- Windows XP Hardware >> Re: Erratic data entry after install MS Wireless Optical Mouse 2After uneventful installation of the mouse on my laptop, the mouse
works fine, but data entry is now screwed up. E.g. typing this note, the
data entry cursor will occasionally jump to a new place of its own
accord as I type. The new location may be in a different input area or
the same, usually within already-typed text.
This is a new problem, never encountered before installing this mouse.
_______
DETAILS:
* Compaq Presario notebook R3150US (P-IV 2.8 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD).
* Mouse plugged in USB port; Batteries: good; signal: high.
* No other wireless devices.
* Windows-XP Home (SP-1, fully patched & updated).
* NAV updated weekly; SpyBot sweep weekly; ZoneAlarm in place.
* Reinstalled w/mouse software (IntelliPoint 5.0) from MS page.
* Cursor jump always coincident with a data key depression, never when
not typing. Not associated with particular keys as far as I can tell.
* Problem doesn't seem to be associated with particular applications,
but may be worse with this email client (Netscape 7.1) which, for
newsgroup composition, automatically wraps message text at 72 characters.
* I am not a power typist, so too-fast typing is not an issue.
I noticed that that place where the data entry cursor jumps is
related to the location of the mouse pointer, even to another open
window, which is then given focus. I tried setting the mouse option to
hide the pointer while typing, but that seems to have NO EFFECT -- the
pointer is not hidden and focus still follows the pointer. I have
learned to keep the pointer on my desktop to avoid data entry where I
don't want it, but it is still a major annoyance to have to restore
focus to the place where I was typing.
Further observation: The hide pointer option is SOMETIMES working, but
only if the pointer is within the window being typed upon. This seems to
be application dependent -- works in WORDPAD, but not in Netscape email
client.
IAC, hiding the pointer doesn't prevent input cursor jumping, so is a
separate, unrelated problem.
How can I cure this nasty behavior?
Has anyone else seen this problem?

- Windows XP Network >> Mapping in XP Home VersionI have several computers (4) that I network in a small
office. When I trying mapping a directory on each
computer, every time you reboot, network connection for
that mapping fails and the login process and password has
to be redone. In the help file, it states there is an
option to "save password" on the login display. It does
not show. Am I missing something?

- Windows XP >> problems with floppy drive and XP HomeI saved several files on 3.5" floppy disks (brand new,
formatted for Windows 2000/XP). I formatted each disk
before use, in case there were any problems with them out
of the box and copied my files onto them just fine. Now
that I've completed my restore I am in the process of
copying those files back onto the HDD. The problem is
that the first file on each disk (no matter what order
they are listed in; alphabetically, date modified, etc.)
will NOT copy or move over. I get two different errors,
that seem to vary from disk to disk. The first one reads
as "Error reading from specified file or disk". The
second error reads as "Cannot copy/move <filename>. Data
error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)". To be honest, this
happens no matter what floppy disk I use on this XP
machine. And yes, I have tried several 3.5" drives, but
to no avail. The only floppy disks that XP seems to read
are FAT16 and FAT32 formatted disks, and only then if said
disks were formatted on a Windows 3.1 or Windows 95
machine. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> IE7 and AOLThank you for reviewing this post. I know, I know, AOL is normally personal
non grata around these parts, but it is germain to my question.
I have a neighbor who has a nice new Dell machine and has updated to IE7 as
soon as the machine came out of the box. IE7 and Firefox both work just
fine. However, and I cannot explain why, he likes to use AOL to surf the net
(familiarity, I believe). He says that when he gets on AOL it is
excruciatingly slow. I have changed his IE settings for him as per other
posts in this area about checking for page updates and reducing disk space
for TIF to 150M versus default of 250M. This did not change the slowness of
AOL.
What might be causing this and how might I help him solve it short of
telling him to ditch the AOL, which is not a viable solution at this point?
Thank you so very much for your time and response(s).
Kindest regards,

- Windows XP >> Data WiperHello,
I have a PC in full working order, full admin access, OS is XP Home.
There are lots of programmes on the hard drive none of which I have the
software for this includes the OS.
Before returning this PC, I have been asked to get rid of some very
sensitive material held in files, correspondence and so on, ( not porn ),
that if in the wrong hands would stir up old wounds which are slowly healing
Of course the simplest way would be to physically destroy the existing HD
and replace it, in this instance I can't to this.
I spent last night using the dustbin and Norton deleting files, wiped
restore points and so on, however I know these files or a lot of them are
still lurking on the HD and could be retrieved.
Question,
WITHOUT wiping the HD or reformatting it is there some freebie software I
can download that will go some way in overwriting the files I have deleted
thus making it that more difficult to retrieve any files I have deleted?
PLEASE REMEMBER, I cannot wipe, destroy or reformat the existing HD.
Finally, there is a programme installed on the HD called Billminder, a
simple programme to remind one of upcoming bills to pay, this programme has
been password protected, is there a place in XP, ( the registry ), where I
might look for passwords, if there is could someone tell me how I get to
this, I also ask the same question for and E-mail account?

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click in the Settings
button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the Startup
and Recovery window click on the checkbox for "Automatically restart"
to clear it then click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.
That should put an end to the spontaneous reboots. However they may
be replaced by a Blue Screen Of Death STOP error message. If this
does happen then the contents of the STOP message, including the STOP
code, all 4 parameters, and any file or module names mentioned will be
a direct clue as to the underlying cause of the error. Post that
information back here if you need assistance with this.
Good luck

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> rebooting for no reason
Hello Matrix,
Can you tell me when does the reboot happens ?
Is it while computer is starting or is it doing that when you/your
friend is at desktop ?
Does that happen while using a particular application ?
Does it come with any errors before the computer shuts down ?
If you can answer above mentioned questions, I can give you Sure Shot
answer which can definately resolve the reboot issue.
Thanks & Regards,

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> rebooting for no reason
Matrix,
What you describe does seem to point toward the power supply. I had
the same issue, except my power supply was a pretty good one. But I
added too many drives and it would make a click noise that sounded like
it wanted to turn off, so as to warn me.
I found two things. My 500W pwr sup was powering 2 optical drives,
zipDrive, floppy and 4 Hard drives, not to mention the Mobo with one
12V rail. Also there was a massive heat building up in the case. My
solution for now was, I disconnected 2 Hd drives and mounted a 8" fan
on the inside of the rear back panel of the desk unit (where my PC is
encased).
The clicking stopped and all was normal again. Of course I bought a
new REXUS 500W Pwr sup but with 2 12V rails, faster cooling, silent
power and better ventilation due to its larger built in fan. However,
your friends problem is with hardware. My advise, don't waste time on
checking the power sup, just buy a good one. Read up on them first.
I am running WINXP on a Asus Intel 2.4G Mobo.

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> rebooting for no reason
Matrix,
I had the same problem at my PC, I found that when I press "\" key then
it shutdowns/reboots. Hardware was ok, PS was in good condition, PC was
not heating up....... Thanks God, finally I get rid of this problem
last night and found a number of spyware/malware in it. I use "Prevx1"
software to fix the problem. Prevx1 trial version gives you one month
period to detect and clean all kind of spyware/malware.....after expiry
of one month trial period...it will only detect and informs you about
problems. At least trial version can help you to fix your problem for
the moment.
give it a try......good luck

Windows XP Perform Maintain >> rebooting for no reason
Hi, just had same problem, so I backtracked and remembered, my pc (winxphome
sp2) was working ok, downloaded "trojan hunter-free trial", for a look-see,
and sometime later, pc began to shutdown / reboot (stop note, driver problem)
without my prompt, so I removed "trojan hunter" and now pc runs ok. So your
problem may be the last program you downloaded before problem began,
conflicting with another program, or it may have a driver that your pc will
not accept and it closes down to protect itself. After removal through
"add-remove" I did a complete clear out with "ccleaner" - "cleanup" -
"regscrubxp", now all ok, no problems. I also run, kaspersky AV 6.0,
ad-aware, advanced spyware, spybot, windows defender, spyware blaster,
mailwasher, microsoft baseline security, startup inspector, HDD health,
connection keeper, and win-patrol-scotty, plus microsoft/windows
auto-updates.
Apart from my AV, all the rest are FREE DOWNLOADS.
Look upon your PC investment as a castle under siege and put a "ring defence
around it!"

- Windows XP Network >> Accessing shared folder on XP Pro machine from XP Home machineHi, I'm having trouble getting from Home to shared folders on XP - I can't
see the computer under the "view workgroup computers" but I can access it via
typing in the IP address under Run. My main issue is setting up security so
that only certain users can, from across the network, get to certain shared
folders. I've setup the usernames and passwords, and limited the shared
folders to those certain users, but when I try to access them remotely, I
don't get a prompt to enter in a username and password, and I'm just denied
access outright. How can I cure this?

If it was a mistake, why doesn't Microsoft issue a fix? Or, is there a fix?
Thanks...jb

- Windows XP >> Offline foldersHi,
There are a couple of folders which i have setup as offline to enable me to
take the files on my laptop when i go home.
But i find some files not included in the offline content. Particularly
Access (.mdb) files and some accounting files (.500) files which are
important in my work.
Is there any way to include these files also in the offline files
synchronised?
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> Did ECS K8M800M2's onboard network die?Recently, I was using the computer and surfing on the Web. Then, all the
sudden Windows XP Professional SP2 (all updates) said network cable was
unplugged. I checked the CAT5 ethernet/network cable cable, and it was
fine. I tried another cable, and the onboard network didn't detect it
either. I checked both cables on my old Apple PowerBook G4, and they had
no problems.
I even tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and upgrading the VIA VT823x
PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (from Windows Update). Also, reinstalled VIA
4in1 Hyperion driver. None of them helped or changed anything that I
noticed.
Does this sound like the onboard network died? :( I am currently using
wireless USB network which isn't very stable and slow. Thank you in advance
