- Windows XP Hardware >> COMM port not shutting downWin XP Home SP 1 Dell inspiron I5100 2.66G 512 M BCM V.92 56K Modem
Thank you for taking a moment to help me ... I think this question should be
an easy one .. :)
While online, dial-up, the modem or connection goes offline. Then in an
attempt to re-connect, I get the error that the port is in use .. this never
goes away, regardless of how many times I try or periods of 'wait' I provide.
Windows Troubleshooter wanted me to check the settings for PORTS under
Device Manager, but I do not have such a setting there.
How do I reset that port without having to restart the machine, or can I?
If I cannot, what are the likley causes of this so I can try to fix and or
prevent it?
Thank you.

- Windows XP >> XP reference book recommendationsI am looking for a reference book for windows XP. I am reasonably
knowledgeable on windows but the security aspect of XP has me a little
buffaloed. I would like a book that will explain what each setting does and
how security works. Essentially, however I am using XP Pro at home, and what
I want to do is set things up so everyone can use the computer but they have
to go through me (administrator) to install software. Open to all
suggestions. I am in Canada if that makes a difference.
Please not this is cross-posted for maximum coverage.

- Windows XP >> Endless loopafter mobo changeI had XP on a machine for months with no prob... I
upgraded the mobo and processor from 450 mhz to 1.2 ghz,
but cannot get XP to boot now. It is in an "endless loop"
where it flashes an error for a splitsecond saying that a
problem has occurred and windows will be shut down...
If I put old mobo back, all is ok. Have also gotten third
replacement mobo with exact same problem.
How do I get XP back up with upgraded mobo?

- Windows XP Setup >> Downloading updates from NetI'm new to this email list and have just bought a new
computer with XP.
When I try to update using Windows Update and going to the
Net, all works well until I come to the license
agreement. At this point, I read the agreement, as much
as any of us does! <VBG>, and it asks me if I agree, but
there is no place to answer...no place to click, nothing.
I just close the window and it tells me I can't install as
I didn't agree to the license info.
There is nothing cruically required of me to update, but I
wanted to add something for the MVP 9.
Is there something I'm missing here? (BTW, I didn't set
up the computer and have very, very little knowledge of
how it all works, so please be very percise, if you can)
Thanks so much for any help...

Windows XP Security >> Administrator Account locked out.
I dont have a network administrator.
I am in a stand-alone in a workgroup of computers that share a HSIC on a
Lan.
I'm identified by my computer name and description.
I have 2 user accounts on my ( XP-SP2 ) PC, Administrator/Owner and
Limited/ Guest account ( which basically has no priveleges, rights
whatsoever ).
I somehow f*%k@! up changing the password on my administrator account and
now cannot log on as administrator and not allowed to access any
files/folders.
What is the best solution with the least data loss?

- Windows XP Support >> Error Code 105I'm not sure what happened, but I had to reinstall MOHAA on my new custom
system, and couldn't get it to install ( had imported it from my old
computer--that was not good!). I did a delete from the control panel, but
that didn't work, either. I went to the EA (game manufacturer) website to
see if there was something I did wrong. I had to do a manual delete from the
registry. Now when I try it, I get nothing. The Install Wizard starts up,
but then nothing happens. Once I got a "catastrophic failure" message. I
tried loading other games from different developers and got "Setup is unable
to run a program needed to proceed with the installation. Restart your
system and try again. Error 105" I have no idea as what to do. I tried
restoring to a previous state, but that didn't work. I thought it might be
the DVD/CD drive, but it reads other cds with Emails, pictures, etc. I don't
think it is gaming related, rather something I may have done during the
removal of the MOHAA series that messed up the registry or removed a program
from XP associated with the Install Wizard.
