- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> dll problemRunning XP Home. I recently installed Encarta Ref.
Library 2004DVD to my HD, over the top of the 2003
version (it said it was ok to do that) and it went
through deleting various files from the 2003 version and
installed fine. However, I think it may have deleted
some dll files as well. My Retrospect software for my
external hard drive suddenly wouldn't start and said it
was missing msvcr70.dll. So I downloaded it off the net
and put it in my c:\windows\system32 folder and that got
that program running. Yesterday I tried to download an
audiobook using Audible Manager (a program from
www.audible.com that facilitates the downloading of audio
books) and suddenly it said I was missing msvci70.dll, so
I downloaded and installed it, then it said i was missing
mfc70.dll, so I downloaded and copied it to the system32
directory and then tried again and this time it just
gives me an error, saying it can't initialize the
program. Any idea what I might do or is it just best to
reinstall the Audible Manager program? (will that cure
it?).
Thanks,
Mark

- Windows XP >> ACTIVStudio - Error: problem obtaining valid path for applicationI am having problems opening ActivStudio software. The problem first
arrose in version 3 but now version 2 is popping up with the same
error when the program is started.
Error: problem obtaining valid path for application
The software is installed on each machine. It runs as an administrator
but it would not run for teachers so I have made "teachers" local
administrator to the appropriate PCs and that has made it work.
However, this is only a temporary fix as I do not want to leave such
rights available for teachers to use.
The problem seems very intermittent. One day it will work, another it
wont. I have tried contacting Promethean for there support but they
are blaming the network and access rights.
I cannot for the life of me seem to find a fix for this.......... any
advice anyone????

- Windows XP >> SUGGESTION TO SHORTEN BOOT UP TIMESUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO SHORTEN BOOT UP TIME
I had notebook with run by WinXpSp2
.
I had discovered that my laptop boot up time is increased and I want
to shorten it. Somebody suggested to check the event viewer and found
out that there are application errors amounting to 512 kb and viewing
the properties found these
Name: T size
Application log application error 512 kb
Security log security audit 64kb
System log system error 512 kb
What does this information means?
The application errors it says that when the capacity has reached 512
kb it can either be manually deleted, overwrite events when needed or
overwrite manually.
I would like know what is the best option for the three choices given?
Another suggestion was to Right-click "My Computer", Properties,
"Advanced" tab, "Startup and Recovery" Advanced button,
and change the two "Time to display..." settings to 5 seconds instead
of 30, and OK your way out
Could somebody give me some ideas?
TIA

- Windows XP Support >> WinXPsp2 Error 1508Everytime I turn on my machine I get an error 1508 saying insufficient
resources to load user profile. When I restart in safe mode it boots
successfully and then if I restart from there it boots correctly in normal
mode. It does this everytime.
I recently upgraded video card and am wondering if this could be a result of
insufficient power supply.
The only answer in the KnowledgeBase is that the registry is failing to load
because of insufficient resources.

Windows XP Security >> Help!!! Cannot remove viruses from Uncle's Computer!!!
Hello...
I 'm having a bit of a problem here:
I use AVG 7.0 (updated every week or so) and when I scan my Uncle Mario's
computer with BOTH Ad-aware SE Personal and AVG I remove about 17-30 viruses
from it and then in about 3 minutes another 17-25 viruses show up again and I
can remove them but they keep coming in.
Does anyone know how to get rid of those viruses once and for all?
My Uncle Mario's computer is running an up-to-date AVG 7 and Ad-Aware SE
Personal.
Can U help me?

Windows XP Security >> Help!!! Cannot remove viruses from Uncle's Computer!!!
There are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.
microsoft.public.scripting.virus.discussion
microsoft.public.security.virus
alt.comp.virus
alt.comp.anti-virus
If they keep coming back, then you either have NOT cleaned the system or you are being
reinfected. Please perform the following directions...
1) Download the following two items...
Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp
Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp
Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")
Download SYSCLEAN.COM and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt307.zip
Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
SYSCLEAN.COM .
2) Update Adware SE
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode then shutdown as many applications as possible.
5) Using the Trend Sysclean utility and Adware SE, perform a Full Scan of your platform
and clean/delete any and all infectors found
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point
* * * Please report back your results * * *
Dave
BTW: Adaware is for non-viral malware and you have not indicated EAXTLY what the "...17-25
viruses.." are called.

Windows XP Security >> Help!!! Cannot remove viruses from Uncle's Computer!!!
Your Registry is probably fu**ed up. They probably re-download as soon as
they notice they are missing.
Two Things You can do...
1. Run msconfig.
Start>Run>msconfig
Check the "Services" tab. Click "Hide Microsoft Services" checkbox.
Uncheck any services that you are leery of.
Also, check the Startup tab. Uncheck any startup programs you are un-aware
of.
2. A DRASTIC APPROACH - So, if the files are deleted, they come right back.
First, when doing the scan, DISCONNECT FROM THE NET! This way, they can't
phone home. Second. Make a new text-document. Open it, save it as
"filename.exe", where filename is the name of the virus exe. Do this for all
the Viruses, and then swap the files, delete the bad, and replace with the
phonys. This way, if they try to do a status check, an exe still shows up.
It may work...
Good Luck

Windows XP Security >> Help!!! Cannot remove viruses from Uncle's Computer!!!
When its reporting the presence of the infections is it by chance reporting
them in the system volume folder ? If so then
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn off System restore on all Drives.
Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will
be created.

- Windows XP Support >> Un-Checking Case sensitive Box in Explorer Search Gets Un-expected ResultsWindows XP Home SP1
When using XP's search for files in Explorer, I noticed that.
If I _un-check_ the Case sensitive box, the search doesn't work, even if
the search string exactly matches the file name I'm searching for.
If I _check_ the Case sensitive box, the search works and I get the
correct result, even if the search string is case-different then the
file name I'm searching for.
Has anybody else seen this behavior?
This is more of an oddity than a problem, but is there a solution or an
explanation?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> MMM2 - Won't play audio or videoI'm trying to preview a transition, but it's not working, I've tried reinstalling it, I've converted the videos I import to different codecs, I've practically tried everything, and it STILL won't work. I just want to edit a project I saved, but it won't play no matter where I put the "insertation point" thing. Then after a few seconds, the whole entire program freezes, it doesn't crash it just freezes. I know it's not a memory problem because I've got PLENTY of memory. If Microsoft doesn't fix Movie Maker soon, I'm going to buy and Apple computer and a video editing program I've heard works great on Apple.
Before I finish, I have one thing to ask Microsoft: Why the hell would such a huge computer software company they make such an underdeveloped program? It doesn't make any sense

- Windows XP Update >> windows xp update problemWhen I use IE6- tools- windows update, I get the followinh message:

The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the

sure the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it

For years it always checked and gave me a list to choose from.
No changes to programs
How do you check for ActiveX??

- Windows XP Setup >> Move NTFS hard drive to new computer & access files and foldersMy old computer smoked. I think the motherboard died,
smoke literally filled the room. I am trying to move my
old hard drive which was running XP Pro and was the boot
drive formatted as NTFS to my new computer. I had the old
drive setup with mulitple users and accounts. I am able
to access the folders of the users that were did not have
admin rights, however I am unable to access my main "My
Documents" folder. When I click on the my documents
folder under my user name (I'm the administrator of the
old computer), I receive the:
"documents and settings\{login name} is not accessible.
Access is denied."
error message
Can someone please help? I am thinking that I need to
login to the hard drive so that I can access the files,
but when I try to set my old hard drive as the boot disk
the computer doesn't boot.

- Windows XP Support >> a couple of file management / backup issuesHi,
A few simple questions:
1 - When copying multiple files via windows, if the destination folder
contains a duplicate filename, you get the option to "replace this
file, replace all duplicate files, skip this file or cancel - is there
any software available (preferably free), which will let me skip all
duplicate files, or even better, skip all duplicate files, and produce
a log file of any duplicates, where file size, or date differs, so I
can decide what to do with those?
2 - I have a multiboot system, and when copying files in win98, if
copying single files, it will just create a shortcut in the destination
directory - how can I change it so it automatically copies the file?
3 - I have just backed up a large demos directory onto cd (using roxio
easy cd)- I will be adding to this directory, but the programs / files
on there at the moment will not change (or if they do, backup will be
trivial) - is there any way I can mark these as "backed up", so that
next time I do a backup run, it will only backup the files/programs
added since the last run? (so far I've either created directories which
I won't add to when I've backed up, or copied everything to 2
locations, 1 where they'll be kept, and one temporary one so I know
what I need to back up, and backed up the extra directory)
Thanks

- Windows XP Security >> Very strange problems -- permissions???I've had a Dell XPS M140 notebook, running Windows XP Media Center 2005, for
a little over a month now, and have experienced some very, very strange
things. First, InstallShield crashed (finally did get things working again).
Next, when I upgraded the bundled version of RealPlayer to 10.5, I kept
getting a "SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER" error message on startup. After two weeks of
troubleshooting with the RealNetworks Tier 3 escalation team, we were able to
determine that this was being caused by a leftover registry key. But, even
though I have permissions to edit and delete keys in my registry, I
absolutely cannot delete this particular key, no matter what I try. And no
one can tell me why. In order NOT to get the error message, I am forced to
run a legacy version of RealPlayer.
Third, I can't seem to uncheck any Start Up items. Whenever I do and reboot,
duplicates of those items appear checked in the Start Up list -- in addition
to those that were unchecked.
Fourth, when I tried to update my Bluetooth driver to the latest version,
the process just hung repeatedly. I spent over two hours on the phone with
Dell tech support, but I never was able to install the update. And they
didn't know why.
And last, but not least, to try to "undo" whatever weirdness the BT
non-update might have caused, I did a system restore (with tech support on
the phone). Although the restore seemed to be successful (it was listed in
the System Restore checkpoints), I never saw any evidence of the restore
process on screen, nor did I get any message that the restore had been
competed successfully! (I do get these when doing a system restore on my
desktop computer.) The tech support guy had absolutely no explanation for
this, either.
So, if anyone can offer any insight into what on earth is going on with my
computer, I certainly would look forward to hearing from you!

- Windows XP >> System working like... not too wellMy sisters computer with XP Home is suddenly working really badly. Word wont
start, can't open the remove/add item option, can't update, can't do nothing.
These things happen on the administrator profile but not another, which to
some degree indicate a self inflicted problem. Does anyone have an idea as
how to fix it?
More often than not it says some file is not working well. Rundll.exe seems
to be a popular dude when the error display message appears.
Please help, I'm going quite crazy trying to figure it out.
