- Windows XP Update >> BAD UPDATE breaking update.microsoft.com found...MAYBEI have pasted copies of my previous postingson this subject to this
board below.
Using the method of elimination described, I have found that after
install update:
MSXML 4.0SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
update.microsoft.com would no longer function. I recieved the error
message below. Note: This update also prevented me from using the
update error reporting tool on the update site.
I hope this helps someone.
PS: I don't know where else to report this.

After looking everywhere on the Internet and in the KB, I had the
brilliant idea (OK! So sometimes I'm a little bit slow and backwards)
of using the system restore to go back to before the updates.
It works fine now. I am now using the custom update method (with
restore points in points in between) in an attempt to figure which
caused the problem.
If I figure it out, I'll let you know.

- Windows XP Support >> File & Settings X-fer Wizard - Must DowngradeHi
I re-installed windows xp today, and decided to use the F&STW to make the
change. I saved the wizard data file to the 2nd hard drive on the pc. Then I
reformatted and installed XP on the C drive. I went ot re-install the files
using the wizard, and it says the wizard file was saved with an older F&STW,
and that I need to upgrade the original pc and re-do the transfer! I have
re-formatted that drive, so all I have is the wizard data file; please help -
I need to either find a way to re-install the older F&STW or hack the data
file so it looks like the right format and will work with the new wizard.
I've got lots of data and 5 years of mail in that file - I'd hate to lose it
all due to an "upgrade"...
Standing by for your good advice,

- Windows XP >> This is for people that want to suceed.HOW TO MAKE QUICK CASH IN WEEKS FOR ONLY $6.00!!!!! I
found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A
little while back, I was browsing through news groups,
just like you are now, and came across an article similar
to this that said you can make thousands of dollars
within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00!!
So, I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam," but
like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading.
Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the six
names and addresses stated in the article. You then place
your own name and address in the bottom of the list at
$6.00, and post the article in at least 200 news groups.
(There are thousands) No catch that was it. So after
thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I
thought about trying it. I figured, "What have I got to
lose; except six stamps and $6.00 right, right?" Then I
invested the measly $6.00. WELL GUESS
WHAT!!!...............Within seven days, I started
getting money in the mail!! I was shocked!! I figured it
would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my
first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second
week I had made a total of more than $1000.00!! In the
third week I had more than $10,000.00 and it's still
growing!! This is now my fourth week and I Has made a
total of $42,000.00 and it's still coming rapidly. Its
certainly worth $6.00 and six stamps, but I have spent
more than on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works
and most important, why it works..........also make sure
you print this out NOW, so you can get the information
off of it, as you need it. I promise you that if you
follow the directions exactly that you will start making
more money than you thought possible by doing something
so easy!! Suggestion: Read this entire message
carefully!! (Print it out or download it) Follow the
simple directions and watch the money come in!! It's
easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00
(Plus postage) ! IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off, it is
decent; it's legal; and it is virtually no risk - it
really works!! If all the following instructions are
adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends.
PLEASE NOTE: Please follow the directions EXACTLY, and
$50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This
program remains successful because of the honesty and
integrity of the participants. Please continue its
success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You
will now become apart of the Mail Order business. You are
in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large
corporations are happy to pay bug bucks for quality
lists. However, the money made from the mailing lists is
secondary to income which is made from people like you
and me asking to be included in that list. Here are the
four easy steps to success. STEP one: Get six separate
pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of
paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6
U.S. $1.00 bills and place ONE inside of EACH of the six
pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the
envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in
each of the six envelopes and seal them. You now should
have six sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper
stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a
$1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL!!!!! You are requesting a
legitimate service and you are paying for it!! Like most
of us I was a little skeptical and little worried about
the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the
U.S. Post Office (1-800-125- 2161) and they confirmed
that it is indeed legal!! Mail the six envelopes to the
following addresses: 1) Ms. Heather, 1587 Normal Dr.
Apt.#103, Bowling Green, KY 42101 2) Ric Bishop, Rt 1 box
225 AA, Rich Hill, MO 64779 3) Isaiah Cross, 994 West
Kendal, Corona, CA 91720 4) R.I. De Tienne, 516 36th St.,
Newport Beach, CA 92663 5) Ransom Bishop, Rt 1 Box 204,
Amoret, MO 64722 6) Dustin Borders 1117 Stillhouse rd
Whitehouse tn, 37188 STEP two: Now take the #1 name off
the list that you see above, move the other names up (six
becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, and etc.) and add YOUR NAME as
number 6 on the list. STEP three: Change anything you
need to but try to keep this article as close to original
as possible. Now post your amended article to at least
200 news groups. (I think there are close to 24,000
groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you
post, the more money you make!! This perfectly legal!! If
you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302 & 1341
of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps
for yourself and whenever you need money, you can use it
again, and again. PLEASE REMEMBER that this program
remains successful because of the honesty and integrity
of the participants and by their carefully adhering to
directions. Look at it this way. If you were of
integrity, the program will continue and the money that
so many others have received will come your way. NOTE:
You may want to retain every name and address sent to
you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes
people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly
providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to
wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail
theft). So, as each post is downloaded and the directions
carefully followed, all members will be reimbursed for
their participation as a List Developer with one dollar
each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so
that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be
receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an
opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first
six people listed above) Send it now, add your own name
to the list and you're in business!!! DIRECTIONS FOR HOW
TO POST TO NEWS GROUPS!! STEP one: You do not need to
retype this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply
put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag
your cursor to the bottom of this document, and
select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the
entire letter into the computer's memory. STEP two: Open
a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top
of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'.
This will paste a copy of the letter into the notepad so
that you will add your name to the list. STEP three: Save
your new notepad file as a txt. File. If you want to do
your posting in different settings, you'll always have
this file to go back to. STEP four: Use Netscape or
Internet explorer and try searching for various new
groups (on- line forums, message boards, chat sites,
discussions.) STEP five: Visit these message boards and
post this article as a new message by highlighting the
text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit
menu. Fill in the subject, this will be the header that
everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings
in a particular group, click the post message button.
You're done. You're done with your first one!!
Congratulations..........THAT'S IT!! All you have to do
is jump news groups and post away, after you get the hang
of it, and it will take about 30 seconds for each news
group. ***REMEMBER THE MORE NEWS GROUPS YOU POST IN, THE
MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A
MINIMUM OF 200*** That's it!! You will begin receiving
money from around the world within days!! You may
eventually want to rent a PO Box due to large amounts of
mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you
can invent another name to use, as long as the postman
will deliver it. ***JUST MAKE SURE ALL ADDRESSES ARE
CORRECT*** Now the why part: Assume for example you get a
7.5% return, which is very conservative. 1) When you mail
200 letters, 15 people will send you $1.00 2) Those 15
mails out 200 letters, 225 people will mail you $1.00 3)
Those 225 mails out 200 letters, 3,375 people will mail
you $1.00 4) Those 3,375 mails out 200 letters, 50,625
people will mail you $1.00 5) Those 50,625 mails out 200
letters, 759,375 people will mail you $1.00 By now your
name has dropped off the list, but so far you have
received at least $759,375.00!! With an original
investment of only $6.00!! AMAZING!! When your name is no
longer on the list, you take the latest posting in the
news groups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the
list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start
posting again. You have to remember and realize that
thousands of people all over the world are joining the
Internet and reading these articles every day, JUST LIKE
YOU right now!!! So, you can $6.00 and see if it really
works?? People have said, "What if the plan is played out
and no one sends you the money?" So what!!! What are the
chances of that happening when there are tons of new
honest people who are joining every day and are willing
to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new
users, every day, with thousands of those joining the
actual Internet. Remember, play FAIRLY AND HONESTLY and
this will really work. THANKS

- Windows XP Network >> UPNP command line wrapper?Hello,
I have a couple of programs that don't support upnp which need open
ports in my router firewall (e.g a vnc server and a client in listening
mode). Rather than leave the ports open permanently I was hoping to
create a script that would open the ports via upnp when the program
launches and closes them again when it shuts down.
Is there a command line interface to the windows xp upnp api? I wasn't
able to find any mention of such a thing with several web searches.
Alternatively does anyone know of a wrapper program that can open a set
port range via upnp, launch an application and close the ports again
when the app terminates?
I know it is possible to manually open a port via upnp using the
properties dialog of the "internet gateway" icon which appears in
Network Connections for a upnp enabled router, however it is time
consuming to manually open the port each time I need to launch the vnc
server.
Thanks in advance for any help.

- Windows XP >> Virus Shuts Monitor Off Upon DetectionThe wonderful husband won't stop downloading porn (and I don't even
care about the porn- I told him to get mags instead! Just stop
downloading that crap to my systems, they download virus too!) It's
messed up two computers in the very same way . I have no idea how to
fix them.
If I use Spybot, the moment the search finds the bug it either goes
into a 'fuzzy snow screen' or goes black. If I use any kind of virus
detection software, the moment it's detected, the screen goes black. I
regain the monitor upon reboot. The other computer I have either gives
me a fuzzy illegible or black screen in almost five minutes after boot.
IT seems that this thing starts on upon being detected and then gets
worse.
I am debating whether or not this is the W32Klez virus problem or not.
The description didn't completely fit my problem. I'm going to try
Symantec's fix, but if it doesn't work, DAMN! I have to scrap the whole
drive and start over again (what a pain).
I've checked the Power options and it's interesting to note that the
UPS (Uninteruptible Power Service) has currently been stopped with no
options available for turning it back on. A triangle with the
exclamation appears next to this notice as if the computer is saying
"What the F@#$".
Sorry about the crassness, I'm just upset.
If anyone knows anything about this, please do tell. Thanks!

Windows XP Support >> Hide Past Items
Hello Group.
For the last couple of years I have been using (at regular intervals) a VBS
Script which I got from Kelly's Corner.
It is Hide Past Items which clears up the notification area.
On Thursday I used it and all was fine.
On Sunday night I used it and got the following error message
Script C\ hide past items.vbs
Line: 25
Char: 1
Error: library not registered
Code: 8002801D
Source: (null)
I have neither installed or un-installed any programs.
I never used my computer between Thursday night and Sunday night.
Can any one help me please.

Try each suggestion in order:
1. Download the script again and try it
2. Re-register vbscript.dll
Start, Run, and enter "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" without the quotes
3. Manually clear past items

1 - I had already done that and got the same error message.
2 - I did that and it made no difference. The past items are still there.

John,
Can you post the link to the VBScript that you downloaded. I should be able
to ascertain what is causing the problem.

Thanks for the reply.
1 - I had already done that and got the same error message.
2 - I did that and it made no difference. The past items are still there.
3 - I followed the link. I have the information but I'm not happy about
fiddling with the registry.

Try each suggestion in order:
1. Download the script again and try it
2. Re-register vbscript.dll
Start, Run, and enter "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" without the quotes
3. Manually clear past items

It's trying to connect to a WMI namespace. The error occurs if there is a
problem with WMI components in your system. See if the steps listed under
the topic "Re-registering the WMI components" in the following article
helps.

- customize >> icons text backgroundSorry! THis is really small, but it's really niggling at
me. I've got XP home edition, and when I started the
desktop icon texts had a transparent background. At some
point they've acquired a coloured background that matches
the desktop's (picture-less) colour. The 'guest' account
still has them transparent, but I can't get them back
like it on my main account. I've tried resetting the
desktop theme, and saving the guest account's theme and
loading that, but none of it works. Please help!

do not want to have this website at all and would like to
delete it. Unfortunatley I cannot find out how to get
this site off of my computer. I've tried to restore it
to an earlier date. but it is still there. Also I have
taken previously posted advice and used the websites

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Genuine Validation ToolHi, Just wondering how this new Validation works with the pirated corporate
copies of XP Pro?
Can you purchase a key from Microsoft online for $281 and it will work on
these copies of Pro?
I did one for a new customer last week using change product key from a XP
Pro SP-2 OEM and the key was rejected?
I have a copy of this corporate version running on my virtual pc for testing
purposes and the only thing that would work is doing a repair install and
using the key provided, is there a quicker way?
what is this KeyUpdateTool.exe used for?, I tried using it also and the key
was rejected is there a special key Microsoft provides you that will work?
What annoys me the most is as a system builder, I have had no warning or
information about this from Microsoft.

- Windows XP Support >> HARDWARE PROBLEM - Please help! :(Thanks for looking :)
My old motherboard crashed so I bought a new CPU, MB and memory. I had
a P4 with DDR mem - I got an Intel Dual Core 3.0 MHz, DDR2 mem. All
other periphs were the same -- but now I get the Blue Screen
occasionally telling me I have "hardware problems."
Did I need to do something different to XP Pro to let it know my
hardware is different? It seems to recognize the processor MB amd
memory...
I'm at wit's end - thanks for any and all help!!!!

- Windows XP Hardware >> Hard drive questionI bought a new 120GB hard drive this week so I could copy
my camcorder tapes to DVD's. I noticed that the new drive
is showing 63GB used even though I have deleted the
temporary avi files and there is nothing visible in
Windows Explorer. I have just formatted the drive to
regain the space.
Can anybody tell me why this is happening please.
Thanks

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> internet (virus???) issueImmediately after loading XP on my brand new computer, and
while I was obtaining updates from Microsoft, porno pop-
ups began to appear, specifically,
argvideo.com/tool.html. Answering NO to entering that
website, the site appeared to not respond to my attempts
to navigate from it. My PC can not reach the Microsoft
Update site, and the argvideo site repeatedly points my
browser to it. I have tried Internet Explorer, Mozilla
Firefox and Yahoo Browsers. I have tried reloading
Internet Explorer Browser. While attempting to download
anything, my Prodigy connection shows about a 3- to 10- to
1 ratio of bytes SENT to bytes RECEIVED. This happens
only on this PC. Two other PC's work just fine on the
same account, so the problem is in this PC. I have loaded
Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, but am not able to attain a
connection that will permit registration and updating in
order to help find the bug. I don't want to re-load
Windows unless absolutely necessary.

- Windows XP Security >> Please Hekp: Hard Drive Access DeniedTo Windows SecurityXP,
My computer wouldn't boot up(i run windowsXP) and i had a
company put in a new hard drive(:C) and keep the
remaining hard drive as a backup(:F) All my pictures,
folders, documents are still on the old hard drive and i
can't access them. When i try to get in to driveF, access
is denied. I do know the original passwords of two users,
but that hasn't helped me. the computer fixer said to
create a new user account using the same password as the
original, but this didn't help. All the folders in drive
F say they are empty and access is denied. However, when
I go to DriveF properties, there is disk space used, but
it says read only. Also, almost all the programs that
were orginally in there before,Canon photo printo, HP
printer software, etc... are listed in the computer. I'm
not tech savy at all and i was wondering if anyone can
desperately help me. I just want to retrieve hundreds of
family pictures. Is there a way to retrieve my hard drive
F?
Please help,
DriveFAccess Denied

- Windows XP >> Copying files across network results in corruptionHello,
I have been having an intermittent problem. One workstation has a user
that copies files to another workstation across the network. Most of
the time the files copy okay. But sometimes
they are corrupted. The method that the user is using is to copy the
local file (Ctrl-C), then open up a browser window of the destination
(i.e. start-run- \\computer\c\drivers) then paste (Ctrl-V).
We first started to notice this when the IP address was
manually/statically assigned. I am not sure if this is the true cause.
There are no IP address conflicts. The cabling seems to work fine. The
network card drivers could be the culprit here? It is most likely the
destination computer as this one is the only one known on the network
to have this problem.
Any hints or ideas here?
Thanks.
Mike McWhinney
