- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> XP backup restore question...please help!I backed up my partitioned hard drive....E & F that contain programs and data
using the backup wizard. It put them all in one file that was saved on my
external hard drive. Now, after reloading windows, repartioning the hard
drive and adding sp 2 again, when trying to restore, an error message says
that there is unrecognizable media in the file. Talking to a friend that
knows more than myself, he said that maybe because of the program files in
there too, it won't restore. I didn't even think of that.
So, my question is, is there anyway of going into the backup file and just
restoring everything on the F drive, the data? What options do I have?

- Windows XP Hardware >> optimal cluster size?good morning - i am running an xp home machine, with a 40 Gb boot drive, and
a 200Gb data drive. The data drive is partitioned with 512 byte clusters;
the boot drive with 4 Kb clusters. Would it be advisable to resize the boot
drive with 512 byte clusters? I am a photographer running, primarily,
PhotoShop CS, Illustrator CS, Flash MX and Dreamweaver MX. PhotoShop uses
the data drive as a scratch disk, often with files approaching 200 Mb, hence
the question about both compatibility and speed with regard to the disparity
of cluster sizes.
Any and all answers appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> accessing removed harddriveI am about to remove my main HD with XP on it and replace it with 2 W.D. HD's
with RAID striped array on a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP MB.
My question is "with security on XP, after i remove my old harddrive will I
be able to access the files on the drive if I place it on a secondary ide
slot?"

says "setupdd.sys could not be loaded the error code is
7" and it will not allow me to continue, just reboots?
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Support >> AutoplayI used to get a pop up box on my computer when I put in a CD of any type. A
box would open and ask what I wanted to do. It gave several choices. ... burn
a CD, watch a CD, do nothing, etc. Now when I put in a cd of any type
nothing happens. How do I get my choice box back? I have gone to start, my
computer, right click on E drive, select properties, select autoplay,
selected prompt me each time for each content type. Still does not do
anything.
Anyone have other things I can try?

- Windows XP >> Interpretation of System log error messagesI am running XP Pro on a Compaq laptop with an external "burner." Recently I
had 'crashes' from which Ws recovered. I was given the following references
in the System Log:
Event- 1003; Category- [102]; Source- System Error // Event- 7009; Source-
Service Control Manager // Event- 10005; Source- DCOM // Event - 10010;
Source- DCOM // Event- 11; Source- cdrom // Event- 7; Source- cdrom.
I would appreciate an interpretation of these references or directions to a
MS site for same. Thanks.

- Windows XP Update >> system 32 not a valid windows imageI downloaded an upgrade to Norton Internet Security and when I restarted the
computer I get many "bad image" message
"The application or DLL c:\sindow\system 32\logcho.dll is anot a valid
windows image. Please check this against your installation disk."
Should I go back to my disks that came with the computer 2 years ago?

- Windows XP >> running in Dos - virus removalI have in the past run in DOS mode to do a virus scan by
typing in "scan/adl/clean/all". I have used this twice
to remove viruses. At one point I again tried to run
this scan but received the following error "CLEAN.DAT
not found." I did contact someone who helped me retype
by putting spaces in between each "/" and it did run fine.
Now once again it will not run - not even with the
spaces. would someone PLEASE point me in the right
direction. I would be eternally grateful!!!!!

- Windows XP Security >> NT Domain/Printer ProblemsI'm currently in the process of installing a few XP Pro workstations on an
NT domain. These PCs must run some DOS software. Printers are all HP
Laserjets with JetDirect cards.
I use a login script to execute a NET USE for each printer:
NET USE LPT1: \\NTSERVER\ReceptionPrinter /PERSISTENT:YES
1. All of the printers (3 in all) are set up with identical security
settings on the NT Domain. Yet, one of the three NET USE commands
consistently fails (requesting a username/pw) when the user is not an
administrator.
2. Have been trying to use the rundll32 commands to install the printers for
"ALL" users (per machine installation), but this doesn't seem to work as it
did with W2K. Could be related to problem (1) though.
3. The printer involved is an HP 4050 which has no XP driver on the NT
Server. Is there a way to put it on the server so printer installation is
simpler? It seems like installation of the XP driver is a major pain that
could be easily avoided if I could install it on the NT Server, but I find
no way to do this with an XP driver.
Any suggestions, remarks on any of these items will be appreciated.

- Windows XP Setup >> Deleting Multiple UsersNot sure I'm in the right place, but here goes.
On a clean reinstall, WInXP decided I should have 3 users; All Users, David
(me), and Owner. I am the sole user of this comp. Any way I can at least
get rid of "Owner" (Understand I'm stuck with All Users)

- Windows XP Support >> errors on pageon the bottom left i get "done with errors on page". several web sites i
also have problems with, it keeps asking for password over and over. on my
yahoo mail, it causes even more problems, most of the time i cant compose
mail or reply to mail due to errors on page. no one on the sites knows what
is the cause, they thought it was my java, but when i checked it, it passed
all the tests. now i dont know what to do. any ideas.

- Windows XP Support >> restore without windows cd?I have lost my windows cd for the winbox at my house. The computer was
custom built so it does not have a restore partition. Is there any way
to restore it without any cd? By the way, I don't mean using the
windows restore thing, i want to completely reinstall windows on a
blank system.

- Windows XP Setup >> Error Message on Startup Winkb6On startup the follwoing message appears in a popup window:

File access denied - c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WBCONF.DAT
It comes up in a new window every 4 seconds or so and does not stop although
I can use the computer if I just ignore the error popups.
Can anyone help pleas?

- Windows XP Setup >> unread email messages on logon screenI've recently upgraded to Windows XP. Now, it seems to
indicate that I have unread email messages. I currently
have 2 email accounts (AOL and cable). There are also
other users defined on the computer.
Where does Windows XP look for that information and how
can it be pointed to the correct email source?

I recently did a reformat and reinstallation of WinXP,
and have had the recurring problem of the My Pictures
folder crash Explorer whenever I open it. I've heard that
there is a hotfix for it, issued sometime this month, but
haven't been able to find it. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Hello Alicht,
If Explorer.exe is crashing, then you will want to verify if this occurs in
Safe Mode or not.
If it does not, then do the following -
A) Go to Start\Run and type
MSCONFIG <OK>
B) In MSConfig, choose "Selective Startup"
C) Remove all check boxes and click "OK" and "Yes" to reboot.
Then test our issue.
D) If you don?t see the problem at this point, check all except "System
Services" and "Startup Items", click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot then test our issue.
E) If you don?t see the problem at this point, check all except "System
Services", click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot and then test our issue.
F) If the problem returns, it is due to a Startup Item. If not, it is a
Service.
For Services:
G) Click the Services tab and check the box for ?Hide all Microsoft
Services.?
H) Enable SOME of the disabled items, click "OK" and "Yes".
Reboot, then test our issue.
For Startup Items:
I) Click the Startup tab and enable SOME of the disabled items, click "OK"
and "Yes".
Reboot, then test our issue.
J) Repeat until you track down the offending component.
If it does occur, then we need to look at the user dump.
To make sure you are configured to get a full user dump do the following -
1. Go to Start\Run and type drwtsn32
2. In the Dr Watson properties make sure you have -
Crash Dump Type = Full
Create Crash Dump File - checked
3. Click okay and then reproduce the problem.
You should now have a user.dmp file in the following location -
C:\Documents and Settings\<profile>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson
If you can zip this up to be under 10mb, then you can e-mail it to me for
review. Just remove the online portion from my listed e-mail.
I cannot guarantee I will be able to figure it out, but I will see what I
can do.
Also, I did look for a specific update for Explorer.exe crashing when going
into My Pictures, but I did not find this specific update.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Format 80 Gig firewire drive to FAT32 under XP proI need to format an 80 gig firewire drive under XP, but
this doesn't seem possible with XP. According to the
documentation, there is a limit of 32 gigs for formatting
under XP (even though it will recognize larger volumes).
An article mentions using a win98 startup disk to format,
but this isn't going to work, because it's not going to
recognize the firewire drive. Anybody have any
recommendations? (going to NTFS isn't possible, I need to
use the drive with a Mac as well as my XP machine).

- Windows XP >> WinXP is hanging during login...?When my server boots into windows it hangs at the login
screen saying..."Loading your personal settings" it stays
there for about 5-10mins before the screen saver kicks in
then the desktop will appear. I've turned off all startup
apps and even reinstalled windows on top of the old setup.

On the older one, I want to run all my old games, but most
of them require dos. I've searched and searched and no one

- Windows XP Hardware >> Won't boot from SATA drivesMy system has an Asus A7N8X motherboard with 2 SATA HDs, by Hitachi and
Seagate. Runs XP SP2. After several years' good service, it has
developed a fault that it will not boot from these drives, nor recognise
them if I boot from a floppy. However, I can boot from an old IDE HD, or
from a CD, in which case the system recognises and manages the SATA
drives perfectly.
Seagate and Hitachi diagnostics, run from a floppy, disclose no problems
with the disks.
I've changed the power supply, which was my first suspect.
If I zero out either disk, then try a clean XP install, it fails
starting the second phase where it should boot from the HD.
I'd be grateful for any suggestions where to look or what tests to run next.

- Windows XP Setup >> Connecting XP Pro workstation to NT4 modem poolI have an XP Pro workstation that I need to connect to a modem pool on
our RAS server for dial-out to a payroll provider. In NT 4.0
workstation I would add the Remote Access Service and set up a COM
port on the RAS server. It was a TCP/IP connection to the server,
which would then dial the specified number. Is anyone aware of a way
to get this to work in XP? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My
buns are getting toastier by the minute. ;)

- Windows XP Support >> Validation ProcessI have read almost every question, complaint and comment on the Windows
validation process. I have not seen anything that answers my question
directly. I have a network with no internet connection. I would like to
install IE7 but I cannot get past the validation since it cannot check the OS
license without Internet connection. I've have read that the validation needs
to connect to the server to validate but how do others in my situation
install IE7? I have about 5 computers that I would like to upgrade to IE7
but I can't validate the OS. Any suggestion and recommendation? BTW I'm
running Windows XP with SP 2 with legitimate licenses.

is one of those sites thst tries to sell you some file removal system. I
have searched my computer as best as I can but can't find the reason for

- Windows XP Support >> Problem with speakersI just installed Windows XP with SP2 and I cannot get my speakers to work.
I have gone to the sounds and devices: The speaker buttons are not
accessible, I cannot play the computer sounds and I get two different error
messages-one tells me that there are not mixer devices when I try to test the
speech and the other tells me that my sound card may be in use when I try to
play the computer sounds.
The speakers are plugged in and they are working. When I turn the sound up
I hear static, but still nothing plays.
I also went into DirectX diagnostics(I could not think of anything else to
do) and under the sound tab, when I ran the test, I got a message that says
that the request failed because some DirectSound resource, like the priority
level, was in use by another caller.
I installed XP without partitioning drives. I just installed it over
Windows 98.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Epson C82 prints too lightI've just been making a few prints on special glossy paper, using the
highest quality colour setting of my Epson C82 Stylus (on a PC under
Win XP).
They were pretty good, but definitely all a bit *lighter* than the
screen image. Is this a characteristic of the printer? Is there
anything I can do about it please, (apart from darkening the original
and guessing the outcome)?

Just now, I fixed my brother in law's computer. He had downloaded a virus
about a month back and he was not able to get on certain web sites. Long
story short, I fixed that issue and and my nephews are very happy!
He does not seem to have any other problems except for one interesting item.
Every time the machine is rebooted and we login, we get the message "Windows
cannot find the file ssttr.exe in C:\WINDOWS\System32\ssttr.exe."
I deleted this file, as a web site stated that this is a "bad" file. But,
this message still comes up upon reboot.
It is not a huge problem and most worries seem to be gone. But, it would be
nice to get rid of this error.
I have run AdAware, Spybot, and even the new Windows Defender program that
Microsoft has. No success.
Any ideas?
