media Player). Similarly, a .doc file on my desktop is
represented by the same icon as that for the .wav files.
System is up-to-date with respect to critical Windows Updates. TweakUI's
"Rebuild Icons" repair utility doesn't resolve the issue. Norton AntiVirus
reports no infected files (current virus definitions) .
One other symptom possibly worth noting -- at times, right-clicking on a
shortcut or application requires a long time for the context menu to load
without other applications running -- 15 seconds (1.0 GHZ PIII with 768 MB
or RAM). Once the context menu has loaded for that item, subsequent
right-clicks are instantaneous.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

- Windows XP >> XP Pro cannot obtain IP address from DHCPI have an installation of XP Pro that has recently stp obtaining IP
information from the DHCP server. I can manually set the IP address
and the machine will see and connect to other computers on the network

to be correct and I'm not sure what else to address to try to correct
the issue. Any assistance would be greatly apprecciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Can't log inI just installed XP on a machine that had Win98 on it. It
never asked me for a password for the initial account, but
it created the account anyway. I just have no idea what
the password should be or how I should get into my
computer. I only have one log on option and I can't
figure out how to switch to administrator, even though I
never set up a password for that either.

- Windows XP Support >> Writing to CDI've been trying to write files to CD, but the computer doesn't recognize
I've put a CD in the slot. When I try to 'write files to CD' it tells me
there is no CD in the drive. I've tried different CDs, dusting the slot
innards and the CDs. Anyone know what's wrong?

- Windows XP Support >> Need Help With DRMI recently installed Rhapsody Radio. It works fine except that when I
launch the program I get an error message telling me that the DRM files are
corrupt. Clicking on the "more info" link send me to Microsoft Article
810422. The I can not restore or back up the licenses. I've tried
following the instructions but it does not appear that I have a DRM folder.
A "find files" shows some DRM files and a folder, but none of the files such
as the "DRMv2.sst" is present...only a set-up file.
Also I tried visiting the website to restore the licenses...the button that
you are supposed to click is not active.
Is there nay way to fix this? I do not mind losing the music I have but I'd
really like the system to function correctly. Can I do a fresh install of
the original licenses? When searching I did see what looked to be some
back-up files but I'm not sure.

- Windows XP >> Strange behaviour of Task Bar.Hello all,
I installed windows xp afresh and everything went fine.
The strange experience however is that when windows starts and settles down
all items (quick launch programs including "start" ) on the taskbar wont
react to any mouse click!! I will first have to click an item on the
desktop (like the Recycle Bin) to start before the "start" and other items
on the taskbar can be started with mouse clicks.
Alternatively, I will use CTRL-ALT-DEL for taskmanager and then immediately
close it in order to activate the taskbar.
Is there anyone with this experience? How is it solved?

- Windows XP >> Startup user selection vs small-fill-in-the-blankStupid question, but I forget how to get my initial screen to log in to go
back to the XP default showing the users (with a silly icon). I was messing
with settings to get sharing working within my subnet and inadvertantly got
the settings stuck with the rectangle wherein I must fill in my user name.
(such as when one has specific domain or netware apps to take into
consideration).
So how do I get the settings back to start up to show the user's names and
icons - wherein I can click and fill in the password?
Thanks,
