- Windows XP Setup >> CD-RW discI understand thath a CD-RW disc lets you write to it (copy files onto it) in
multiple sittings. My question is -- After burning a doc. from
WordPerfect(R)11 onto a CD-RW disc. Can you go back to the doc. off the disc,
make changes to it and overwrite the original information without saving it
under another name??? Just save the changes. If so how ???????
Thanks in advance for your help

- Windows XP Setup >> Windows Update for FriendsMay I download and save to a CD Critical Windows Updates
for friends that do not have a broadband connection to
the internet or do they have to be connected themselves
in order to update their system? If I can, any
suggestions on how to do this. The update webpage I get
while online does not offer an option to save to a file,
it only downloads then installs. Any help will be
appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Windows Firewall/ICS Service will not startEver since I unistalled Norton Personal Firewall for some reason my Windows
Firewall would not start. Then i read the error message it gave me: We're
sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. To try turning
on the firwall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the
Windows Firewall dialog General tab, select On (recommended) and click OK.
But the problem is when i try to do this it gives me a new message that says:
Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service
is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Conection
Sharing (ICS) service? When i click yes it says: Windows cannot start the
Windows Firewall/Internet Conection Sharing (ICS) service. So then i even
went into Adminstrative Tools and then looked at the Services. Whenever i
found the Windows Firewall/Internet Conection Sharing (ICS) service I tried
to start it and it said in yet another message: Could not start the Windows
Firewall/Internet Conection Sharing (ICS) service on Local Computer. Error
10047: An address incompatible with the requested protocol was used.
Any ideas on how to fix it? It's annoying having to see the dang Message
Bubble everytime I start my computer and the icon staying.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Start Up TasksOkay, you know how in Windows 98, in system information, you could select the programs you want/don't want to run when you start up by clicking on a check box? Is there one for Windows XP? If so, where?

- Windows XP Hardware >> mainboard queryHi,
My PC has died on me, and I only bought it a few months ago. I was getting
long single beeps and tried to test the RAM , but I think I've compounded
the problem now. I bent a capacitor with too much force and also the battery
doesn't fit back into place securely anymore. Now the fan and drives fire up
but no video. (FIC P4M-800T motherboard)
My question, if I want a good quality motherboard to replace my old and
possibly rebuild this thing from its partsh . What should I be looking for?
I have a P4 chip with HT and I plan to use my ATI graphics card . I will
probably need to replace my memory too with
Or is there a possibility that my motherboard can still be fixed and how?

- Windows XP Support >> Fonts missing in Windows XP desktop propertiesHi,
I'm running Windows XP Pro and I'm having a problem with fonts.
I have dozens of fonts installed, and they show up in c:\windows\fonts
folder, and in applications like MS Office, Notepad, Wordpad, charmap, etc.
However, if I right-click on the desktop, select Properties, then Appearance
tab, then click on the Advance button, only 5 fonts show up in the font list
for various GUI elements like menus and windows title bars.
How do I make the other fonts available for GUI elements ?
Thanks.

- Windows XP Network >> Dial up networking not being establishedHi all,
I have a problem with my HP laptop running on XP
professional. I am unable to establish any sort of a dial

I mean, it detects my modems correctly ( when i use either
my Nokia USB modem, or my Agere 56K) and there is a
connection established in my taskbar. But there is no data
transfer, and data sending freezes after the initial
connection
Can somebody please help me, as I am unable to use my

- Windows XP >> Goback 3.0I have read in many reviews for Goback 3.0 that it permits installation onto
several hard drives on one computer. I have tried many times to reinstall
Goback in the hope it will allow me to protect the extra hard drive I have
installed although at no time during the custom install does it prompt me
for protection of the second drive. Could anyone confirm that Goback 3.0 is
able to protect multiple drives in Win XP, or suggest any ways that I might
be able to fix this problem?
Many thanks

Windows XP >> Maximum number of open windows?
I heard somewhere that Win XP has a max of 17 or 19 open windows. Is this
true? Can it be changed through settings?
I keep running out of browser windows. Sometimes, if I have two or three
apps running (like Notes, Outlook and Dreamweaver), I can only open 4 or 5
brower windows in IE. After that, there is no right click menu any more, or
nothing happens when you click "open in a new window".
The PC is a 3.5 GHz P4 with 1GB of ram, so that should not be a limitation.
I am running Windows XP Professional SP2 in a corporate network with machine
admin rights.
Can anyone throw any light on this limitation?

Sounds like other problems - I would recommend a thorough maintenance on the
machine.. Update drivers, software patches, check for adware/spyware with
several apps, check for viruses with an online AV software, CHKDSK,
uninstall unused applications, turn off unused services and defragment.
> Can anyone throw any light on this limitation?
There is no limitation like that. If you are experiencing an issue like
this (although you really shouldn't that often.. 17-19 open Windows and you
probably are not even referring to 5 or more at that point anymore. heh) -
you need to look into possible other issues the machine may have or the
applications you are using. You might be running software (like some
anti-everything suite that uses up too many resources, or some bloated
software that eats up half your ram, etc.)

Windows XP >> Maximum number of open windows?
Thanks for the detailed reply. I don't have a lot of control over antivirus
and other security software as I am inside a government agency network with a
standard operating environment. Patches are also centrally controlled.
As for the windows that are open, I am a web developer and team manager, so
I typically have Outlook (1 window), Lotus Notes (1 window), Dreamweaver (1
window), Windows Explorer (1 or 2 windows), Internet Explorer (1 to view WIP,
several for researching) and Firefox (1 to view WIP). So that's about 10 if I
am not too busy. But yes, sometimes I get lazy or have to flick between many
tasks and it can be a lot higher.
I will refer it to our tech support and hope they don't reimage my hard
disk. That's what they do to users with local admin privileges when they
complain...

I'm not aware of any such limitations.
You may wish to look at Avant or Maxthon (or wait for IE7) which will give you multiple IE windows with tabs.
I've been using Avant for a few years and love it. <http://www.avantbrowser.com/>

Windows XP >> Maximum number of open windows?
I have experienced the exact same issue on a number of computers. At
work, I have 2-3 Visual Studio's, Outlook, Opera, Remote Desktops, SQL
EntMan, and MSN messenger and I can only have 6-7 IE's open before I
start loosing my menu and such.
Earlier in the year, I had the exact same problem on my home PC, and I
was able to correct it by changing a registry key.. however I cannot
remember which one it was and google is not helping... (when I did find
it, it was on around the 12th page of the search)
It is not a spyware, viral or driver issue. My work PC was freshly
installed on a Friday, turned off and on the Monday I turned it on and
it was experiencing the issue immediately. I have tried to do registry
compares between both machines, but nothing has jumped out.
If I could install IE7 at work, I would, but I need IE6 to ensure as
that is the required browser for the product we develop.

Windows XP >> Maximum number of open windows?
I found it just now, I have been searching for 5 weeks now... not long
after my last post...

>From the /. posting...
To tweak the limit, take a look in the registry at
HLKM/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Session Manager/SubSystems -
there is a key called "Windows" that contains (among other things)
"SharedSection=1024,3072". Changing the SharedSection entry to
"1024,3072,512" increases the size of the "hidden" desktop heap. If
that doesn't work, try increasing the second of the comma delimited
values (e.g. 3072 -> 4096), which is the size limit of any particular
desktop heap

Windows XP >> Maximum number of open windows?
That's sort of what I had heard. The value in my XP registry at home is:
%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows
SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows
ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3
ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off
MaxRequestThreads=16
I have to wait until Monday to see what the work PC looks like. I am
wondering what the MaxRequestThreads value is about.

Windows XP >> Maximum number of open windows?
TonyG,
Here is the registries on my systems:
PC at work prior to fixing (the fresh install):
%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows
SharedSection=1024,3072,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows
ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3
ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off
MaxRequestThreads=16
PC at home (with fix) and work PC now:
%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows
SharedSection=1024,4096,512 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows
ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3
ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off
MaxRequestThreads=16
Luckily I have a VPN to work so I was able to Remote Desktop in and
make the change and test it. Increasing the heap to 4096 has fixed the
issue at work.. I am finally able to have some more productivity. It
will be great to actually be able to test the software without having
everything die on you.
I am not sure if changing the MaxRequestThreads would help..

- Windows XP >> How to Uninstall XP from a partitionI have somehow accidentaly installed XP Pro on a partition instead of overwriting it on my C drive. I have done a clean install on C drive and would now like to UNINSTALL from other partitioned drive. how do i go about doing this without causing major troubles on my computer?
Also, when it installed to partition, it somehow deleted my .boe file from Outlook express Backup file. gone. Is it possible that this will somehow miraculously return upon uninstall?
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> MSDOS -- "TREE|MORE"I use the command:
C:\Docs and Settings\user\My Documents\> TREE|MORE
and, of course, my tree wonderfully appears; and I know the "enter" and the
"spacebar" I use to scroll down one space or one page.
QUESTION: HOW DO I SCROLL TO THE END OF THE DATA SET???
Thank you,

- Windows XP Support >> iTunesThere is a file in C:\documents and settings\all users\start
menu\programs\startup named gjzp.exe. This file prevents iTunes and
Quicktime from loading. It can not be seen or accessed from explorer. From
a command prompt I can delete it. When I start my computer from MSCONFIG
with selective startup and this not loaded, everything works fine. After a
normal restart the file reappears. Does anyone know what program creates it?

- Windows XP Network >> How a costomized DHCP paket can be sent form 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255?Hello:
I need to simulate the process of DHCP client, by following steps:
1. Excute ipconfig /release
2. Send a costomized DISCOVER packet(which is totally equal to the
packet from ipconfig command ) from 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255
3. Language : C# , call System.Net.Socket.UdpClient to send the
packet.
Error: Host Unreachable. But the packet form ipconfig can be sent to the
network.
If I set a magic IP address 192.168.0.23 before step2, my packet can be sent
and the OFFER form DHCP Server can be received.
Did I miss something or made some mistakes?
Thank you very much!

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> switching users causes app problemsWhen trying to run a program under a power user vs
administrator, the program will not run under the power
user. When adding administrator to the same logon it
works fine. I need it to run under a user without
opening up to administrator. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

- Windows XP >> toshiba laptop keyboardHello, I posted yesterday and someone replied and I'd like to thank them for the help first of all. They said I could probably get better advice if I had my computer specs, so I have them now. I have a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 with a pentium 4 processor. This is my problem: When my computer is connected to the internet my enter key will work fine for an average of 10-15 minutes, but will then stop responding when the key is pressed (this does not only affect my internet browser and related online features, but other programs on my computer such as microsoft word as well). This problem does not seem to happen if the computer is not connected to the internet. I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling my keyboard driver, setting my computer's settings back to a day before the problem first began, and lastly I wiped the hard drive and started over from the recovery disk...the problem still exists though and I am clueless. Any insight into this problem would, again, be much appreciated...I hope the specs will be of some help this time. Thank You.

- Windows XP Network >> forwarding a range of ports [ICS]I have two computers networked to share an dsl connection using a crossover
cable. I want to be able to forward UDP ports 1024-65535 to the client
computer, but XP's builtin port forwarding apparently only allows you to
forward individual ports rather than a range of ports. Is there a third party
program, or maybe a registry hack that will do this? Or do I need to find a
hardware solution?

- Windows XP Update >> IE6 SP1 Will not update using WinUpdateHelp me pleaseâ?¦
I have a Win2K Server SP4 and cannot get it to install IE6 SP1. I have
tried installing via the windows update but the fails with the message â??Setup
was unable to download the required components. Please make sure you are
connected to the internet, or try to run Setup again later.â??
I then downloaded a full admin install of IE6 SP1, thinking it may be better
to install it this way, but when it get a little way in it tells me that
â??Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all
applications and try running Setup again.
I have full admin rights on the Server.
I am putting the server into Install Mode (terminal).
Anti Virus is Disabled (Sophos).
No programs are running.
I have successfully done this on my other 5 Servers
Please help :-)
