Windows XP >> Help With Booting XP Some time ago I was asking for help on a mobo upgrade to my PC .. I went from
Intel to AMD and a upgrade to my original disk was suppose to take care of
the HAL files etc. but it never worked. So I installed 2 SATA disks and
preformed a clean install but I left the old IDE disk in to pull data off it.
The problem I have now is .. the IDE disk is C: CDrom is D: and the SATA's
are E: & F: . The system will not boot if I disable the IDE disk ... it tells
me no boot files present or something like that ..... I tried booting off the
cdrom and used the commands to fix the boot sector and install the boot image
...

Any ideas??? also what about the disk labels does it matter if they stay E:
and F: ?? It would probably screw up all the paths in the environment and
probably the Registry correct ??? Can this be fixed ???

Thanks in advance

Leaving the IDE disk in place when you performed the new
installation was not a good idea. It means that IDE disk is your
boot disk, and without it you cannot boot. The following steps
***may*** fix your problem:
- Mark the system partition on your first SATA disk "active".
- Copy the hidden files ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini to
the system partition of your first SATA disk.
- Instruct the BIOS to boot off your first SATA disk.
- Modify the hidden file \boot.ini on your first SATA disk
so that it has lots of lines like these at the end:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="0 Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="1 Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="2 Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

This would let you select different system partitions until
you find one that works.

If you succeed then you may still have to do something
about your system drive letter. I assume that it now is C:.
It must be C: later on too.

An easier way to resolve this issue would be to reload
WinXP, this time with only the SATA disks connected.

Windows XP >> Help With Booting XP The quickest way to fix this is to open the case and disconnect the IDE
drive and one SATA. Then do a fresh install of XP. After this you can
reconnect your drives. You have nothing to lose by doing this except about
45 minutes of your time.
