- Windows XP Security >> The System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.I set security on all of our Win XP SP1 systems some time
ago and whenever I need to install MS Office I rename the
folder GroupPolicy to GroupPolicy.old, reboot and install
the program. On one system I'm getting this message "The
System Administrator has set policies to prevent this
installation." no matter what I try. I have no idea what
I might have done differently with this computer. I have
tried using secedit to reset security but that didn't
help. Any ideas?

This has windows xp home edition installed on it. When I boot up my new

the same thing happens.

- Windows XP Network >> One computer connects to the internet, the other does not???Hi,
We have two laptops at home. We share a DSL connection
through a switch. However, one laptop always connects to
the internet, and the other one sometimes connects and
sometimes doesn't when we turn them on.
In both computers LAN connection seems to be connected.
The difference is that, in one computer's LAN conncetion
properties, TCP/IP is assigned by DHCP, and this computer
can connect to the internet; in the other computer TCP/IP
is assigned as automatic IP address, and this one cannot
access the internet.
What can the problem be? Please help us!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Archos Mini HD and Unknown Device on USB 2.0 and XP HomeHi,
I just bought a new Toshiba Satellite A40-231 with XP Home. I have an
external Archos Mini HD (40 GB) that has USB 2.0. For some reason,
when I connect the HD to the laptop, I get a message stating that
there has been a failure and an unknown device is connected. I have
tried re-installing the drivers for the Archos but to no avail.
Further, I have been able to use various memory sticks on the machine
with no problems. Additionally, the MiniHD works fine on other
machines (the other machines however had only USB 1.1 ports). I cannot
figure out however why the Mini HD does not appear on my new machine
and I would appreciate any advice in this matter as it is quite
frustrating.
Many thanks, Jules

- Windows XP >> Automatic Updates/ MouseRecently, whenever I install an Automatic Update my mouse
stops working in the USB port. I am able to use a mouse
in the other port. I know this because I used my mouse
from work to troubleshoot. I suspect that the computer
sees it as a game controller because it "finds" a game
controller and installs it. I am able to do a "System
Restore" and get my mouse back but I would like to be
able to use the Updates.
Has anyone run into this problem and is there a fix? Are
the Automatic Updates really that useful? I appreciate
any help.

Windows XP Network >> Can't access folder in user account over network
I have a small home network of 3 PCs running Windows XP Home edn. One
PC (the kids) is configured with two user accounts, one specifically for
my kids (which is a 'limited' one) and my own (which is an administrator
account).
Up till now I have been able to share resources and folders between the
PCs perfectly OK, but after a reformat and Windows reinstall on the kids
PC, I am unable to access folders within the limited account from the
other computers.
I have enabled sharing of "My Documents" in both user accounts on the
kids PC.
I can see the kids PC on the network from my own PC, and can see the two
folders which I have enabled for sharing. I have RW access over the
network to "My Documents" in the admin account, and to the "Shared
Documents" folder; however when I try to open "My Documents" in the
limited account I get:
"\\KIDS_PC\My Documents is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of
this server to find out if you have permissions. Access is denied"
Finally, I've tried changing the kid's limited account into a full
administrator account. Guess what - makes no difference! I have checked
all the Properties/Sharing tabs for both user accounts and they are
identical AFAICS. Just that one can be accessed, the other can't!
BTW I am running Windows Firewall on both machines, both configured to
enable LAN access.
Please help - this is driving me nuts!
Thanks
David

David,
With Windows XP Home, and Simple File Sharing, all network access is
authenticated as Guest, which is a non-administrative account.
Make sure that the Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest,
with Start - Run - "cmd", then type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command
window. Ensure that the password for Guest is blank, with Start - Run -
"control userpasswords2"; select Guest, click Reset Password, click OK without
entering a new password.
Remember, with Simple File Sharing, you'll not be able to access "C:\Program
Files", "C:\Windows", or any of the profile related folders such as "My
Documents". All of those folders require individual user, or administrator
access, and Guest access gives you neither.

But I'm trying to connect *from* a PC where I do have admin access, so
surely that should work? Certainly I can connect fine to our 3rd PC in
this way. And also, as I mentioned I temporarily set the "Kids" user
account to "Administrator", but that makes no difference either!
Thanks

David,
With XP Home and Simple File Sharing, network access is authenticated (granted)
to the Guest account only. Regardless of the access you have on the client,
server access will be as Guest and no more. And Guest has to be active, and
have matching (or no) password on both client and server.

I'm still struggling with this big time.
I've enabled the Guest account on both PCs (although I never used to
have them active).
I can access \\KIDS_PC\My Documents fine for the account "Admin", but
not in the account "Kids" (that one gives me the Access Denied error).
Since I changed the account type, the "Kids" account is a Computer
Administrator as well as the "Admin" one. There is no difference between
them! Yet I can access the My Documents folder in "Admin" over the
network, but not "Kids".
I've just tried setting the server root directory as a share.
So now I can access:
C:\
C:\Documents and Settings\
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin
C:\Documents and Settings\Admins Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\Guest
C:\Documents and Settings\Guest's Documents
BUT NOT:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kids

David,
With XP Home, you can temporarily disable Simple File Sharing by starting up in
"Safe Mode with Networking".
A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=315222
With Simple File Sharing disabled, right click the desired folder, click Sharing
and Security, and share the folder. Then, click the Permissions button to
specify network access permissions, and click the Security tab to specify NTFS
file system permissions. A network user needs both permissions in order to
access the share.
For details how to set permissions:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm
Compare permissions in the Admin and Kids folders.

Woohoo! Unbelievably (!) it now works!
I checked under the Security tab in both folders, and found a user called
"Everyone" in the permissions table under the Admin folder; but this was not
present under the Kids folder. So I created a new user "Everyone", gave him
full r/w access, and rebooted in Normal Mode; and all is now fine. Does
this make sense, as a solution?!
I'm naturally extremely grateful to you, Chuck - I wouldn't have been able
to sort this out myself in a million years. But what on earth's going on?
How did Microsoft expect me, as a mere mortal, non-networking expert ever to
get my PC networked properly, having to delve so deep into Windows? Had
something in my setup become corrupted, and I've put it right now?
Thanks again

David,
That's great news! That absolutely makes sense, and it's good to confirm the
effectiveness of the Safe Mode - SFS disabling procedure etc. Thanks for the
feedback!
You ask a good question too. I went thru an experience like yours, and this is
where I got help. Read my blog article:

I printed this post, and your web pages, and stepped through my system in the hope of correcting whatever I had previously done wrongly. However it made no difference. (I wrote down in sequence every icon, menu, tab, list and button that I clicked, but I won't reproduce it here unless you ask)
My task is to:-
Create a limited user on each of the peers
Create a directory on each of the peers
Share the directory among each of the peers
Permit limited user on any peer to access shared directory on any peer
I previously attempted this by running the following batch file on each peer:-
net user student /add /passwordreq:no /passwordchg:no /active:yes
md c:\netfolder
net share netfolder=c:\netfolder /unlimited
cacls c:\netfolder /t /e /g student:c
Using mouse clicks or using commands, the share works for Administrative users but not Limited users. Am I doing something wrong, or is XP Home SP1 not able to deliver what I want?
Thanks,

John,
I'm not really sure what you did wrong, if anything.
But asking for help, at the end of another, un related thread is probably not
the best way to start asking for help. For several reasons.
Please start a new thread, with a unique and descriptive subject, describing
your problem, and your environment, and relevant detail about each. With a new
thread, everybody here will be more likely to be able to contribute effectively
to solving your problem. It's in you own interest to do this.

- Windows XP >> upgraded from me. outlook express brokenI upgratded from ME to XP. everything was fine. AT&T sold
out to comcast. used there wizard to update email
automatically.
Note: when Mediaone switched to AT&T. There was no
problem.
Now I getting email is hit and miss. Getting an time out
on the connection. It is not connection. to
mail.comcast.net. I deleted outlook express and
reinstalled. That did not fix the problem.
So I am guessing there is a setting that has not been
changed to comcast.net. That the wizard did not change.
Any ideas on what I need to change? Where to change it?

- Windows XP Support >> mouse locking up when bootingI have been working on this problem all day long. When booting computer, the
mouse cursor is frozen in center of screen. if i hit ctrl-alt-del and hold
for at least 2 seconds then the mouse starts working. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled drivers. The mouse is a Logitech M-SBF69. I have checked
irq's and there are no conflicts. This problem started out of the blue. I
have done scans with ad-aware, spybot and come up with nothing.

Corrupt File Exception Processing Message c0000102 Parameters 75b6bf9c

error in the bottom left hand corner with a yellow cautionary symbol The pc
is running windows xp professional. The pc had hard drive issues and was
unable to boot windows, but we used spinrite(which is a hard drive utitliy
that fixes bad sectors on the hard drive). When we ran the utility we were
able to boot into windows, but this error message started to occur. Does
anyone know what this error message means and what it pertains too? Thank You

- Windows XP Support >> auto-login issueI just upgraded from Windows2000 to WindowsXP. Somehow in my Win2000 build, I
had it set to automatically log me in. When I upgraded to XP, those settings
came over and its giving me a problem.
I dont remember what that password is which was set in Win2000. In my new XP
build, I deleted my password for this account, and I updated the settings to
bypass the welcome screen as well, yet whenever I turn the pc on, it tries to
auto-login from those old Win2k settings... and the password doesnt match so
I get an error.
Then after hitting ok on the error, I can login just fine.
How do i fix this?

- Windows XP Support >> stack overflow in line 0My OS is windows XP home using Explorer 7, over the last couple of weeks I
have been consistantly receiving the above message when using IE, this often
happens when attempting the first search, which is then followed by a lenthy
time of idleness (hourglass displayed) and always ends up with the "stack
overflow message" any assitance would be appreciated.

- Windows XP >> XP screensaverNone of the users on our computer have turned a screensaver on yet the
default XP screensaver comes on after logging off. Is there anyway of
changing the default screensaver to a different saver? We are fine with a
screensaver coming on after logging off (thats all we want) and do not want
to have to turn on a screensaver for each desktop.

- Windows XP Support >> unreadable spanned dynamic diskHi,
short description: I got an unreadable dynamic disk with one volume spanned.
configuration:
MB: gigabyte 8IG1000 Pro (Rev. 1.2)
CPU: intel p4 2.4 HT, 800 MHz FSB
HDD: Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9, 80GB ATA, 7200rpm, 6Y080L0
Maxtor DiamondMaz Plus 9, 80GB SATA, 7200rpm, 6Y080M0
OS: previous: Windows XP SP2 Embedded
new: Windows XP Professional SP1 + SP2 Update
HDD configuration: (both converted from basic to dynamic)
disk 0 (ATA): C: 19 GB [new windows installation volume - boot]
D: 19 GB
--: 9.9 GB [spanned volume H]
E: 9.54 GB
F: 19 GB
--: 8MB [reserved space] [added to H spanned volume]
disk 1 (SATA): G: 9.9 GB [previous windows installation volume - system]
H: 33.5 GB + 10 GB = 43.5 GB [spanned volume H]
I: 33.45 GB
problem: disk 1 is unreadable. the windows installation does not start + I
cannot read the error message number witch appears in a blue screen and it
cannot be started in safe mode or best known hardware configuration. disk 1
cannot be reactivated.
the things I know:
1. disk 1 is of no hardware failure (Maxtor PowerMax)
2. disk 1 is of no I/O or Cable erorr (Maxtor PowerMax)
3. disk 1 in detected in BIOS.
4. disk 1 controller is working. it is hot and vibrating.
5. all volumes are dynamic. 0x42 in MBR (diskmap.exe)
6. MBR seems to be fine, I think I'm not sure!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
background:
after waking my computer up from screen saver and trying to minimize an
internet explorer, everything froze. I restarted it by reset switch, and an
"NTLDR missing" message came. I started windows by recovery console and I was
able to log on to my windows installation (I did nothing, because i have
forgotten how to replace NTLDR!). I checked the connection IDE cable to my
primary ATA hard drive (disk 0) and the message didn't appear again. Windows
started and just before displaying welcome screen "the blue crash screen"
came up and computer restarted automatically. I was not able to read the
error message because I saw the blue screen just as a splash! I tried
recovery console again and it did not recognize my windows installation. then
i tried to install windows again. there were 4 drive available.
"C:" 19.00GB
"D:" 47.54GB (seems they are on disk 0)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"-:(dynamic volume)" 9.9GB
"-:(dynamic volume)" 71.1GB (seems they are on disk 1)
I decided to install windows on "C:". after installation it does not
recognize disk 1 volumes. they are available via "disk management console"
and disk 1 is labled unreadable and there is another "missing" disk (M0, I
think) with my lost volumes (they are displayed from disk configuration
database of disk 0). I'm not able to reactivate disk 1. I used Maxtor
PowerMax and everything was fine. I tried to connect disk 1 to SATA_02
inteface and remap it through BIOS to display it as SATA_01, but it didn't
work. diskmap.exe says all my volume are dynamic (no problem).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
what I need: I need to get back my volumes all with the data contained, esp.
that spanned volume [H]. If my previous windows insatallation could come back
to work it is the best.
thank you so much for help!

- Windows XP >> Download managerI'm unable to download anything from the Internet at the
moment. For some time now I've had this problem. I've
already run Adaware and have Norton 2004. Neither have
come up with any spyware or viruses. I have come to the
assumption that I'm missing the Download Manager. My
questions are; has anyone heard of these symptoms before
and is there anywhere to get a Windows Download Manager
for a WinXP workstation?
Please help,

- Windows XP Setup >> Unable to format my hard drive in installI am trying to reinstall Windows Xp because of a few
problems i've been having. I load the CD into my drive
and start the installation. When it asks what partition I
wish to install it on, I try to delete the partition, but
it won't allow me to because of system files that are on
there that is necessary to installation.

- Windows XP Support >> AHH! Continous reboot loop!I'm very concerned about my laptop right now, I desperately need it for
studying and it has alot of stuff on it that isn't backed up (I've
definately learned my lesson!).
For a while, every know and then it would go blue screen and reboot for
no apparent reason. It's so quick that I can't actually make out what
it's saying before it reboots. When it reloads it said it had recovered
from a serious error. I didn't really think much of it.
The other day I started it up and a message popped up saying something
along the lines of an error with MSN Messenger, before I could read it
properly the blue screen flashed up and it had rebooted. It then gave
me a few choices of how I wanted to start the computer up, I chose
normal and as soon as the windows xp loading screen appeared the screen
went blue and restarted again! It loaded up the the same screen and I
tried to load in safe mode and it did the same thing. I've tried it
several times since then but with no luck.
I'm totally lost for answers right now. If I can't actually get on to
Windows, how can I actually fix the problem? I'm a student and I rely
on my laptop alot, I'd love to be able to restore everything on it but
as long as I can fix it i'll be happy.
Does anyone have any explanation or possible a remedy for this problem?
I'm relcutant to go through Microsoft because the support pages are
written like I'm some kind of expert and they'll squeeze all the money
they can out of me if I go for one-to-one support.
Thank!
