- Windows XP Support >> Desktop and taskbar hide and reappear.I did a clean install of XP (went well) but now my desktop and taskbar
disappear when I'm not moving around on it. It comes back as soon as I move
my mouse, but I find it very annoying. The taskbar autohide is NOT checked
and I can't figure out why it's doing it. Any suggestions would be much
appreciated.

- Windows XP Basic >> Unable to reset Read Only on files/foldersI have a few data folders and files (not program files) on which I seem
unable to reset the "Read Only" attribute.
To reset I right-click on the file and then click on Properties. The first
thing I see is a green rectangle to the to the left of "Read Only." I click
on the green rectangle to remove it from the check box, then click on
"apply" and then on "OK."
When I return to the Properties of that file, the green square is back and
the file
is still "read only."
Can anyone tell me what might be going on?
Thanks

- Windows XP Hardware >> Graphic Problems-No DisplayI have a strange problem. A friend was using my computer and while messing
around, he deleted the graphic card I was using. Now, the PC and windows
seems to start fine but once windows xp kicks in, everything goes black. I
can see the HD light working so I know things are going on in there, but I
just can't see anything. I've attempted using different cards in there(all
same family, diff. models) but have the same problem. Is there a solution to
this problem or is it time for me to upgrade?

- Windows XP Network >> strange dns problemI have an XP workstation that will not resolve the IP
addresses of search engines correctly. For example I
can't go to search.msn.com, www.google.com,
www.lycos.com, etc. If I try to ping any of these, I get
the same address for all of them. 207.44.194.56. If I
do an nslookup for any of them I get the correct address.
I have tried using different DNS servers in the network
setup, and have checked the hosts file. Other computers
on the same network using DHCP do not have this problem.
I have run "ipconfig /flushdns" and get the same result.
If I clear the dnscache using the above command and then
do a "ipconfig /displaydns" I get a long list of the
search engines all with 207.44.194.56 as the A record. I
have run "net stop dnscache" and still get the same
results when trying to connect to the web site or ping.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> XP and WORD - Won't follow HyperlinkI am using XP Pro on my Thinkpad, and when using WORD 2003
and you come across a hyperlink, normally you hold the CNTL key
down and click on the mouse, and it will display/take you to the link.
However, with XP it gives an error message, displaying the link
and saying it can't find the server. I'm pretty sure it's not
connecting to the Internet. I wonder if anyone else has had this
problem, or is it just my machine? Any suggestions?
Thank you.

Can I sort it with my boot-up disks and if so how?

- Windows XP >> DVD writer not recognisedThis is driving me crazy. I'm running XP with 2 hard drives as IDE Primary
Master and Secondary Master. I've had a DVD writer running as Primary Slave
until it died. I installed a new LG DVD writer as Primary Slave and for a
while it worked fine. Then I got all kinds of problems with any of the drives
or the writer not being recognised, PC locking up on the Windows XP screen,
restarting itself, all kinds of issues. I discovered that by removing the LG
drive everything booted up OK. Then I tried putting the LG drive as Primary
Master, and the 2 hard drives on the secondary IDE, and everything was
sorted! For 48 hours....
After numerous uses of the PC with no problem, the problem has come back. On
boot up, the DVD writer is not detected, and when the PC eventually boots
fully, I cannot access it.
I am at my wits end. The LG drive has been reported on the net as having
some issues with being recognised, but the problem is intermittent.
ANY help appreciated!

Windows XP >> dvd rw
Is this of assistance?
Check the properties of the CD Burner drive and click on the recording tab. If
the check mark to enable recording is checked, uncheck it and hit apply and then
recheck it and hit apply.
If not check this site out:

DVD writeable disks come in two flavors - 'minus' and 'plus' (DVD-RW and
DVD+RW). You must be using the type which your drive understands.
Although there are dual mode DVD burner drives, I don't think a laptop
will have come with one

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> "Professional" doesn't display at startupSome time after installing XP SP2 I've noticed that the word Professional

know if it's significant, but I've learned to be (at least) suspicious when I

that's unrelated. Any ideas?

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Saving in MP3My daughter is working on a video for one of her Middle School classes.
(Yes, *I* am helping *her*, instead of the other way around!) We've got the

PCs are Macs, and won't play a WMV file. Can the movie be saved in MP3
format? If not, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this

- Windows XP Support >> How to install Windows MCE to a new PC which has only SATA hdI'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times already but my search
of the newsgroups does not come with anything recent.
I have just bought an ASUS Pundit barebones PC and a WD Caviar 250gig SATA
drive to go with it.
I am intending to install Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005 onto it.
The Pundit has the SATA drive installed, a DVD writer but it does not have a
floppy drive and there is no connector to connect one to.
I have seen in other posts that in order to install XP to a SATA drive you
have to press F6 during the install process and install SATA drivers.
I have checked the WD website but can't find any SATA drivers, I've also
checked the Asus website with the same result. There is a driver CD with the
Pundit but I've searched that and the nearest thing I can find there
is a SATA raid controller driver ( strange because the Pundit does not have
raid capability, it can only take a single HD ! )
Can anyone offer help here ?
