- Windows XP >> XP Home Edition - Installed Program SizeHard drive space is an issue. I can free up the 1.5g
required to do the installation but will be cramped
thereafter.
Is the program going to use all of this space once
installed or will I regain the space that is occupied
currently by WIN98? and temp files created during the
setup?

- Windows XP Hardware >> CD-R/RW, WON'T!!!!!!Hi,
I tried to burn some music to disc and had error. (using Nero)
On further investigation, also found that WMP 9 won't play or burn either.
Bottom line is that samsung CD-R/RW SW-248F can't read or write! It will accept a audio/data disc and attempt to read it (neon flashes) but does no more. I've checked the drivers and they seem ok (?) I've checked the autorun and it's on. It doesn't show up as a problem in device manager. I've deleted and reloaded Nero and WMP 9 to no avail. I know its not a power fault as the drive will spin the disc.
I don't know what else to try!
Any ideas anybody?
PS; The DVD/CD-Rom drive works ok.
TIA

- Windows XP >> Can I install a 32bit WinXP on a 64bit hardware ?Because some programs do not run on my WinXP 64bit installation I am thinking about to install
a 32 bit WinXP on my 64 bit hardware.
Is this possible in general?
How much percent will be the performance loss approx?
I would like to get an impression of how many people have done such an installation.
All the new hardware motherboards and CPUs are 64bit but there a only a few
usenet postings and sales numbers for 64 Bit WInXP.
So I assume that a lot of users must run 32 bit WinXP on 64 bit hardware.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows XP Pro SP2 Rebooting by Itself Randomly Only After 10PM. Please Help! (Don't want to clean reinstall)Folks, I've been pulling my hair out with this problem of mine and am
finally turning to you to see you can help me out.
I've had my new computer just a little over a month now which has
Windows XP Pro updated with SP2 and also with the latest Windows
security updates and up until 3 days ago, it was working just fine.
But since then, it would reboot itself without any warning at all, no
BSOD or no error messages and it would just reboot but only would do
so only after about 10PM or so.
That is why I'm able to write and post this message in this forum now.
Lastnight when I tried to write this, it would reboot again and again,
not even giving me enough time to post a message like this.
I've ran Norton and McAfee AV on my computer and it didn't show
anything unusual. I'm behind a Linksys WRT54G router and I just have
Windows Firewall running on my computer.
The funny thing is, since I work from home, I use the computer quite a
bit during the day as well and the I don't experience the reboot
problem during the day whatsoever.
Only after about 10PM is when my computer would reboot by itself and
would continue to do so, whether I have any apps open or not, whether
I'm actually logged into my account or whether I just let it sit with
the account login window, or even whether the computer's online or
whether I completely pull out the ethernet cable from it.
What I have noticed is that, when it reboots, it'll often have a
problem fully going through the POST process and many times it'll hang
before getting Windows to boot. So, I'll end up using the reset
button on my computer. And sometimes, it'll even hang on the Windows
boot screen where it shows the blue progress bar going from left to
right and I'll again using the reset button.
I'm at my wits end right now and was wondering if someone can suggest
or recommend a few things for me to look into or try to resolve this
problem? I really don't want to do a clean reinstall if I can help
it. I'll give anything a try at this point. TIA.

Windows XP Hardware >> Installed Memory Not Showing
I have a Shuttle AV40R mobo and had 768 Mb of DDR 2100 installed (256Mb in
each of the three slots). I recenlty repalced one of the 256MB modules with
a 1 Gb module, however only 512Mb on the new module is showing up. Total
installed memory shows as only 1 Gb. The mobo manual states that any
combination of memory cards can be installed. Any suggestions as to what is
going on?
Thank you.

Windows XP Hardware >> Installed Memory Not Showing
Is perhaps a double sided memory card? And the motherboard only reads
one side. Please recheck the motherboard specs or contact Shuttle tech
support.

- Windows XP Network >> Network Adapter issues after deleting files that were spywareHere's the thing I was trying to get rid of an issue where I would constantly
get a winupd.dll module not found error. So I googled it, and found some
threads that lead me to get rid of it. I ran Hijackthis! and LSPfix.exe to
see if they would help. Well I guess it worked, but in the process I must
have deleted something I wasn't supposed to.
I tried uninstalling the driver for the card, as well as Microsoft network
services, and tried reinstalling them afterwards, and I'm not able to get my
adapter up and running properly. Seems like some of the services are not
starting up which is why I can't get the connection. I know it's not my
internet connection because I have a laptop on the same network, and it's
working fine. Any ideas on how I can get my adapter back to the way it was?

- Windows XP Network >> Cannot Create File in Shared FolderI have a Win XP Pro machine with SP 2 running on a domain with a mix of Win
XP, Win 2000 and Win 2003 machines. I have been developing a new DotNet web
application feature which writes a file it creates to a shared folder on a
Win 2000 server. Running the web application on my XP Pro machine I get an
error when creating the file in the shared folder. If I move the application
I am working on to a Win 2000 or Win 2003 server it works fine and is able to
write the file to the shared folder. If I move the application to another XP
Pro machine it fails to write the file, so its not just an issue with one XP
Pro machine. The application also reads files from a shared folder, which it
has no problem doing on any of the machines. All requests to the application
are anonymous so the IUSR... account is being used.
Any idea why the application does not work when run on an XP PRO machine but
has no problems on the Win 2000 and 2003 servers?

- Windows XP >> system re-boots spontaneouslyOK. I've solved most of the problems but a few remain.
Primary: how/why did XP Pro re-boot my computer at the moment I clicked a
file that was on removable media?
Secondary: Why didn't system restore put my system back to what it was
before the problem? (I had to go back and re-establish several important
settings, including re-activating Quick Launch).
Tertiary, and separate: on a single-user computer, why is it necessary to go
to Windows Explorer and enter an Admin. password to be able to change
settings for the Explorer browser?
