- Windows XP Support >> New slipstream or delete updates?Hello Group!
I am having a few problems with my machine, and I hopefully will be
able to do a rebuild,
rather than a full repair/reinstall of XP. (fingers xx'ed)
Last year I created a slipstream of SP2. What I wanted to know was:
should I create a new slipstreamed SP2 with all of the new updates that
I have on my machine from the past year, or delete all of the updates,
or just use the original slipstreamed XP. OR if anyone has any other
suggestions, I am a sponge ready to learn!
I have always kept up with the windows updates.
Thanks!

- Windows XP Security >> How do I set this up?I have 3 computers all on the same network and subnet. Computer1 has
sensitive information that must be secured. However, I need to be able to
access Computer1 from Computer2 and Computer3. I've shared the root of
Computer1 and now I need to know what local and share permissions I need to
set so that 2 and 3 can access 1. Also, do I need to do anything with the
policies on any of the computers? What about user accounts, do I need to
create user accounts on Computer1 with the same name as accounts on 2 and 3?
It's been a long time since I've done this stuff. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

- Windows XP Update >> window explorer open file from 3rd party softwareI have XP Professional SP 2 with Radeon X800XT video card.
In the past 3 days I am having problem opening file from Photoshop 7 using
"File->Open". I get to the directory where my file is and the software
disappears without error messages. Also if I have window explorer opened but
minimized and working in either Photoshop or Creator the system come up with
window explorer failed and does a reset of sort. Reset meaning explorer
disappears and a warning saying my system is not protected by a firewall,
which normally appears after restarting or booting up the system. The
Creator and Photoshop are still up and running when explorer fails. I
removed update KB900985, but had the same problem so I reinstalled the patch.
I recently installed the "Window Genuine Advantage Notication (KB905474)" at
the same time as KB900985, could the problem be from these two patches?

- Windows XP Update >> WSUS problemHello,
I have recently introduced WSUS onto our school's network. The installation
went fine and all computers (approx 140) were visible. The WSUS server
synchronised just fine and I have changed the approval category of all
updates to "install". However, on the WSUS server conolse I can see that
all of the computers have stats such as (for example) 12 Updates installed,
58 Needed.
This is obviously from manual updates that have been ran prviously so WSUS
does not seem to be working in terms of dispersing updates to clients. I
have checked the WSUS directory and the permissions are correct.
Group policy is setup (under Computer Admin Templates) for the clients to
point to the right server for WSUS and everything else is setup as per the
installation documents from microsoft.
Can anyone help me with this? Is there something I need to do on each
client (bar group policy) to invoke WSUS?
thanks in advance!

Windows XP >> Outlook Express
My PC has recently become very slow when I click "Message, Block Sender" to
stop unwanted e-mails, and when I click "File, Switch Identity" to go to a
different e-mail account. Everything else seems to work fine, and when I run
Norton SystemWorks nothing shows up as a problem.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Phil, profile may be corrupt
What I'd look at is

Second one may help, but first one is better.

Let us know if that helps. Yes, and Dave's right. Post this in the proper
group. chances are folks in general are may not be using the same app you
are. Try to get as close as possible to the post you need.

Also try deleting the files in the Deleted Items folder.. When it get
up to 50 or more MB, OE gets slower.
The large sized "Block Sender" list could be a problem too. Here's a
better way to block senders:
Create two mail rules.
First rule:
A. In "Select the conditions for your rule" click "Where the from line
contains people", click "contains people", click Address Book, click
the first name, shift-click the last, click "From" button, click OK.
B. In "Select the actions for your rule", click "Stop processing more
rules". This will let everyone in your address book fall through to
your Inbox.
C. Name the rule "Pass".
Second rule:
A. In "Select the conditions for your rule" click "For all messages"
B. In "Select the actions for your rule", click "Delete it".
C. Name the rule "Delete".
You might want to set OE to delete the Deleted Items folder every time
you close OE. One disadvantage: You might have to close OE in a hurry
sometimes before you have a chance to check for missed messages.
Advantages:
1. No SPAM! No amount of filtering by sender or subject matter will
prevent spammers; they use a different subject and address ever few days.
2. Few Viruses! Only viruses from those who have your email address in
their address book.
Disadvantages:
1. You'll have to look in the Deleted Items folder for blocked email.
If you find a mail you actually want, just drag it into the Inbox till
you add that address to the Pass filter.
2. To add addresses to the filter, you'll have to edit it, click
"contains people", click "Address Book" again, and add any new
addresses. That can be an occasional nuisance, but you're creating many
mail rules for SPAM now.

- Windows XP Setup >> No disc formatting option in my new Windows XP?Hi all,
I'm after some advice please.
My laptop hard disc died, so I got it fixed at a computer shop, who called
Acer and got Windows XP reloaded onto the computer (I have a rego no. stuck
under the laptop).
Now I don't seem to be able to format any discs (such as CDs or DVDs), or
even play a DVD movie on the laptop.
The laptop used to burn, format and play CDs & DVDs.
I tried using help that explained step by step how to format, but the
selection just isn't there on the file menu. Only to erase a disc.
Any ideas at all?
Thanks so much.

- Windows XP Support >> aspi32 error on bootup in system log?Hi there. Hope someone can help...
Have been trundling through the Event Viewer in the system log and am
coming across a startup error on the lines of
The Aspi32 service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
Have run a sc query aspi32 and output is:
SERVICE_NAME: aspi32
TYPE: 1 KERNEL_DRIVER
STATE: 1 STOPPED
<NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN>
WIN32_EXIT_CODE: 2 (0x2)
SERVICE_EXIT_CO: 0 (0x0)
WAIT_HINT: 0x0
My sudden interest in debugging started when my PC kept locking up for
some reason. Disabling HT worked but I wasn't happy at wasting the
full potential of the CPU so decided to try and get to the root of the
problem instead!

- Windows XP >> Microsoft Works/MS Word on HP PavilionHi-
Just bought HP Pavilion Notebook, and downloaded MS Works with MS Word,
Excel, Access, etc. However, as soon as I start typing in Word, the
screen starts "jumping" up and down as if the PC had a virus. I spoke
to HP support, they said since Excel works fine, it must be the Word
problem, suggested to uninstall the MS Works. I unisntalled and
installed it again a few times, however, the problem keeps occurring.
I am not sure if I should bring the Notebook back at this point, or
not.
Any suggestions? Thanks...

- Windows XP Basic >> Camera and Scanner WizardI just installed Nero 6 Ultra software. Included in this software is Nero
Photo Express. After this software is installed, my Camera and Scanner
Wizard no longer works.
I use an SD card and I have a built in card reader. Before installing Nero,
the Camera and Scanner Wizard screen would come up and ask me what I wanted
to do with media (pictures). I had choices.
After installing Nero 6 (including Nero Photo Express), the only screen that
comes up is Nero Photo Express when I place an SD card in card reader.
Yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled software. Yes, I have unchecked all
boxes that relate to Nero being "default". Yes, I have checked XP and my
autoplay looks active.
Something happened after installing Nero 6 Ultra with Photo Express.
I have contacted Nero email support and they have no idea what I am talking
about and in fact, don't even know what the Camera and Scanner Wizard is.
They told me it is a "Microsoft" problem.
Now, if I uninstall Nero 6 and reinstall it and NOT install the Photo
Express part, I DO get my Camera and Scanner Wizard back. So how can this be
a "Microsoft" problem?
I like Nero Photo Express AND I like the Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard.
Can I have both?
