- Windows XP >> I'm unable to log onto windowsOne of the computers in my home network is not responding to the
administrator password for that particular pc.
I get the first " Log on to windows box " which asks for a user name and
password,
And thats about as far as it goes.
I don't know if one of the kids has changed the password or downloaded a
trojan thats changed the password or what.
My knowledge of computers extends as far as " its got a keyboard and a mouse!"
Any ideas please as i dont particularly want to re-install windows and lose

- Windows XP Security >> Open up remote admin ports without GPO?Hello, I have some problems with the GPO for opening up remote admin ports to
clients and since GPO-troubleshooting is rather timeconsuming I intended to
settle for a quick solution and instead use
"netsh firewall set service remoteadmin enable custom 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0
domain"
The problem is that I want to use this in a script and somehow the firewall
context menu disappears as soon as you enter the netsh remote mode.
Is it known why the firewall context mode disappears for remote computers
and is there a way to get around this?
Basically I need a simple way to toggle/show the firewall state for remote
computers without resorting to GPO's or login script so is this possible?
Thanks in advance!

I get the following error "The system cannot log you on due to the following
error: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted".
What is this referring to???

- Windows XP Basic >> Issues synchronizing time with time serversI've problems getting time synchronizing to work on my computer. I get an
error message "can't connect to time server" on both time.windows.com and
other time servers I've tried.
My system is a Windows Media Center, with XP service pack 2. I have a local
wireless network with a DSL gateway. My timezone and date are set correctly.
I have tried to turn off the gateway's firewall in addition to the Windows
firewall without luck.
Obviously it would be good to keep my computer on time for the TV guide and
recording features of the Media Center. :-(
Anyone have any clues to what I should try to make this work?

Unfortunately, I now can't run my older versions of Photoshop, Nero etc.
Being a Scotsman, I'm loathe to spend out on new applications when my old
ones do everything that I want them to. Question is, can I run my old 32 bit
version of XP pro on this machine and should I have the syetem configured to
dual boot or just wipe vista off and install XP?
Any advice please!

- Windows XP Setup >> Applications available to all usersHi
I have just installed xp and I am having problems making
programs available to all users.
I have made each member of the family a user of our pc
with the children being limited users.
When I install a program ( I am an administrator) it
doesn't seem to make the program available to the others.
Is there a way I can inform " XP " that I want the
program to be available for all ( or for that fact just
selected users)? I can't seem to find any info on this
part.
Thanks

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Disk DefragmenterI have installed the SP2 update and, so far, can no longer perform a disk
defragmentation.
When I run the program I get an error message stating:
MMC failed to initialize because it was installed incorrectly or because a
portion of the registry has become corrupted. Make sure the file Mmcndmgr.dll
is registered and running "regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\System32\mmcndmgr.dll".
I then go to Run and type:
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\System32\mmcndmgr.dll
And I receive another error message stating:
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\mmcndmgr.dll" is not an executable file and no
registration helper is re registered for this file type.
The mmcndmgr.dll file does exist in the System32 folder. Can anyone help me
fix this problem and get my Disk Defragmenter to work again? If it's a
registry problem, where in the registry would I fix it and how? Or how would
I go re-installing the program if thats even possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

- Windows XP Security >> Locked-Out Documents?I recently had to reinstall my copy of windows due to a
file corruption, but luckily enough my personal files
weren't deleted. However, although I log in with the same
account name and password and such (the profiles were not
saved) I cannot access my old files whatsoever. Is there
an administrator's utility that allows me to bypass this?
I do realize that the privacy option for one's documents
was created to prevent people from accessing them in the
first place, but I have crucial file for my workplace in
there!!

Can you send a pic of how it looks now. I am not sure
what the other person was telling you to do...but I don't
have a real option for the classic view...If I could see
what you have and what is different I could probably help
you.

Sorry...I got confused with someone else I was helping.
That advice should work...but send me a pic anyway and I
could be able to figure out what was going on...feel free
to send it directly to my email. You will get a quicker
response that way.

OK
You need to fix that
Info courtesy of http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_t.htm
Themes (Won't Load or only Windows Classic is listed)
Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services/Themes. Set to Automatic. Also
check your settings here:
Start/Administrative Tools/Services/Terminal Services/Log On. At the bottom
ensure that Hardware Profile Original Configuration is Enabled.
If the above doesn't apply/nor help: Only windows Classic is listed under
Appearance:
1. Right click on the desktop and choose Properties.
2. On the Theme tab, choose the Windows XP.
3. If this option is missing, you may choose Browse... to
C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\Luna.theme
4. The Luna.theme is the theme of the Windows XP.
If Luna.theme is missing: Go to Start/Run/Msconfig/Expand Files: Luna.MS_
and Luna.TH_

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> PC freeze during video captureWhen I use Windows Movie Maker to capture from my DV camcorder, the CPU is at
100 % and the fan is always working. Then, after approximately 5 minutes of
capture, my PC freeze and I have to reboot it. Then I see that a 39 MB video
file (.wmv) and a 468 MB .tmp file have been created.
I have a notebook 2.4 GHz with 512 MB of RAM. I have ordered a notebook
cooler but it will come in about 2 weeks.
I tried to capture my video with the Samsung software coming with my
camcorder, it worked, the CPU was low during the capture but the video
captured was of poor quality.
Can you help ?

I just retuned from my hols. and plugged in the mem. card to my laptop with

corrupted the files. On one of the softwares it says that the header files
are corrupted. All the data is there in the file, but for some reason the
headers have been either removed or corrupted. When I click on the
"properties" for the jpg files (the corrupted ones) there is no summary
information. Is it now impossible to recover the files?
Thank you.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Dual Monitors in 'clone' mode using two cardsHi
I'm trying to set up dual monitor cards to allow o/p to a
monitor @ 100Hz refresh and a seperate LCD projector @
85Hz.
I need to duplicate the desktop o/p on both screens. I've
tried Matrox Dualhead technology and that does not allow
different refresh rates on the two outputs despite their
claim that it does (confirmed from Matrox tech support).
I now have two seperate Nvidia GeForce4 MX cards (one AGP
one PCI). But I can only 'extend' the desktop to both
cards, I can't 'duplicate' the desktop to both cards.
Anyone any ideas please. Apart from using a laptop that
has this built in :o)

wanted to protect it so I tried using the advanced secutiry features in XP
Pro. I ended up blocking the "users" groups...which blocked me too. I was
told I need to use CACLS. I don't know what I should type. I went back to
the root by typing cd\ but do I need to do anything else because it is NOT
on the C: drive? The user I want to allow access is "Jared" an
administrative account. The files are on the E: drive. I don't know any
individual files names, just the folder name which is "RESTORE". If you need
any more info, let me know. I hope someone can help me. Thanks!

AOLTechLES: Regarding your concern, in order to
