- Windows XP Network >> Strange issues with e-mail and My Network PlacesI've had a problem develop recently whereby I can
receive, but not send, e-mail... Possibly related is the
fact that I can no longer access any of my ISP locations
via My Network Places or my web authoring application,
Dreamweaver. Both my ISP and web host have verified that
all my mail account settings are correct, and that the
mail servers are operating correctly. I can browse the
web with no problems. The trouble is with e-mail sending
and FTP access only.
Tech details, FYI: Windows XP Professional, accessing the
web via DSL, Linksys router, and Linksys 5-port switch.
Further info... I didn't notice any of these problems
until last week, when I installed the Linksys 5-port
switch to replace an old 4-port hub. But I really can't
see where adding such a component would affect mail
sending and FTP access.
Thanks for any assistance you can offer! Please respond
using the mail address supplied, with NOSPAM removed, of
course!

- Windows XP Support >> Getting rid of an old address bookI am using XP-Pro and OE6
If I am sending an email, I can go to Tools-select recipients and find the
right address. The address book is set up to sort in order of last name.
But if I simply go to the To: line of the email and start typing, the
address that pops up is
an old address that is sorted on first names. This old listing is out of
date.
How can I get rid of the old list?
Thanks

- Windows XP >> help again... (sorry)Hi,
I posted an earlier message, but it has moved so far down
the list in such a short time that I thought no one would
reply to me if I added new information. My problem was
that Windows XP home edition would not allow me to access
my user acount; infact, it had created a temporary one
that lacked most of my old data. Thanks to your help, I
was able to restore most of my data to a new acount (by
cutting it and pasting it). However, there is still some
files and default setups that I would like to locate (if
I can), such as my outlook express e-mail account, as
well as all of my old e-mails. I also do not have my MSN
account. Any additional help that anyone could provide
would be marvelous. Thank you so much for your help.

- Windows XP Setup >> Can I restrict access to CD write capability?I'm wondering if there is a way for me to control which users have the
capability to write to a CD. I want them to be able to read, but not write.
I need control over the actual CD Drive, not any specific CD. Is there a way
to do this in XP Pro, and if so, how?
I've used a piece of software called DeviceLock in the past, but it has one
glaring flaw: While I can, in theory, allow read but not write via
DeviceLock, if an unauthorized user opens up the EasyCD Creator application,
it just bypasses the DeviceLock controls and lets them create a CD.
Thanks,
Jewels

- Windows XP Setup >> XP reinstallationI had a RAM module fail, which apparently corrupted my OS
(XP Home).
Working with Dell, I was able to reinstall XP over the
corrupted OS, but none of my programs work. The
technician mention I'd have to reinstall my programs, and
then could retieve my exisiting data on the hard drive.
This is somewhat convoluted, but here goes.....installed
XP Home with a different user name. The original user
data is still "visible" on the hard drive under the "old"
user. Do I really need to reinstall all the programs?
I am having a great deal of difficulty with my Norton
programs as they won't go in.
Any help would be appreciated....thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Accessing network drivesThis is a follow on question from a previous post of mine.
I have a network of 2 laptops and a desktop, linked with a Linksys ADSL
Router by hardwire.
I want to install an application on each machine (Act6) with the database
and common files being accessible to all three machines. Can I plug in a
network hard drive to my router and put the database files on there so that
all three machines will access them or do I need to install a server? One
laptop and the desktop run XP but the other laptop runs W2000.
Thanks

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> No Video Transitions for some peopleHi, I administer a network in a school.
When logged in with Administrator rights, I have all the
Vido Transitions, and Video Effects available to me.
When a user logs in, without Administrator rights, they get
no Transitions, and only two effects.
Am I right in thinkin the transitions are kept in dlls in
system32 directory?
Everyone has read access to this folder, and I tried giving
Full access to this folder on my PC, but that didn't help.
How do I get everyone all the transitions?
Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> Help!!!!Hello!
I have a windows XP Professional connected to a NT domain
and I need to enable in the Windows XP the quick logon
feature, I mean the welcome screen with the small icons
representing the users. What I have now is an NT like
login window where you have to ctrl+alt+del and select the
domain and everything. I've tried, logged in as
Administrator, the control panel "users" feature but can
not find anything; it just list the current users and
allows me to add, delete or edit them.
Please help!!!
Thanks in advance!

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> errors in movie...My slideshow works great until I finish my movie. Once I try to save it to my
computer as a movie file, or try to burn it to cd or disc, upload to the web,
etc. When I run it it either has random pics show up as a black screen or it
gets stuck on a random picture but the audio still plays. I have saved it and
re-tried several times and it is never the same pics that it happens to?
Please help. This is a graduation movie that parents are waiting to recieve
copies of. It plays great off of my hard drive thru WMM only. I can't seem to
duplicate it!
Thanks

Windows XP Security >> Msconfig
I have two questions regarding the System Configuration
Utility. Specifically, the Startup tab.
1. Is the item "sys" with the command "regedit /s
c:/windows..." a vital part of windows or is it possibly
spyware or something of that sort? Bottom line: can I
disable it from loading at startup?
2. I have 2 items that have no name & no command
associated with them, only a location. Can I disable
them from loading at startup?
Please help!

- Windows XP >> Control Panel in XP ProMy computer on the whole is working fine with one
exception (isn't there always one exception?!). I can
not access Control Panel. Whenever I click on Control

Desktop Recovery page. Has anyone come accross this or
have suggestions on how it may be repaired?
Thanks

- Windows XP Network >> 1-2 minute dealy on startupI have noticed many other posts and thought I would add
mine for some feedback.
Clean installation of Windows XP. Install SP1.
Computer will reach the desktop and load then hangs for 1-
2 minutes. The hard drive does not respond at all in that
time.
Unable to launch programs during this time.
It will resume the load and finish within 5-10 seconds.
Nothing running in Startup.
No virus or Spyware involved. Something in SP1 mkaes it
hang during startup.
I have also, performed clean installation, installed all
programs including AV, computer will boot normally
multiple times and connect to the internet. Perfect.
Installed SP1 again, computer hangs at boot.
If network cable is plugged in, it will hang. If not
computer will not. No mapped drives.
I have captured SVCHOST trying to connect to
239.255.255.250 Port 1900
&
255.255.255.255 DHCP
I have already checked this and the registry entry is
already correct.

- Windows XP >> Updating BIOS in Win XP-activation security wont allowLast year I tried to install the latest BIOS update for
my ASUS A7V8X board, but XP thought I was trying to steal
XP and the activation system would not allow boot up. So
I reinstalled my old BIOS and everything worked fine. I
communicated with MSFT and they denied my problem
existed, yet it's clear that the original version of XP
would not allow certain hardware or BIOS updates, e.g. if
you replace too much hardware at once, XP assumes it's
being bootlegged. Does anybody know if MSFT has fixed
this problem in XP, or will I need to try a BIOS update
again to see if they have??????

- Windows XP >> HELPWhen I finish working on Windows XP we generally disconnect from the
broadband internet. Unfortunately whether we log off or stay logged on as
one of our family users after a while the computer completely locks and won't
do anything, can't even CNTL-ALT-DELETE. This has nothing to do with it
automatically going to standby mode after half an hour, it seems to lock
earlier than that. Any help would be appreciated.
