I purchased a Packard Bell "imedia" PC from PC World UK in about 2002. AMD
1.3Ghz. 20Gb C: drive with Windows XP home edition (OEM I assume) (SP2) and
a 40Gb D: drive added by myself a couple of years ago.
Ok, the C: drive starts reporting bad sectors and is on the way out. So I
purchased a replacement hard drive (Same manufacturer WD) 80 Gb. Then comes
the problem of transferring the OS to the new drive.
I don't have the original OEM XP disks (thanks PC world).
The new drive was installed (as a slave on IDE 2), formatted and partitioned
(NTFS) and set as drive E:
I first tried using NTBackup to backup the C drive (to the D drive), then
restoring this to E: However, NT Backup did not seem to backup and restore
every file (It missed several in the Windows\System32\Config folder). But
some hacking about with the recovery console (from an XP Home CD, not OEM) I
got these transferred across.
When I swap cables and jumpers to replace the C: drive with the E: drive, I
can get XP to display the boot.ini menu, and it will start loading the OS
Kernel, HAL and boot services. But it gets to MUP.SYS and just halts.
Having read some chat on similar problems, it seems that I shouldn't blame
MUP.SYS, it might be the next thing that loads. Trouble is, even with the
/sos switch, nothing else is displayed. Have tried safe mode etc.
I don't know if this is because the new drive/partition is labelled as E: ?
Anybody got any suggestions short of reinstalling XP and all the Apps? I
could obtain an OEM disk if absolutely necessary, but I feel frustrated that
something as common as replacing a failing system disk should prove so
painful.
Before anyone suggests using a drive image application, the C: drive seems
to have a 2Mb "unknown" partition at the start - preventing any simple
partition copy from working. I assume this is part of some
PCWorld/OEM/Microsoft anti piracy thing. Which I'm all in favour of, until
it stops me legitimately rescuing my failing system

- Windows XP >> Trying to copy XP to bigger Hard DriveHave been unsuccesful the last two days trying to copy my 20 GB XP system to
a brand new 80GB HD. I have used the Mfg disk (Maxtor) to format and copy
to new disk. Format was OK, showed 81GB. Did the file copy but system does
not boot. NTLDR is missing error which prompts you to insert OS disk and
install. I want to avoid a new install and just copy existing system. I
then tried Disk Image 7.0, did the copy, same error NTLDR is missing. Disk
Image has a copy MBR selection which I did, same result. Back in the DOS
days you could format C: /s or do a Sys C: but I thought I should be able to
get past this. What am I missing here??? Tx Mike

- Windows XP >> Reading DriveSpace compressed drives in Windows XPI have the following problem:
I have an old hard disk which was used with Windows 98. I managed to get the
raw data from it. But... the drive was compressed with DriveSpace3 and so I
now only have a huge drvspace.000 file and can't get the data out of it as I
do not have a Windows 98 installation any more.
Does anyone know a program or another way to get the data?
(I'm using Windows XP Professional now.)

- Windows XP >> Uninstall Brightmail plugin silently with msiexec doesnt work?I've tried using this format to remove this program..
msiexec /x "{GUID HERE}" /quiet
This doesnt work..
If you take off the /quiet.. it pops up asking if you want to
uninstall the plugin..
If you put the /quiet on.. it will briefly show that pop up window
then disappear, but the app isnt uninstalled...
I really need a way to remove this app from multiple computers (using
sms 2003) with this command line, so users aren't prompted or see
anything related to it...
Any thoughts out there?

- Windows XP >> My system is crashing ever 5 minutes LITERALLY!When i boot my computer up, it crashes after 5 minutes.
The error i'm getting is:
System Shutdown
Must shutdown because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) was
terminated unexpectedly.
Something like that.
Anyone know what I can do to solve this problem other than
reformatting?

- Windows XP >> Some Applications start MinimizedFor some unknown reason several applications have begun to start running
minimized which can not be maximized no mater what I do. Others are now
opening fully maximized and will not be resized and if I try they go right
to the tray. I am using two monitors which I like use to each for different
applications. Many of my apps work fine as they always have and only some
are behaving as described.
I located this fix http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips512.html but it
does not give accurate information about what to do. The article indicated
this START /MAX notepad.exe as an example but an error report is shown.
I don't even understand this if it is the fix I am looking for
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178117 If this is what I need to do then it
seems it is a bit over my head but will give it a try unless there is
someone that knows of an easier solution.

- Windows XP Hardware >> only burn 3 songs-why?-helpCan anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Each time I've burned a CD, it only lets me record
3 songs. When I try to record the 4th song, I get a
message from Windows Media Player saying "will not fit"
I don't understand why I'm only able to record 12 minutes
of music when the disc says 80min. (Imation disc that
came with computer)
Any help appreciated-

- Windows XP >> disappearing system trayThe volume and power icons in my system tray disappear
every time i boot up. i have to reclick the "place icon
in system tray" for either one of them and both of htem
then show up. How do i fix this problem?
beyond that, microsoft outlook takes forever to boot up.
i don't have many messages on it, but it still takes a
long time. i defragged my hard drive, thinking that
perhaps files got fragmented. what do it do? this
problem just started happening.

- Windows XP Setup >> RIS: Using Wake on Lan, Completely auto. install?We are using RIS (Remote Installation Services) to deploy Windows XP SP2
incl. applications and settings to about 300 PC's used by students.
Is it possible to completely automate this procedure to reinstall all our
domain computers every knight.
Use WOL to startup all computers, change the .ROM file to .F12 to
automaticly start RIS. But then??
Is this at all possible?

- Windows XP Hardware >> All my cards aren't workingI just got finished w/ a technical support guy who told me
to take all of my various cards out of their slots (video,
sound, network, etc.) and then I had to put them back in.
I'm not sure if they were supposed to go back in in the
same order, but my sound and network cards won't work
now. Can someone tell me if they had to go back in in the
same order that they came out? Thanks a million

Well, i've just experienced the same problem with error 0x80248013.
I'm glad there's a newsgroup here, or else i wouldn't know what to do.
I think it's best to just wait a few more hours and see what happens.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Computer powers off randomlyMy PC will powers off randomly. There is no one function that causes it. I
can be running a program or sending an email or it could be sitting in an
idle state with no running processes and shuts down. Sometimes it will run
for days and sometimes it will only stay on for 20 minutes or so. Pressing
the power button will not restart the computer unless I first shut off the
power supply switch for a period of time.
My system is a three year old ABS.
Windows XP Home SP1 all updates.
AMD64 3400
Award F11 BIOS
Gigabyte, GA-K8N PRO Mother Board.
Fortron 530watt ATX power supply.
Coolermaster cooler
What I do not think is causing the problem.
I have clean and steady input line power off a Conext UPS.
I am virus and spyware free.
The system is clean and dust free.
All the fans are running.
If I monitor CPU temp in the BIOS it is good (32C - 35C).
I inspected the MB capacitors they all look good.
Checked all power connectors and cables.
Voltages reported good in BIOS (when I looked.)
Ran disc check no errors.
What may be causing it.
Bad temp sensor on MB - are there any work arounds, something I can shut off
in the BIOS to check this?
If my cpu cooler fan stalls for a split second and starts again will it
cause the system to shut down?
Broken ACPI, can it cause shut down issues, can it be disabled (in device
manager)to check for problems?
Possible bad power supply, why do I have to shut the switch off on the power
supply to get the system to power up after a failure?.
May be coincidence but the problem seemed to begin after a Windows update
a month or so ago.
I am still on SP1 I was going to update to SP2 when this problem began I do
not want to be in the middle of a op system update and have a power down.
When I view the event log nothing seems to be reported around the time of
shut down that is related.
Any help would be appreciated before I spend the big bucks I don't have for
tech support.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Audio and Video in Playback stopHi, my problem is that when I create a movie on the timeline, I can start the
preview, but after a few seconds of playback the video freezes and all the
sound stops. I've run a virus scan and nothing showed up, and I'm pretty
sure I haven't had any codec problems. This happened before, and I don't
want to reinstall MM again, so any help would be appreciated.
I'm running an Intel P4 3.2 ghz with 512 ram and a radeon 9200 256mb
graphics card.

the net after a while, mostly when checking email.
LoadPerf The performance counter name string value in the registry is
incorrectly formatted. The bogus string is , the bogus index value is the
first DWORD in Data section while the last valid index values are the second
and third DWORD in Data section.

- Windows XP Network >> Remote Desktop from two different subnets on two diferent routersi have a situation. i just moved in with my friend and he has a D-Link
router and i have a Linksys. well i ran a ethernet cable from his
router to mine. he has his router setup as a static ip and mine is
setup as dynamic. now his router gave my router a class b address and a
class b subnet mask. my router is limited to class c address and class
c subnet mask. well with that being said, i can remote desktop from my
laptop to his pc, but i can not remote desktop from his pc to my
laptop. i have made sure that my firewall that xp pro has is allowing
remote desktop. i have looked at my router and cant firgure why i can
remote to his pc but he cant remote to my laptop. any help out there?

got a full retail version of xp pro without s.p. 2 I got s.p. 2 on seperate

I need to lockdown a couple of machines that aren't on a domain -
here's the scenario:
Got a business requirement for public, "internet cafe" style net
access in a corporate setting. For a variety of legal, technical and
other reasons this isn't going to happen through our LAN, but via a
separate ADSL broadband install that is totally unconnected to our
main network. I'm anticipating a simple ADSL router and a couple of
machines connected to it - not even in a workgroup, but simply for
internet access.
What I want is to be able to nicely lockdown the clients for all users
apart from the admin. If this can be done with XP home then all well
and good - if it can be bodged with GPEDIT off a pro machine. If not,
we could get XP Pro.
I want to lockdown ability to install, hide various windows components
etc etc and this doesn't appear to be trivial.
Can anyone give a simple guide to doing this? All I've read so far
appears to involving GPEDIT much like you would on a domain, but just
on the local machine.
It's very tempting to save the licence money and stick a linux client
on but I think the punters would prefer the familiar XP GUI.

to dopy it to a CD-R using XP so that I can play it back
on my CD player. I tried using media player and it plays
fine on my computer but it wouldn't play on my CD player.
How do I do it?

- Windows XP Support >> Screen Shaking and BlackoutHi. I have a Toshiba laptop. Today the screen started shaking and then it
would dim out so I could barely make out what the screen was. I tried
changing the contrast, but that did nothing. When I changed the display mode
to LCD/Monitor, it would display for a while, but then start flickering and

- Windows XP >> Interesting Licensing QuestionWhich by the way hasn't been covered, or I just missed it in the past 3
years.
We all know you can use an upgrade version of XP if you own a previous OS
like 98, and are only required to put the disc in to verify, then XP will
install.
Now, what is the status of that Windows98 disk ? Can it still be used for a
PC installation ?

- Windows XP >> patin couffin access layer will not uninstallI have been trying to uninstall the patin couffin access
layer which is packaged with the Blind Write suite, and I
was able to do this successfully on a Win 2000 Pro
computer, however my XP home computer is not showing it in
the usual places in the device manager, even when "show
hidden devices" is checked.
If anyone knows where the hardware access layer files
would be stored within the windows directory, it makes
sense to me that i could try and manually delete or
uninstall them from there. does this sound possible???
any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Latest Security Update sent video on the fritzI installed the two latest updates (KB946026 & KB943055) and they both
installed successfully and the computer restarted. My video, however,
started giving a smeared (and unwanted) scroll moving to the left and also
up. It seemed as though the video was wrappping the display around itself
and smearing it as it did so. Uninstalled both updates and video is back to
normal. Using an ATI 9600 All-in-Wonder series on primary and secondary with
driver version 8.421.0.0 on the primary and driver version 8.221.0.0 on the
secondary. Primary was the only video output to display this problem as
Secondary was operating just fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

- Windows XP >> Office XP/WordCurrently when I try to open Word, (from Microsoft Office XP)the Window installer appears and takes about one minute to open the program. This started after I had to reload OfficeXP. Before this Word opened like any other program.What do I need to do to get a faster way to open this program? My OS is Microsoft XP Pro
