- Windows XP >> DVD Burner doesnt show when I have a disk inMy computer came with a preinstalled DVD and CD burner. I can sucessfully
burn audio cds, but whenever I try to burn or copy something to DVD I keep
getting the message, "put a disk in the drive" when I have already done so.
My system obviously recognises the drive but not for the DVD part.. Any ideas?

- Windows XP Security >> Inactivity PasswordWhen I don't use my computer for at least 15 minutes, then it automatically
brings up a password screen. The only way to begin working on my computer
again is to enter a password. Is there a way to disable this feature? I
have been told that it can be fixed on Control Panel, Display and using the

- Windows XP Update >> Upgrading to Service Pack 2 IssuesMy hard drive crashed and had to install a new one on a Dell laptop.
Reinstalled XP and all associated updates.
When I try to update to service pack 2 it hangs on "checking product key."

have.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Change default location for project files? In MM2, is it possible to change the default location for saving project
files?
It appears to be permanently set to C:\....\My Videos, and I want to save
all my projects on my E drive, and in a folder called Projects. I have to
navigate to that folder every time I create / save a project. (I find "My
Videos" too general a name and I like to split my work into separate folders
i.e. Captured Video, Projects, Saved Movies).
I know how to change the default for temp files but that is not the issue.
My query concerns only Project files.
Thanks

- Windows XP Hardware >> CD-Drive Problems, (post #2)Two are listed below.
WRITTEN BY: RANDY (AUG 29 2004 4:08AM PDT)
I have a remarkably similar problem in that I just
installed an Artec 16x DVD-ROM drive with a Plexwriter
8/4/32A CD-RW already in use. My bios detects both drives
fine as does Windows XP, but the DVD-ROM only worked at
first install; and after that (even though detected) will
not read ANY disks. Windows XP reports 'no device
conflicts' and 'This device is working properly', but
that
is not true with the DVD-ROM (the CD-RW reads disks
fine).
I've tried multiple primary and secondary IDE connection
and jumper configurations with the same results; I even
went out and bought a PCI Ultra ATA IDE controller card,
put only the DVD-ROM over to it, and it WORKED!
Unfortunately, it only worked the first time (as before),
and after the next computer boot up, again can no longer
read ANY disks. Both drives reported fine by Win XP w/no
conflicts. HERE'S THE KICKER: IF I DISABLE THE CD-RW IN
WINDOWS DEVICE MANAGER, THE DVD-ROM STARTS WORKING FINE!
All my drivers are up to date. It appears there is some
sort of conflict between the drives, but it is beyond me
to figure out how to get both them to work at the same
time. I've tried all possible separations on the IDE
cables (and the PCI card), but that only results in one
or
the other device stopping working. Please, can someone
help me get both drives working at the same time?

- Windows XP Security >> Internet Explorer OR Outlook Express Virus? or What?Hi All!
A program automatically launches a site ("w.xx.gigan.to" where 'xx' is the
letters that I can't recall) and start to download a CAB file using Internet
Explorer. I tried to close it and a message box appear "You must choose yes
to install". So I didn't click anything and I shut down the Internet
Explorer using Task Manager.
And it didn't go away because I can see the movement in network activity. So
I disable the LAN. That's when I got a dialog box asking which connection I
want to use to connect to the Internet because 'you' or a program requested
information from <<site>>. Sorry guys I was really panicked and didn't
recorded the site address. But as far as I recall it is: "w.xx.gigan.to"
where 'xx' is the letters that I can't recall. That site also as one line of
text saying "If you are happy....you are a prick" or something like that. By
looking at this, we can concluded that this is a Trojan right? Showing
something interesting (or something that you need time to figure out) in
front of you and start messing up with your computer at the back.
So I start System Restore and I restore it to a previous point and when it
start to shut Windows down, Outlook Express ask a message box "Are you sure
you want to terminate this download?". That's when I concluded that the
virus might have entered (or still entering) to my computer through Outlook
Express. But it could also be thought Internet Explorer or any thing else
for that matter. I can't say for sure. After System Restore , my computer is
ok now.
Another strange thing to note is that this incident happened after I
rebooted my computer after running a security update from Microsoft for
Download.Ject virus detection and removal, which can be accessed via:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/Download_Ject.mspx
Anybody happen to experience similar incident like mine? Or am I the only
one?
My computer has...
- Internet Explorer 6
- Outlook Express 6
- Windows XP SP1
Please, could anyone suggest what on earth is happening to my computer?
Thanks in advance!

Windows XP Update >> Service "Automatic Updates" can not be startet
Hello
I have got a huge problem:
On my Windows 2000 Server the service "Automatic Updates" can not be startet
or restartet. I get the message "Access Denied". I have admin-permissions on
the server. When I try to update over MicrosoftUpdate-Page I get the
Error-Code 0x80070005. I already tried every advice from Microsoft. When I
try to register the "wuaueng.dll" with "regsvr32 wuaueng.dll" I get the same
Error 0x80070005.
The Dll can not be registered

The error code 0x80070005 means, "ERROR ACCESS DENIED"
You may want to read this kb article about your issue,
**/Updates from the Windows Update Web site are not installed and an
"Error 0x80070005: Access is denied" error message is logged to the
Windows Update.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;836926
If all suggesstions does not work try restoring the default permissions
in the system typing this command (start /run /cmd.exe)
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose

- Windows XP Network >> "Use simple file sharing" setting will not stay changed!Hi Everyone,
As the subject states, I am clearing the Use simple file sharing setting
(no check mark). Once I restart the PC, the check mark is back!
Also, connected with this issue, the Forceguest setting under
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
changes back to it's default setting of 00000001 after a reboot (I want it
to stay at 00000000).
I require this setting off as it is affecting my Dell IT Manager, but it
will not keep it's setting!!!
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated!

- Windows XP >> Access WinXP Pro shares from older MS networkI have now been trying to get a box running XP Pro (not joined any domain)
to work in a peer-to-peer network with Win98 and LanMan DOS (network boot
disk).
I understand that MS now have made the peer-to-peer different than earlier,
but I can't really understand in what way. I have been running "Windows XP
Simple File Sharing" and disabled "ForceGuest" in the Reg.database.
So now I am able to share folders like "in the old days" with WinNT Pro and
assign ressources as I am used to.
But... it does not seem to work. When I use a bootdisk (which works up
against a Win2k server) to do a "net use" against the XP Pro, it does not
connect to the XP Pro, but returns an error instead.
If I try to connect (browse via Network Neighbourghood) to the WinXP Pro
from a Win98, it also returns an error. The XP Pro does show up in the
browse list though.
I am accessing with usernames and passwords that are created and granted on
the XP box. What more do I need to do in order to get it working as with
WinNT?
Regards, Lars.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> MegaFLOPS and hyper-threadingI have a P4 2.8 w/HT, 1G Ram. Sony VAIO. (PassMark Performance Test)
I am a day trader and work from home. My software - MetaStock runs some
serious calculations and my computer runs it so slowly - so I have been
trying to get the most I can. I just finished formatting and starting clean.
I have run a test that shows a main score average around 330 and a MegaFLOPS
score of 220. I figured this was good but checked on friends and family's
computers and their MegaFLOPS scores were in the 500s and 600s.
Just for fun - I disabled HT in my BIOS. My main score moved up a little to
349 but my MegaFLOPS went balistic and hit 630 - about 400 points.
1) Which score is more important for normal users? ...overall or MegaFLOPS?
2) I run a ton of programs at the same time - mail, music, MetaStock,
internet, etc., should I have HT on or off ?
3) Is it normal that HT would bring down my MegaFLOPS score?
4) Can I improve this?
Thank you so much !!!!!

I'm having troubles to keep connected when playing games online (such as
BF2).
Always disconnected from the server.
When I'm restarting Windows, the problem is disappeared and repeated again
after.
What are those weird values?
Is my TCP/IP stack screwed up?
Is it possible that my network driver or adapter is buggy?
