Windows XP >> Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100% I have a Gateway 7422gx laptop. Recently, it started acting weird. The fan
would run faster than normal for 3-4 seconds and then the whole machine would
turn off. In addition, I noticed the CPU usage is at 100% even without any
apps running. Any ideas?

Windows XP >> Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100% Checked for viruses/spyware/adware ??

If you hit CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and bring up the Task Manager, you can go to the
processes tab and see what is consuming your CPU.

Windows XP >> Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100% Check the exhaust vents - make sure they aren't clogged up. Any
contaminates you should try to brush away ( Car Air Vent brush ).
Sounds like the unit is overheating and the BIOS thermal shutdown
threshold was reached. I would download and use SpeedFan to
keep a close eye on the Thermal conditions and fan speeds. Since
a notebook has only the single fan, if it fails the unit will overheat
fairly quickly. Most notebook users are aware of heat - just have
no readily available way to monitor it. SpeedFan found here:
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
**Don't be surprised when you find out what the CPU and Drive
temps are inside the notebook case. ~135-145 Degrees F.

Windows XP >> Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100% I installed SpeedFan. HD is ay 106F and Core is 104F.

What are normal readings? It is not in "fail" mode now with these temps.

Windows XP >> Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100% Those temps are fine. Most notebook hard drives are rated at up
135 Degrees-F and CPU limits vary. Most will enter a throttling
mode to try and self-regulate. If that fails then the BIOS control
may take over and shutdown the computer. It's quite normal for
both CPU/Drive and case sensor to abruptly rise whenever the
PC is performing intensive operations . When the workload goes
down (normal/quiescent) then temps will fail back pretty quickly.
Several things make notebooks hotter - sitting on a wood desk is
one thing that cause heat to build-up. A good/inexpensive solution
is a "Notebook Chiller" pad that gets power from a USB port. You
can pick them up at most Office Supply stores and Best Buy for
~$30 or under.

Windows XP >> Laptop shuts off and CPU Usage at 100% Thanks. I did notice a spike to 133F on the "core" reading. The fan was not
detected. Thanks again for your help.
