- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update Failure Fix!!!I just downloaded the "Dial-a Fix" software v0.60.0.24 located at
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix
I installed it on two different machines and it fixed them both and allowed
the updates to complete.
Download the .exe file. Click on it and just check the following boxes:
1. MSI: Check the Fix Windows Installer. This will also check the 4 boxes
below.
2. WU/WUAU: Check Fix Windows Update. This will also check the 3 boxes below
it and all the SSL/HTTPS/Cryptography boxes.
3.Registeration center: Check all boxes the click 'Go"
It takes about 3 minutes to complete.

- Windows XP >> Restore event on external driveGreetings.
Now that I have a full system restoration program, I was wondering if the
external drive files would be affected. The reason I'm asking is my concern
of files no longer being identified as when I use System Restore feature to
an earlier point. Since System Restore is monitoring all hard drives, plus
external drive, would restoring to an earlier time also affect the external
drive's files? If so, I would think a full system restore would also not
identify files created after that point. I'm reluctant to keep my external
drive on to find out. Thank you.

Kevin

- Windows XP Setup >> How to access another machine's NTFS drive as an external USB driveI've been trying to fix a Win2K machine with disk errors. I thought I
should be able to hook up the drive via an external USB adapter or
enclosure, but I can't get a "handle" on it. I can see the disk in Disk
Management, and it's whirring away. I can even get Ghost to start cloning
it, although it gave up the Ghost (ouch) when it found 64 bad sectors (is
that a lot?).
I'd been told that all I needed to do was take ownership of the drive from
my XP admin account and then set suitable permissions, but the disk hasn't
been allocated a drive letter and I can't find any options other than
removing the partition. Any ideas gratefully received.

- Windows XP Network >> Setting up a network using Win XP Desktop & Win 2K LaptopHi, I am trying to get my Win XP desktop to see files and
share it's connected printer to a Win 2K laptop. I have
a Belkin wireless router that I hooked up directly to my
home PC, running Win XP. I then have a laptop that is
running Win 2K, but it has a wireless card built into it.
I successfully setup the router so that both machines can
connect to the Internet, but the 2 computers can't see
each other. Also, I want the laptop to be able to use
the printer that is connected directly to the home PC.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike R.

- Windows XP Setup >> Finding Sp1/SP2 fileDuring reformatting, I encountered an inconvenience during installation.
After installing WinXP-pro, it took a few days to update. My computer must
connect to Microsoft update site. I have a slow modem. It took forever for
updating WinXP.
If Sp1 and Sp2 files are readily available, I wish to save those files in
my D-drive or CD. In case re-formatting, I can update Windows without
connection to Windows Update site. Could someone tell me where I can
download them? Satoshi

- Windows XP Hardware >> Formatting/Clean Install QuestionI just wiped ME off a friends PC and formatted and tried to do a clean
install of XP Pro.
After formatting.... the screen says that XP could not be installed on this
drive! ????
It also said that I should check to make sure that the drive should be
turned on?
Not sure what all this means.
I have done many clean installs and never had this screen appear.
Is the HD bad?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows XP Setup >> WorkFlow Error
I just got a new Gateway computer and was trying to use
an activation CD for my broadband service. Every time
the program gets to the point of checking system
requirements and tries to check the CPU speed, it hangs
and then gives the Error Reporting Message "WorkFlow
Harness Executable Application has encountered a problem
and needs to close." It also gives the option of sending
the error to Microsoft. I contacted the broadband
provider (Road Runner) and was able to get my internet
and email connections set up without using the CD, but
they said that it was highly unusual to get Error
Reporting messages from a brand new computer and
suggested I contact Gateway. I did that and showed them
the problem, and they said it is a Microsoft problem and
I need to contact them. Microsoft seems to not be so
easy to get direct help from. Actually, I am not having
any system problems as a result of this and I don't see
the error again unless I try to use that CD. What I'm
trying to figure out is if this a systemic problem that I
need to address, and if so how? The other thing I think
is unusual is that if I look into the details of the
error report it says CPU: AMD and that the operating
system is Windows NT 5.1. My computer is a Pentium 4
operating on Windows XP. I don't know much about
Microsoft Error reporting so I'm not sure where it gets
that information from or even if I'm reading it correctly
since I'm not an IT person. Can anyone help?

If your ISP and Microsoft can´t help you I think it will remain a mystery
asto why the error message occured. It could have something to do with the
order in which you installed software, but that´s sheer speculation. I
doubt if anybody can solve the problem with the little information you gave.
A word of advice though. As you managed to get you connection working by
hand, I hope you made a note of all the settings you made for future
reference. If not, you can buy a copy of Norton Ghost or Powerquest Drive
Image, and store an image of your XP partition on CD-R. In the event of a
crash you can restore it to working order, including your Internet
connection, by using that image.
And the error report is correct: Windows XP and Windows NT 5.1 are two names
for the same OS.
Best of luck,
Ben

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> error messagehi. i keep getting an error message that says:
Some files that xp needs to run are missing or corrupted.
please install xp sp1 disk into your disk drive.
retry, more info, cancel keys
when i select more info, it says:
the disk is in the wrong drive or the drive is not
working. ( both wrong)
when i put the disk in and hit retry, the message goes

thanks for any help.

- Windows XP Update >> SP2 Time DelayI'm not sure if people who are posting messages referring to XP slow down are
talking about the same thing but since installing SP2, I get the following
problems on a regular (every 15 minutes or so) basis:
* Select an item and right-click on it - the pop-up menu takes up to 30
seconds to appear
* Select an item and press the 'DEL' key - the 'are you sure you want to
delete this item' dialog takes up to 30 seconds to appear, even for small
files
* Select an item and press 'CTRL-C' - the hour-glass symbols appears for up
to 30 seconds (even on text files < 1kb) and the windows displays "Not
Responding" in the title bar - then after 30 seconds everything continues as
normal
You get the idea!
The system returns to normal after uninstalling SP2, but it's a works
machine and it's a company policy that SP2 should be installed.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP >> Screen Saver on XP EmbeddedI need to change the screensaver settings on 500 thin terminals running
windows xp embedded. I am attempting to do this via a login script
which imports the following registry keys:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control
Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaverIsSecure"="1"
"ScreenSaveTimeOut"="300"
"ScreenSaveActive"="1"
"SCRNSAVE.EXE"="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\logon.scr"
The import is successful, but the screen saver doesn't work unless you
do one of the following:
1. from the display applet in the control panel, goto the screensaver
tab. The settings are grayed out, but they are correct so i know the
import was successful. If i click cancel, it still won't work, if I
click OK without changing anything, it will start working.
2. Log off and log back on and it will start working. Once the
terminal is rebooted, it's back to the beginning as all changes are
wiped out on reboot.
I need to know if anyone is aware of a way to refresh the screensaver
settings from a script after the reg keys are imported.
Thanks...

- Windows XP Network >> Sudden wireless broadband problems??Recently installed a linksys wirelss-G broadband router in my house. Needed a
wireless network receiver on the desktop, so bought a USB 2.0 expansion card
and a USB wireless receiver to plug into it. Amazingly, it all installed
without a hitch. I intstalled the PCI card, plugged in the USB wireless
adapter and plugged in the linksys router to the back of my NTL set top box
and it all worked - for weeks.
Then I started to get the odd occaision where the network connection would
be 'unavailable'. I was able to sort this by unplugging hte USB adapter &
pluggin it back in. XP would recognise it and it would be fine. Now that
doesn't even work.
I know its not the linksys, as my other wirelss PC works fine.
So, how can I figure out if it is the USB wirelss adapter or the PCI USB 2.0
kit or is it XP itself that needs a kick up t eh backside???

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Internet speed and CPU usageMy computer is running OK on Windows XP, but I have a
problem with the time it takes for a windows page to come
up. In have DSL service. When I open Windows explorer
and each time I move from one page to the next, the
computer runs at a speed well below that of dial-up
service. My ISP has worked with me and has run tests
that show that there is no problem with their service in
terms of the speed of data to my computer. When I move
from one page to the next, The CPU Usage graph in Windows
Task Manager flat lines on 100% until the next page comes
up. It can take as much as a couple of minutes for me to
move from one page to the next. Has anyone run into this
problem and if you have, what was your solution. My
computer is a 1.6 mhz Pentium IV running Windows XP home.

- Windows XP Network >> network access questionI want to be clear about this password to access workgroup computers and
folders/files.
My understanding is this:
I create a user for the workgroup computers that exists on the computer
trying to acess these files......this profile name has the SAME password or
am i not able to duplicate passwords?
For example, if userone wants to access computers 2 and 3 in the workgroup,
does username need the same name (userone) on all other machines and have the
same password or same name but different password?
I'm not 100% clear on this and want to get the right advice. Thanks.
