- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> What is going on?Yesterday while I was working on a program all of the sudden the computer just shuts off. Now when I start the computer up everything is fine up to the profile select page, then when I select a profile it takes almost 2 minutes for the desktop to load.
I tried going to my computer, properties, advanced, startup and recovery to disable auto restart but the program won't open and I get the "is not responding" message.
What is going on here?????

- Windows XP >> XP Home sp2 DEP questionI have an ABIT IC7 mobo, 1GB Geil DC DDR, P4 2.8C
processor. The Data Execution Prevention featured is
greyed out and the message says due to hardware design
your processor doesn;t support DEP. Is that normal for a
newer processor?

- Windows XP Setup >> Pictures in PDF icons in 'My documents' fileWhen I store PDF-documents in the file 'My documents' I sometimes can see
the first page of the document (like I can see a picture) in the icon of the
document and sometimes not. What can I do to see the first page in all the
PDF icons?
I have MS Windows XP Version 5.1 with Sevice Pack 2.

- Windows XP Support >> Some users get error 1325 when trying to install softwareI have just been told that over the past few months certain users get the
following error message when they try to install software (seems to be .msi
files):
Error 1325. USERSNAME is not a valid short file name.
The error message only occurs at one site, both sites computers are loaded
from the same image.
I have Windows XP SP2 computers setup in a domain across 2 sites, I use
group policies to control user access etc.
I have compared GPO's from each site, for each set of users, they're almost
identical apart from version numbers and site specific folder redirections.
The site with the errors does have an entry for one set of computers (not
all) about software install, with nothing in it, but no matter what I
change, I cannot remove it.
Any ideas what I could try next to get rid of this problem?
Thanks

- Windows XP Support >> TV CommercialI have seen now several times a commercial on cable TV regarding a program
titled Transfer Ease. not totally sure of the spelling. Program states it
includes a CD, Cable, able to transfer files from one computer to another,
with ease. Anybody also see it?. Price is minimal, not the concern, just the
program itself. Appreciate any comments.

- Windows XP >> Error when booting from CDWhenever I boot from the XP Pro CD (OEM) which I have had
to do a couple of times on my Dell I get an error during
the time it is loading system stuff. The error is
"An unexpected error (16384) occured at line 5133 in
d:/xpsp1\base\boot\setup\setup.c"
After that all seems to go according to plan but I have
had a few troublesome glitches.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

- Windows XP Setup >> System32 Trojan horseI made a post a while ago about system32.exe. It runs
out that this file was a trojan horse. It's great that
it is gone but now I'm trying to figure out how to get
rid of the box that shows up when I start up my computer.
Thanks,

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Outlook & Explorer problemI got a small "Windows Update" this morning that
automatically installed itself. There was no need to
reboot after the install but I have rebooted several times
since then. Since the Update & install, I can't get cursor
or keyboard control in Outlook. The cursor can be seen on
the screen as an arrow but will not attach to any text.
The keyboard won't work period. I can't send emails & when
I tried to reply to one, the whole email was kicked into
the Drafts folder. Anybody else having this glitch &/or
any suggestions?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Some quality loss when written back to tapeHi,
I captured in DV-AVI format, supposed to be lossless, and then wrote back to DV tape. When watching edited tape and original tape using frame by frame it is obvious that some quality was lost when transferred to Movie Maker and back to tape.
Did anybody experience this or know why something like this would happen?
Thanks,
Sergei.

messages - "the collections file is not valid or is
corrupted. A new empty collections file has been created".
followed by "the specified module could not be found"
followed by "a new collections file cannot be created"
The program then gives a MS error report message and
closes.
Can anyone help?

even thought I shut down with "never" selected.
What's wrong??

Glenda, when you moved did you change ISPs? For this feature both you and
your ISP must use V92 modems. Many ISPs don't use V92 modems.

You have to have call waiting on your telephone for the
GTW v.92 modem to alert you to an incoming phone call.
Also, you have to make sure that you leave your calling
waiting feature active when you go online. Make sure that
the modem is not dialing *70 before dialing your internet
service provider number.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Formatting/Clean Install QuestionI just wiped ME off a friends PC and formatted and tried to do a clean

After formatting.... the screen says that XP could not be installed on this

It also said that I should check to make sure that the drive should be
turned on?
Not sure what all this means.
I have done many clean installs and never had this screen appear.
Is the HD bad?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Network >> Setting up a network using Win XP Desktop & Win 2K LaptopHi, I am trying to get my Win XP desktop to see files and

- Windows XP Setup >> How to access another machine's NTFS drive as an external USB driveI've been trying to fix a Win2K machine with disk errors. I thought I
should be able to hook up the drive via an external USB adapter or
enclosure, but I can't get a "handle" on it. I can see the disk in Disk
Management, and it's whirring away. I can even get Ghost to start cloning
it, although it gave up the Ghost (ouch) when it found 64 bad sectors (is
that a lot?).
I'd been told that all I needed to do was take ownership of the drive from
my XP admin account and then set suitable permissions, but the disk hasn't
been allocated a drive letter and I can't find any options other than
removing the partition. Any ideas gratefully received.

- Windows XP >> Restore event on external driveGreetings.
Now that I have a full system restoration program, I was wondering if the
external drive files would be affected. The reason I'm asking is my concern
of files no longer being identified as when I use System Restore feature to
an earlier point. Since System Restore is monitoring all hard drives, plus
external drive, would restoring to an earlier time also affect the external
drive's files? If so, I would think a full system restore would also not
identify files created after that point. I'm reluctant to keep my external
drive on to find out. Thank you.

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update Failure Fix!!!I just downloaded the "Dial-a Fix" software v0.60.0.24 located at
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
I installed it on two different machines and it fixed them both and allowed
the updates to complete.
Download the .exe file. Click on it and just check the following boxes:
1. MSI: Check the Fix Windows Installer. This will also check the 4 boxes
below.
2. WU/WUAU: Check Fix Windows Update. This will also check the 3 boxes below
it and all the SSL/HTTPS/Cryptography boxes.
3.Registeration center: Check all boxes the click 'Go"
It takes about 3 minutes to complete.
