- Windows XP Network >> How many simultaneous connections to a server??I have a problem in my office network. It is comprised of XP computers.
Currently, we do not have a "central" server to act as a hub and we have a
problem with one computer being accessed too much simultaneously. The
computer has XP Home on it and only 5 people can access it at one time. I
have to set up a server operating system so that more people can access the
needed files all at the same time. I want to know how many simultaneous
connections can be made to a server operating system. Is it limitless? Or
is there a restriction?

- Windows XP Security >> L2TP/IPSEC problem, followed test lab think its a certificateHi,
I have set up 5 fresh windows 2003 boxes and have followed
the VPN lab document as close as possible.
I am trying to get a test lab up and running and have run
into into a few major problems and I have limited time
left to demo this to my business and a vocal Unix crowd.
I am using the Microsoft article :
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?
url=/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deploy/confeat/r
motevpn.asp
with a future hope of swapping the WinXP box for a PDA
running Mobile 2003 with a wireless network being the
10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2.
But of course I need to get the WinXP CLIENT1 working
first.
After I got the PPTP scenario working (very fast) I ran
into a show stopper with the L2TP scenario in the above
mentioned document.
I end up with an error of: 789 and then after auto
reconnect the error goes to 792.
I followed the steps in the L2TP document and everything
seemed to work fine until of course I tried to connect to
the L2TP connection via the WinXP CLIENT1 box. The steps
I followed were:
1.) Into the DC and configured the automatic certificate
for a computer
2.) Then I did the gpudate on both the DC and VPN box. I
didn't do it on the IAS box ?
3.) I then logged the client into the intranet domain
network under the VPNUser. No problems, I could ping all
the 172.16.0.X boxes and resolve their hostname.domain and
I also checked that the certificate was loaded into
Certificates -> Personal -> Certificate and it was. A
certificate with the clienthostname.domain. I opened up
the certicate and reviewed it properties and there seemed
to be no problems.
4.) I then shutdown the CLIENT1 (XP box) and connected the
WinXP box back to the isolated Internet hub connection.
5.) Logged in again under VPNuser. This time the log on
took forever. Two Event Viewer application errors were
then generated. I quickly checked that I could ping the
VPN server (VPN1) at 10.0.0.2 and I could. It was
successful and the CLIENT1 had now taken on the 10.0.0.1
IP address.
The first of these application errors said:
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your
computer network. (The specified domain either does not
exist or could not be contacted) Group Policy process is
aborted.
The second application error message (genertaed approx 1
min afterwards) said:
Automatic certificate enrollment for Local System failed
to contact the active directory. The specified domain
either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Enrollment will not be performed.
I thought both of these were fine as I wasn't connected
onto the intranet yet for the active directory links to be
performed ???
Anyway, then I setup the L2TP connection as it says in the
doco. I tried it with both mulitnode and LCP turned off
and on, rebooting and anything else etc.. etc..
The error I consistenly get is:
Connecting to 10.0.0.2
Error 789 : The L2TP connection failed bacause the
security layer encountered a processing error during
initial negotiations with the remote computer.
Then when it auto redials it gives me the next error:
Error 792:
The L2TP connection attempt failed because security
negotiation timed out.
LASTLY, I thought I would try the good ol PPTP connection
to see if it was still working and it was. The PPTP
connection was successful adn I could still access the web
site and c:\ on the iis1 box.
I have read some of the news items and found Tom's site
and book a must purchase for me (Does it use WIndows 2003
in the book ?)
Anyway, is my problem that I don't have a Root Certificate
and that I only have a Private one ?
Not sure where I get the the Root Certificate from and
where to put it ? (If this is my problem ??)
Please help me get this demo up and running, I'm so close.
Cheers
Steve

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot Add Network PrinterTwo computers, both running Windows XP Pro w/ Firewall on.
Comp 1 has printer named HPLaserJet4l and works fine.
When I try to use the Add Printer wizard on Comp 2, I get as far as the
"Browse for Printer" dialogue.
There, I can see Microsoft Windows Network
CMS
(the workgourp name)
DELLJAN2005 (the name
of comp 1)
DELLJAN2005 does not show any printers to chose from, so I am stuck there.
On DELLJAN2005 in the "Printers and Faxes" dialogue, HPLaserJet4l is
showing with the hand underneath, it's shared.
File and Printer sharing is shown as an exception in Firewall.cpl
Lan Area Connection Properties shows "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks" checked.
Comp 1 (DELLJAN) can see all shared folders on Comp2, but Comp2 cannot see
these items in COmp1
Many thanks

- Windows XP Network >> Always load Roaming profileWe have desktop and laptops. We want to setup our mobile users only with
laptops, but some do want a desktop at the office.
This does create a issue with roaming profiles. I did found a policy
"Timeout for dialog boxes" to get rid of the warnings with local and roming
profiles.
The only thing i did not solved is the default profile to load when you get
the warning " Your local profile is newer than your Roaming profile. Do you
want to load your local profile".
The timer on this dialog box is going to be set to 0 through grouppolicy's.
But the default setting on this dialog box is to load the local profiles. How
can i default load the roaming profile.

- Windows XP Security >> Turning off auditing for Windows Firewall on XP SP2I have a network where users run XP SP2.
The Windows Firewall is turned off through GPO, but there are still a lot of
failure audit events in the security log.
We don't want to turn off auditing for security events, but I don't want
Windows FW reporting an event on each listening application.
How can I turn off auditing just for the Windows Firewall?

- Windows XP Update >> SP2 UpgradeHi,
I have a legit version of XP Pro. I upgraded to SP2 (I know that because it
shows in the hot fixes and I now have the Windows Firewall icon in the
Control Panel), but when I go to Systems in the Control Panel it says SP1. I
also get the automatic upgrade and it keeps trying to load SP2 but fails.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

- Windows XP Update >> Can't Download SP2 Update for XPWhen I try to re-update my xp home edition sp1 ecition with service pack 2 I
get a blank white screen returned. At the bottom of the screen on the bar it
says done. I can access other microsoft support sites ok but I cant get the
sp2 upgrade to work.
I uninstalled sp2 because I got a crash notice from Microsoft Error report
that said I needed to install SP2 even though I had already installed it. The
reason I uninstalled it was that I couldn't link to the internet from
hyperlinks that were included in emails. nothing happened when I clicked on
them.
I would appreciate any help you can offer.

- Windows XP Security >> Need help configuring firewall settings, please!I am trying to use a software program that keeps giving me a "connection
blocked" error message. The software's tech help says the following as a
workaround:
"Firewall should allow HTTP connections for GET, PUT, and POST."
That's as far as the software's tech info goes, and I have no clue what GET,
PUT, and POST are. (I am admittedly a novice, so perhaps everyone knows what
these refer to except me?!?) Could someone possibly help me understand how
to configure the Windows firewall for this purpose?
Thanks so much for this great resource! I have learned more from y'all on
this site than I've ever learned anywhere else, and I'm really impressed with
how helpful everyone is here. Thanks!

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> BIOS needs upgrade, but can't get to XP desktopI've been racking my brain on this one. I have a STOP error that includes a
message about an attempt to write to read-only memory. I've looked at help
topics from the MS support site that say that my PC is likely in need of a
BIOS upgrade. The error is affecting the ACPI. I have the BIOS flash
program on the hard drive, but can't run it from safe mode. I can't get to
Windows normal boot because of the STOP error. Attempting to boot from a
floppy gives me a 'Disk I/O error".
My question: how can I boot with enough of the Windows system to flash the
BIOS?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Network >> Want to add new XP-PRo PC to existing Windows NetworkI want to connet a new windows XP pro PC to an existing
Windows Network. All the other PC's on the network use
Windows 2000 as there OS.
It looks like the only option is to create a new Windows
XP network. I rant the Add new Network Wizard, and it
appears that what happens is that I am creating the Host
PC on the network, and after that I will need to then run
a Network setup on the other PC's.
After I finish the setup on the XP PC, is it safe for me
to run the network setup on the PC's already on a
network. Also, I think I read somewhere in your help text
that I cannot run the XP network setup on a Windows 2000

I am confused and uncertain as to what to do next. What
do I do next????

I have followed the instructions on the Microsoft website specific to this

Does anybody have any idea what I should do??
