 When I am in Windows|Explore, and when my mouse pointer is over a given
 file, I get a little pop up window telling me the file properties, which
 I happen to know how to get (File|Properties), and I find it annoying
 when I am doing file maintenance.
 
 I know I may be way outside of the main, but I create dozens of
 tempfiles in the course of a day, and from time to time, want to clean
 them all out. My position is, if I don't know what's in a file, I don't
 need it anymore. Is there any hope for me? Any advice will be gratefully
 appreciated.

 to boot up with last successful config, safe mode, etc. None of these work.
 Restore disk that came with PC will reformat the HD and lose all files. Is
 there someway to reach the C: drive without destroying all the data?

 - Windows XP Hardware >> Modem not working in Xp- works in win98I have two HDD, one having winxp and one having win98.
 My 56K modem works in win98 but in winxp it does not work.
 It installs as best data modem but when we dial any number
 it hangs. I downloaded drivers from connexent site for HSF
 and HCF modems. With this driver, modem works but the
 sound which you hear during connection do not stops. The
 sound continues till we disconnect the modem.
 
 May I have some advise please.

 Themes/desktop/screen saver/appearance/settings.
 
 The font for these tabs is too small ( like point 6 or less). How can I make
 the font for these tabs larger? thanks

 - Windows XP >> computer froze and now won't restartI was burning a cd and trying to hit "burn" when it froze I hit
 ctrl+alt+delete. and the task manager popped up and went away, i did this a
 few more times but t kept going away finally it said thei program is not
 responding would you like to end now? and i click end now and it still wasn't
 closing, after a little bit longer of still nothing i held down the on/off
 button. The computer cut off i waited a few seconds turned it back on and it
 was stuck at the Windows XP home edition loading screen and it was there for
 about 30 min, I figured it was just stuck and restarted it. Again, nothing,
 so now it is still "loading" and I don't know what else to do. PLEASE! help
 me if you have any advice!

 between a laptop & desktop both running XP Home.
 Everything works fine except the laptop, immediately after
 getting on the network, requests to get on the internet

 I have the original bill of sale, the product key on the back of the PC, and
 had no problems with Update's previous validation process.
 
 I have spoken to the local PC manufacturer that sold me the windows
 preinstalled computer in May 2004, who in turn spoke to Microsoft - between
 them could I not get a satisfactory answer, but hey, I can still get critical
 updates so what's the problem?
 
 Has this been seen by anyone else? Could my product key have been phished?
 Am I condemned to Genuine Advantage pop-up hell until I upgrade to Vista?

 Win98 boot disk doesn't have format program but DOS boot disk has the format

 ADSL connection, one 98 computer. Previously, the network
 was set up manually, with the USB modem connection shared
 at 192.168.0.1, and the other machines with IP addresses.
 Worked perfectly.
 
 Then an anonymous moron ran the XP Networking Wizard,
 which took over 192.168.0.1 with "Internet connection",
 refusing to allow me to manually set up the network the
 way it was. Some strange crap has now gone down since. The
 current situation is the main XP machine with the internet
 connection cannot connect to the other two, whilst the
 other two are happily networked, but can't connect to the
 main machine or the internet.
 
 If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be eternally grateful.

 - Windows XP Perform Maintain >> "end program power meter"Ok, so I downloaded the SP2 patch initially. Madness and
 slowness ensued. Went to the fixmywindows.com site to
 streamline things. ultimately i had to remove the sp2
 patch to get some sense of order and even shutdown. now, i
 get a message "end program power meter" when I shutdown,
 instead of the usual message free shutdown If I
 click "end now" it doesn't shutdown. If I click "cancel",
 it does shut down. is there something I'm missing? I have
 no idea what this message means and would like to go back
 to the normal shutdown protocol (pre SP2). Any ideas?

somebody change the settings in
Folder Options -> File Types -> Folder.

But I am not sure how to go about getting it back to normal.
Any suggestions?

Windows XP Support >> File Folders will not open I recently downloaded photos from my camera into the MyPictures folder. I
noticed late that the pictures had multiplied. When I tried to delete them.
they kept multiplying. If there a setting in windows XP that pertains to
making copies of deleted files?

 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 : Service Pack 1)? Currently running fine but I'm not using any
 USB2.0 devices or SATA HDs yet.
 
 My P4(800) Springdale Chipset system is up-to-date with all the Windows XP Service Packs,
 Driver Updates and Critical Updates found at the Windows Update page. My SATA and USB 2.0
 controllers show up in Device Manager without problems. However, my mainboard manufacturer's
 website has an Intel INF Utility posted for my board (a DFI PS83-BL using the latest BIOS)
 and I've pasted this Utility's Readme file description below.
 
 Also, my mainboard BIOS offers an "enhanced" mode option for enabling SATA which is supposed
 to allow for "both" SATA Channels plus 4 PATA devices (2 masters and 2 slaves) from the
 regular IDE controller. Furthermore, you can also choose to flip the SATA devices from 0 to
 1 and 1 to 0.
 
 I've emailed DFI many months ago several times about this but something must be getting lost
 in translation, as they have never responded.
 
 I searched newsgroups for this topic with Google which yield both "yes" and "maybe" answers.
 
 Also some postings seem to warn about "switching from PATA to SATA on existing WinXP
 installations." I get the feeling that something really bad will happen if I did that, so
 I'm concerned because I need to upgrade to larger HDs. I would like to get a pair of SATA
 160 Gb units. I plan to clone my existing PATA HDs using DriveImage7 and then switch to the
 SATA connectors (which will also free up the standard onboard IDE controller for my DVD,
 Burner and Zip drives).
 
 Currently running with 2 - PATA 60 Gb Maxtors, each set as a master from the motherboard's
 standard IDE controller (only WinXP Pro ... no other operating systems):
 
 HD #1 - C and D (C Drive Primary Booting with D as a logical, both NTFS);
 HD #2 - E and F (both logicals for data files and image backups, both NTFS)
 
 Is this a bad thing to try and do I need the Intel INF file Utility installed prior to doing
 this?
 
 BTW, I thought WinXP (with the latest Service Packs) already supported SATA, USB2.0, etc
 hardware? Is there a way under Device Manager, etc where I can check to see if my drivers,
 etc could benefit from running the Intel INF Utility listed below:

 administration rights for their PCs.
 If one user changes in calc.exe to scientific mode, calc.exe does not
 remember this and starts the next time again in normal mode.

 an MS USB optical mouse. It was working fine until this morning when it
 worked for a minute and suddenly stopped. I tried a different mouse, an IBM
 USB optical mouse, and it still didn't recognize it.
 Nothing unusual happened to the computer that we're aware of at the time the
 mouse stopped working.
 A PS2 mouse works fine.
 The computer does not recognize the USB mice using a USB-PS2 adapter.
 The USB port works fine. I plugged in a USB joystick and the computer
 recognized it.
 The mice both work fine. I plugged them into another computer, which is
 running Windows XP Pro, with no problems.

 receive the same error. The system will only boot if the XP disk is in the
