- Windows XP Hardware >> Monitor turning stand-byHi,
I was using my PC, this morning, and the monitor turned standy by for
some seconds and then turned on again on its own but no picture was
visible. To view something on my screen I had to reboot my machine.
This problem occured to me twice a couple of months ago, and using a
different monitor. Also when this occured in the previous months, it
only occured a couple of minutes after I switched the pc, then I would
reboot it and leave running for about 10hrs and no problem occurs.
What could the problem caused by, monitor, graphics card, motherboard,
or something else.
Can someone help me out
Thanks in Advance

- Windows XP Network >> Connects to Internet... But Cannot Ping, Browse, etc.I'm able to establish a connection to my ISP using a dial-
up w/ internal modem. However, I can't seem to take any
outgoing actions (ping, browse web, etc). For example,
ping 'cannot establish connection' and IE 6 gives me a DNS
error. Considering all was fine before upgrading (and
suggested patches), I'm not entirely sure where to start
looking. Any suggestions?
thanks.

yesterday I've downloaded Skype, and after installing it, I couldn't access
the Internet anymore. I don't think it's Skype, but I don't know. I've tried
renewing my ipconfig, checked my settings, ... Only when I turn off my Norton
personal firewall, I can access the internet.
Now, how can i access the internet with my Norton Pers. firewall active? I
always have it on, and all of the sudden it doesn't work anymore??
If you can help, please do so...

- Windows XP Setup >> Outlook Express "ask before opening" attachments goneI installed Windows XP Pro on my PC last week. I've been
using Outlook Express for E-mail and as a news reader.
I got annoyed by OE6 always asking me if I wanted to Open or
Save file attachments such as JPG pictures so I unchecked the
"Always ask before opening files of this type" box.
Now, I've changed my mind and want the option to Open or Save
back again but I cannot find a setting in OE6 Options that
will turn on the "Always ask before opening files of this
type" again.
Please advise how I can do this. Thank you.

- Windows XP >> Problems deleteing items from the recycle binHi,
Whenever i try to delete everything from my bin it tells
me one of the files is "in use by another program" (no
other programs are open). The only way i can delete the
contents of the bin is to delete the files in small
portions (which takes forever). Is there a fix for this
problem or do i have to reduce the capacity of the bin?
cheers,

- Windows XP Setup >> XP repairI have been trying to repair XP booting up from the Windows CD. First time
round, it appeared to work, except that the computer froze up after a few
minutes. I tried to repair again, and now find that it gets stuck. It
completes 'copying files to the Windows Installation', restarts, goes through
the first stage of Windows start-up. The screen goes blank, and then it
stops. I have left it overnight with no success. I now have effectively a
dead computer. Help!

- Windows XP Update >> Internet Explorer automatically opens Windows Update siteWe have seen a few instances with XP where a user runs IE, and instead of
getting their normal homepage, the Windows Update site opens. We have
Automatic Updates turned off by Domain Group Policy, and the PC settings

homepage menu button, they go to their correct homepage. This odd IE
behavior may or may not return the next time they run it.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> the tweak ui "New" tab disappeared!Hi.
Strangely, the "New" tab is no longer available when I open the TweakUI...
I tried to uninstall the app using "Add/Remove programs", but it says that
it was already uninstalled - so I removed its entry from "Add/Remove
programs". After this I just deleted the .CPL entry from C:\WINDOWS\system32,
and made a search to remove all the files named "tweakui" from the computer.
I cleaned the registry with a specific program and re-booted.
Then I re-installed TweakUI, but the problem persists: the tab "New" is gone.
Am I missing something?
This trouble is annoying, because there are some filetypes that I can't
create anymore from right click -> new, and I can't edit this setting anymore.
Can someone please help?
Thanks is advance!

simple about it is how flabbergasted i am. I have several

cant delete them. I have auto delete, so it doesnt send
anything to the rec bin, so i click delete on file.rar
and it claims it's being used by another program even
though it's not. i even rebooted, and i got the same

avail. how do i get rid of these files without
reformatting? please help ^^

Well what the relation with the party with History anyway?.
Try to run Disk cleanUp in Safe mode, on how to do that try to press or Tap
the F8 on Boot up and you will get the Boot up option select safe Mode and do
the clean Up Disk there and clear the History too.
If still try to download this tool but be careful with what you are deleting:
http://www.purgeie.com/delinv/index.htm
Delete the Temp files and History by this tool.
Also try to scan for malwars on the machine by downloading this utility:
http://www.safer-networking.org for Spybot S&D
HTH.
Let us know.

On the browser itself, have her try the following:
Tools-> Browser Options->General->History

I meant to say on the browser itself, she doesn't have tools. She can get
to a place that should allow her to delete history, but it is grayed out.

The only other suggestions I have are to try Control-H or perhaps search
for the Yahoo Browser history folder using Windows Explorer and then
delete the entries manually. Personally, I would just uninstall that
dang browser and use IE, Firefox, or Opera; at least these browsers
don't have you jumping through hoops to perform simple operations.
One last idea: Ccleaner, which is normally excellent at deleting temp
files, history entries, etc. You can find it at http://www.ccleaner.com/
.

What exactly is it that she can't clear? Is it the automatic text that comes
up when you type into the address bar? If so, just highlight the text and
hit delete on the keyboard.

- customize >> xp style is goneOk, I've tried almost everything what I found here, browsed through
all these (and similar) ''No Windows XP Style Appearance'' topics ,and
tried suggested solutions, read most of kellyscorner and downloaded
stuff- but still no xp style for my windows and buttons.
My start menu is ''shaped'' in xp style, but start icon is not, also ,
all windows and buttons are in classical style.
When I click on desktop >properties>themes>windows xp....it just changes
my desktop picture, but the rest of it stays the same, when I click
desktop >properties>appearance> ....there is no windows xp style. Now
there's no classical2!Windows and buttons are grayed
p.s.One question-should this box be checked, when I run
services.msc ,under Themes>properties>log on>allow service to interact
with desktop?does this has to do with it?
Please, is there solution, I really want my xp style back.
Thanx in advance.

- Windows XP Support >> Registry issuesLast night, I was very low on disk space. I decided to delete some programs
that I didn't need anymore. Through control panel, I deleted things like .net
framework, a music program, quicktime, and some other things. I noticed at
one point my desktop do some kind of motion, but I ignored it. I restarted my
computer and logged back on to find I couldn't use the internet explorer
button and it was missing and some other shortcuts. I did a system restore
and I was able to get them back.
I updated a few programs on my computer that needed to be upgraded. I tried
to download Adobe Reader 7.0.8 and the flash player 9, photoshop trial and I
kept have registry problems. I downloaded some registry cleaners to try, and
it helped solve another problem I had prior to this with a pestrap situation.
But it didn't help my installation problems. Now, certain things I can't
install because of a HKEY problem. I tried to delete the value/key, but it
wont let me and some keys it cannot open. I installed Windows OneLive Care to
see if it could clean up any viruses etc.. and it hasn't helped and now I
can't delete it. I keep clicking remove and nothing happens. And now when I
use the internet, some images don't display.
What can I do?

- Windows XP >> Is there a utility for backing up all data including Favorites, Address book, & email in preparation for new C harddisk.I received a message at boot time that the Dell Disk Monitor noticed that
"my hard disk is operating outside the normal specifications, and it is
advisable to immediately back up all data and replace my hard drive."
Is there a utility for backing up all data including favorites, address
book, and email folders. I believe I read about one in a Microsoft
Newsletter sometime in the past year. Actually, I believe I have backed up
just about all data except the Explorer Favorites and Outlook email folders
and I don't know how to find them. If there is a utility available, maybe
it might back up these and some other folders I have forgotten.
Also, is there a way to backup XP and all programs for restore on a new hard

- Windows XP Setup >> Opening FoldersOn my laptop when I try to open folders instead of them opening up I get a
search box. For example, when I double click "My Computer" it shows me what
is on my computer, but when I double click "Local Disk (C:)" I get the
typical search window instead of a list of what's on my hard drive. When I
right click Local Disk (C:) I get a list of options. I noticed the first
option is "Search" instead of "Open". So I have to right click every time
and scroll down to open. The crazy thing is it didn't always do this. But I
don't know what I could have done to cause this and I can't figure out how to
fix it. I have a Toshiba Laptop with some proprietary controls and programs
