- Windows XP >> Trouble with cut and paste or copy and pasteI have Windows XP and the standard suite of Microsoft Office products. I
have had no trouble with my system until today. Any text I highlight and try
to cut and paste or copy and paste will not allow the operation to complete.
I can highlight the text fine, but when I go to the document I want to move
it to (or within the same document), the "Paste" function remains gray and
will not complete the copy, cut or paste operation. This problem is for all
text, be it in a MS Word document or if it is text on a website.
I have the latest virus protection and ran a deep scan just to make sure I
did not pick up a virus. My system is clean.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Thanks

- Windows XP Setup >> Can I Do This?I am currently running 98 SE. Every week I clone my HDD to an identical
HDD in an external case which converts IDE to USB. When I get into serious
trouble, I just swap drives.
I plan to format the internal HDD and do a clean install of XP Home SP2,
not an upgrade install. Completely clean with only the HDD and the CD-ROM
connected.
I would then like to "import" (?) programs and settings from the external
drive in order to save me the trouble of reinstalling programs. The
external HDD will run under XP without drivers.
Can I do this?

- Windows XP Network >> switching to/from battery kills WiFiHi, all:
On my XP laptop, when I switch from AC power to battery, the WiFi network
connection dies and gets replaced by the 169... null IP address. I must
manually disconnect and reconnect to restore a true IP.
Does anyone know of a way to either stop this happening, or automate this
release/renew process?
Thank you,

Windows XP Network >> Virtual Private Networks between friends!
Some friends and I have broadband internet connections at
our homes, and are looking for a way to connect our pcs
together over the internet for file sharing.
As far as I can tell, VPN seems to be the best way to do
this, I can set my pc up to allow incoming connections,
but cannot figure out how to make a connection.
If anyone has any suggestions they would be much
appreciated.

Windows XP Network >> Virtual Private Networks between friends!
quoted form http://www.ChicagoTech.net
Summary
Virtual Private Networks (VPN) allow users working at home, on the road or
at a branch office to connect in a secure manner to a remote corporate
server using the public Internet. VPN server or host is a computer that
accepts VPN connections from VPN clients. A VPN server or host can be a
NT/W2K server or W2K/XP Pro. VPN client is a computer that initiates a VPN
connection to a VPN server or host. A VPN client can be an individual
computer running MS Windows NT version 4.0, Windows 2000, 9x. VPN clients
can also be any non-Microsoft Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
client or Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) client using IPSec.
Basic VPN Requirement
a.. User Permission. Enable a user to access the VPN. To do this, go to AD
Users and Computers, select the user who need to access the VPN, click
Dial-in. Check Allow access on the Remote Access Permission (Dial-in or
VPN).
b.. IP Configuration. The VPN server should have a static IP address and
assign the arrange IP addresses to VPN clients. The VPN server must also be
configured with DNS and WINS server addresses to assign to the VPN client
during the connection.
c.. Data Encryption. Data carried on the public network should be rendered
unreadable to unauthorized clients on the network.
d.. Protocol Support. The TCP/IP is common protocols used in the public
network. The VPN also include IP, Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX),
NetBEUI and so on.
e.. Firewall Ports. When you place a VPN server behind your firewall, be
sure to enable IP protocol 47 (GRE) and TCP port 1723.
f.. Interface(s) for VPN server. If your network doesn't have a router or
the VPN is also a gateway, your computer must have at least two interfaces,
one connecting to the Internet and another connecting to the LAN.
g.. One interface for VPN client. The interface can be a dial-in modem, or
a dedicated connection to the Internet.

Windows XP Network >> Virtual Private Networks between friends!
Hi.. The question is:
Me and a friend want to connect our seperated domains ( win2003 ) together by means of VPN. However, i am not intressted in making all my other computers depended of Internet access through the VPN server, just the AD server 2 AD server.
As I can see from MS examples they always put the VPN server on the outside ( externaly ) / directly connected to the internet. Have not seen an example of where the VPN server is protected by NAT / router and where MS have used port forwarding to reach the backend VPN partner! Must the VPN servers WAN interface have a public IP? Is there some way to work around the public IP criteria?
And lastly, which ports does the VPN server use for communication? To be able to make use of port forwarding?

- Windows XP >> Reproducible Explorer memory leakSteps to reproduce:
* Reboot
* Open an Explorer window
* Navigate to a directory with around 1500 image files, set to
thumbnail view
* Navigate around, returning to that directory a few times
* Observe Explorer process size (VM size in Task Manager) bloat to
several hundred meg
* Observe that closing all open Explorer windows doesn't return the
process to its original,
20-odd-meg size.

- Windows XP Security >> [LONG] Weird problem, hijack logfile includedHi everyone, i'm having a strange problem with my gf pc, it had some
spywares that i removed (in safe mode, with the tools below) but it
still freezes when uploading stuff to the internet (over isdn) and
windows networking starts doing weird things, it becomes unable to
disconnect from the internet, the connection stuff freezes or doesnt
opens, if i delete Winsock/Winsock2 keys in the registry and then i
reinstall tcp/ip it works, but after a reboot it does the same thing again.
The freeze during upload happens only on the isdn connection, the lan
connection works well, but the ethernet card was installed after the
problem, when i get this pc at my home.
I removed all the bad stuff that was at boot (in safe mode), i'm running
avast adaware adwatch spybot, cwsshredder, hijackthis and microsoft
antispybot, and i even tried the utility winsockxpfix & lspfix (without
finding anything suspect) but the problem is still here

- Windows XP Setup >> WinXP and laserjet 4 drivers...a challenge..I have an issue with WinXP Pro sp1 and HP laserjet 4 drivers. On a netware
network i just removed the print queues an implemented iPrint.
When I remove the old printer from a WinXP workstation, and I install the
laserjet 4 from iPrint, which copies down LJ4 drivers to the workstation, I
cannot print to the printer. Or rather is can, but I get nothing but junk
out, sometimes blank pages, sometimes no text, but I'll always get images
out. A test page prints out only the Windows logo.
The reason I am posting here, if I take a WinXP pro workstation that has
never had a laserjet 4 installed on it, and install one of the "new"
printers, it works flawlessly.
I'm thinking there is something wrong not necessarily with the driver, but
maybe the file copy process. Incedentally, I've tried this with LJ4 drivers
that I've downloaded from HP, the ones built into XP, and ones copied from a
server at another location where iPrint works properly, and I always get the
same result. Previous install of LJ4 on machine, does not work. Clean
install of LJ4 drivers, and it does work.
Is there a way to completely remove the driver, i mean totally remove, not
just deleting the inf file?
Thanks for any help anyone could lend in...

day, and I haven't been able to find a fix.
I am running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Invision laptop. In the

Keyboard and Mouse. The launching happens while I am typing -
expecially if I am typing information into a dialog box. The first

when I use the shift key and the backspace (but not only during these
operations - these are just the ones I've noticed specifically).
I have checked to make sure that Help and Support is in Manual Launch
mode, which it is. I have even tried to disable it entirely, but then I
just get an error message when it wants to launch. I have also
downloaded fixes that were supposed to work, but nothing makes any
difference.
