- Windows XP >> Win XP Home machine in a SBS 2003 officeI have a single computer running Windows XP Home in an office of XP
Pro boxes hooked to a SBS 2003 server. The only purpose for this
computer was to gather GPS data from company trucks using RF. I get
the data remotely using a script in a remote control program that
connects in the middle of the night.
The problems started when the boss asked me to also get billing data,
and that data sits on the server. No problem connecting to the server.
No problem mapping a drive letter to the folder where the billing data
sits. No problems transferring the data manually.
But after a period of inactivity, say for a few hours, the XP Home
machine seems to log out and lose it's drive mapping. Then the script
that transfers the files fails.
I've set it to not go into standby. No screen saver is set. The "power
scheme" is set to always on. But since I need to lock the workstation
so no one accesses it I do it with the following shortcut...
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
Any ideas on how I could force this machine to retain it's drive
mapping?

- Windows XP >> Font size, Grammer check, ScannerThe default font size is set at 10 and I would like to
change the default size to 12. How do I do that?
My spell check is working fine but my grammer check is not
working at all. How can I fix that?
When I download my Visioneer scanner, my printer stops
working. Then I have to uninstall the scanner and
reinstall the printer. I think the scanner and printer are
trying to share the same location. How do I name a
separate folder/location for the scanner only?
There's a special place in heaven for anyone who can help me.

"Scan with a CD icon" next it says "Please wait while Windows configures
Scan" I am then asked to put in CD-Rom but it doesn't say which cd.....I
have gone to do another clean boot.....I have put the restore discs in (there
are 2) but they only go a certain distance and nothing happens.....Where have
I gone wrong. I did phone Microsoft but they wanted $80 to give me advice
and unfortunately I don't have that money at the moment so am relying on help

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> old .NET service packs and virus scanner options.Hello,
Recently I have been trying to make some tweaks to my computer to better run
some of Valve's latest games, TF2 etc. Which brings me to these questions:
While removing unused applications and outdated items to make room for the
Source SDK tools and other thirdparty tools I noticed that there are lots of
old .NET framework files. Everything from Microsoft .NET Framwork 1.1 to 2.0.
I already have the Framework for 3.0 and 3.5, can I uninstall these old
frameworks? (I dont actually use them anymore or any Visual studio
applications using .NET2.0 and back)
There is also a suspicious item in add/remove called PrismPatch.exe - does
anyone have an idea what it is?
And for my last question, does anyone have any recommended free antivirus
scanners besides AvG? (AvG, Norton, and NOD32, and that other one that starts
with a K are known to cause problems with the Source engine)
Thank you.

- Windows XP Security >> The page cannot be displayed messageSince connecting the Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router
to my home computer, I've been unable to access my web-
based email or run windows update. I keep getting "The
page cannot be displayed" message. I've contacted my ISP
and Linksys and neither was able to pinpoint or solve the
problem. Even after disconnecting the router, I am still
no longer able to access these particular pages. My ISP
even took remote control of my computer and still could
not figure out what was causing the problem. I'm running
Windows XP Professional. If anyone has encountered this
problem before and gotten it resolved, I would appreciate
your sharing this information with me. I'm very
frustrated and welcome any help I can get.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> What's MSWMM and WMVI'm using WinMovieMaker, wondered if someone could help with the following
newbie questions...
--------------
( )T ( )F. When creating a movie in WinMoveMaker, it always creates two
files, like...
-JanesBirthday.MSWMM (a project file with lots of photo/mpeg/etc. LINKS),
and
-JanesBirthday.AllisVideoHello.WMV (a flat file, ready to play, even if the
links, pictures, mpgs, etc. used to create it are subsequently deleted)
--------------
( )T ( )F. If you create a project file like BillsParty.MSWMM and link
things like jpgs, mpgs, and other files to it....then move these source jpgs
and files to new locations, or rename them... well, your movie falls
apart...you'd have to one by one "re-connect" the source files inside of
BillsPart.MSWMM
(Is there any way around this, or any way to make this easier?)

- Windows XP Setup >> laptop power switchover: common feature?Since my company selected my laptop for me (with
MSWin XP Pro SP2), I do not know which features
are common among all laptops and which features I
need to ask about when I purchase my own laptop.
I am particularly interested in the laptop power
switchover. With my current laptop, I can switch
between AC and battery simply by plugging in and
unplugging the AC connector at any time. The power
switchover does not affect any running applications,
networking (esp. wireless), or Windows.
(By default, the screen brightness is reduced when
I run on battery. But I can override that.)
Is that feature common to all laptops (running MSWin
XP SP2 or later)? Or with some laptops, do I need
to do one or more of the following: (a) exit
applications first; (b) log out first; (c) restart
Windows; and/or (d) power off and on the computer?
Does it differ depending on whether I have XP Home
or XP Pro?
If it is not a standard feature for everything and
I need to ask about it, what do I call that feature?
I would call it "seamless power source switchover".
But that's just me.

I had some crap in msconfig startup such as:

I deleted them out of the registry, but it did not help any.
Any time I try to install anything to clean it up it shuts it down. I even
triued Windows Defender and it shut it down. I tried safemode but could do
nothing.
I can run Adaware & spybot but they say everything is okay. I try to run AVG
anf it tries to open but closes right away.
Some services disable each time I reboot so I cannot run Windows Update
either.
Automatic Updates
ClipBook {wont start either]

Windows Firewall/ICS [Cannot open the properties to change it to manual or

Any ideas will be gratefully appreciated

Windows XP Update >> Message: Unable to sucessfully install 4 Updates
I would suggest trying to install these updates ONE-at-a-time.
You could be having issues installing the .NET Framework v2.0 (that update
ought to be coded as an exclusive update, anyway), because of a pre-existing
.NET Framework v2.0 beta edition.
You could be having issues installing KB891122 if you don't have an
WMDRM-enabled Media Player installed.
You could be having issues installing the MSRT.
You could be experiencing more than one issue, which will require several
different steps to resolve.
If you discover the MSRT is not installing, then follow up with Matt
Braverman, per his request posted earlier this morning:
Can you please send me a mail at EMail@HideDomain.com ? I'd like to
follow-up with you to investigate this issue ASAP.
Thanks,

Windows XP Update >> Message: Unable to sucessfully install 4 Updates
I'm trying to install just one update, KB896424 (Se urity Update). Automatic
Updates gives "Updates were unable to be successfully installed." Windows
Update
update history status window says
"Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x80070005"
Hope you can help resolve this. I have XP Pro and I can use the registry
editor but I am not high-powered NT administrator type.

Are you logged onto your XP Pro system as the /Administrator/?
The 0x80070005 message is an "Access Denied" message and usually indicates
that the account attempting to install an update does not have the necessary
permissions.

files on his old hard drive, which has XP Pro service pack 2 on it. I
connected the hard drive to my system, which also has XP Pro service pack 2,
and set it up as a slave. The drive was recognized with no problem. I
copied the contents of the drive to a briefcase on my hard drive, and then
attempted to reformat the slave drive so I could put the files back on it,
minus the OS. There was a FAT32 system on the slave drive, which Windows
would not allow me to format or delete. My system froze, so I rebooted it,
and windows would no longer load, instead I got the BSOD. I attempted to do
a repair of Windows, using my installation cd, but was prompted that there
are files missing and that setup would be shutting down, which it did. I
have no idea why this would have happened, and anyone who might be able to
suggest a fix would be my new hero...

- Windows XP Setup >> XP home install hangs near the endOkay, here's the problem I am encountering. I am upgrading to XP home from Win98. I run the setup from the CD and choose to upgrade. It runs fine for the most part up until the end. I run into one issue that doesn't halt the installation but does confuse me. I get a message saying that something hasn't passed XP seal or whatever that is. The weird thing here is that where it seems like it should tell me what device/program the problem is, it is completely blank there and it gives me no information about what the problem is. I have clicked both yes and no for this error and it continues fine. It goes fine until it starts the first part of the finalization, upgrading programs and system info. It barely starts that, and it just hangs there at about 20 minutes to go. I've let it sit there for over 30 minutes just in case that was the problem, but it did nothing. It just sat there at the same point and it didn't give me any sort of error message whatsoever.
I've scoured the support knowledge base and tried many suggestions there and none have worked. I've removed a good deal of software and hardware from my machine and it still hangs at the same point. Any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate.

will come up saying, play all or selection. I know that it will be something
to do with the settings but I'm not sure which settings and where.
I have been told to;
Right click on folder
Properties
Customize
Select the kind of folder
When I go to properties there is no customize. Under general there is all
the standard settings, like read-only and everything and how many mb are in
the folder. There is also a sharing folder so then you can share the
contents, which I don't quite understand and at the moment I donâ??t need to.
If I go to my music or my video's there is no customize bit either. When I go
to another folder's properties there is, a customize so you can select the
type of folder I would like.
If I go into the My Pictures folder through;
My computer
Documents & Settings
User Name
My Documents
My Pictures
It all seems to work fine and it thinks that itâ??s a picture folder. There
are a lot of shortcuts to My Pictures which is what I mainly use and these
donâ??t work. Here it keeps thinking itâ??s a music folder. If you go onto a My
Documents folder through and shortcut including the desktop it also thinks
here that it is a music folder. What has gone wrong and where in the settings
seen as itâ??s only some of the settings now seen as it can work through My
Computer ectâ?¦
Please help.
Thanks
