- Windows XP Support >> XP Pro Install Problem - Missing or corrupt hal.dllI am installing a xp pro on new 250 gb sata drive. When XP tried to reboot
first time during install it said it missing or corrupt ntoskernl.dll. I
tried new install again and now I get missing or corrupt hal.dll.
Note: I noticed when XP asks which partition I want to install on I
initially see two: one is about 8(mb or gb don't remember) and the other
238GB. I tried deleting the 8 mb/gb but can't so I deleted the 238gb
partition and start over. However same problem with missing or corrupt
hal.dll.
Assistance is appreciated.

- Windows XP Support >> Device Manager blank - Action CancelledWhen I open the Device Manager it says in the window:
Action canceled
Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page
might be temporarily unavailable.
This is driving me crazy. I'm on the edge of reformatting and reinstalling
Windows...
I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2.
What I've done so far to troubleshoot and what I've found:
- Rolled back the registry two weeks which didn't solve the problem. Next, I
undid my registry changes so it was like I hadn't ever rolled it back.
- Had a clean virus scan with all Norton updates.
- Had a clean Spyware scane with all Spybot Search and Destoy updates.
- PnP service is running in the Services pane (I even tried starting every
service which did nothing as I assumed).
- PnP service is setup correctly from MSCONFIG ("Hide all Microsoft
Services" checkbox is not checked and "Plug and Play" is under the "Services"
tab).
- Security permissions are set correctly for the registry key
"HKLM\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM" (I cannot see the system name in the DM
so its not a security permissions issue; "SYSTEM" account has "full
permissions").
- Ran "SFC /purgecache" followed by "SFC /scannow" to no avail.
- Ran a disk check on my OS partition to fix file system errors; no problems
found.
- Same problem in Safe Mode.
Is there something I can do in the Recovery Console to repair my Device
Manager? If so how would I go about it?
I'm open to any suggestions at this point.

- Windows XP Setup >> Sharing a Printer on a Home NetworkFound a reference site with articles and pictures
http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article64-page1.php
Tip #2 talks about turning off Window's built-in firewall,
since it does not customize well, just blocks everything
Wife's computer came bundled with Norton Internet Security,
which does have an option to allow file/printer sharing
My computer uses the free Sygate Personal Firewall, which
also allows customizing to allow file/printer sharing
(Sygate was bought by Symantec, no more free software!)
(But, for now, the product is still on a download site)
http://www.simtel.com/product.download.mirrors.php?id=53687
Following the steps in the article, and configuring both
firewall products to allow file/printer sharing, now lets
me print to Canon 4200 printer on wife's computer, which
was a "test" so I will know how to configure her laptop
(when it arrives) to do wireless printing

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB ProblemWe have a USB device that goes undetected on XP when using certain USB

- Windows XP Hardware >> CD-RW won't work w/blank/burned diskI have a Plextor PX-W4824A CD-RW, and have updated to the most recent
firmware. It works fine with any 'manufactured' disk, audio or data, but
will not work with a 'burned' cd. The 'burned' cds DO, however, work fine in
the DVD-ROM. When I put a blank or previously burned disk in the CD-RW, I
get a green lite for about 15 seconds, then the lite turns amber and proceeds
to flash 4x with a pause, 4x pause, etc. until I eject the disk. Windows
Explorer shows the drive, and Device Manager says it's working properly. I
uninstalled the Nero software I was using, but that did not make any
difference. I believe the problem started after I installed Windows SP2, but
I'm not positive, since I mainly use the burner to backup data files every
few weeks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Windows XP >> Changing screen in IE
Hi Bill,
This is one way:
1) Open just *one* instance of IE
2) Use your mouse to stretch it to the size you want
3) Close the IE window, only using File>Exit from the menu on top
IE should open the size you want.

- Windows XP Security >> Service Pack 2 Install Skipping FilesI am trying to build an automation process to deploy XPSP2 to our network.
The problem is that all of our custom images have a very stripped down image
with things like outlook express and movie maker completely uninstalled.
Trying to do a standard install of xpsp2 errors out looking for file
"wabmig.exe" which I assume is part of the outlook express windows address
book. I need to get the regular install working before I can build the script
to due silent install and not interfere with users. I also get similar errors
about files like "mm2res2.dl" which is part of movie maker. I have seen
sections of update.inf file located in the same directory as update.exe of
the i386 folder and there are parts of it where I guess I could remove like
"CopyFiles=OE.Files"....
XPSP2 will not start at all now, because it cannot verify the integrity of
undate.inf
Can anyone help?

- Windows XP Support >> An issue with booting up the computerI just finished building a computer, and I installed Windows XP Home on it
(SP2). Everything runs and works just fine, except I cannot start the
computer without the Windows XP CD in the tray. It says, "Boot from CD:" and
then, "boot disk failure, please insert a system disk and hit enter." This
cannot have anything to do with the mainboard's BIOS, I think, because I
tried disabling everything but booting from the harddrive, yet I still get
that error message. Windows XP is paid for and activated, of course. I can
boot up just fine if I have the XP CD in the tray, but that can be a serious
irritation and I know that it is NOT supposed to work that way. Does anyone
know how to get rid of this problem? I have tried everything I can think
of... I know beyond a doubt that it is no kind of hardware problem, and I am
99% sure that it has nothing to do with the BIOS.. it is a windows-only
problem, of that I am very certain.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Movie Maker not found WinXP SP2 Home EditionI came to this site to download Microsoft Movie Maker to only learn that I
need to have either Win XP Pro or Home Edition SP2 installed. So, Im
thinking why didnt I receive this software when I updated to SP2 a month or
two ago. I just tried a minutes ago to see if there were any more updates
that I missed, but my PC is up to date and this copy(as all of mine are) is
completely legit!
Anyone encounter this or know what I can do in getting the Movie Maker
software?
Cheers, Chaser!

- Windows XP Update >> Windows Update KB896423 hangupsWhat's with this update? I've tried installing it on several Asus boards
(M2N-MX SE, M2N-MX, M2V-MX and some MSI boards. When you install this update
the computer will hang on the welcome screen and not go any further. You can
boot into safe mode, but the system will not load Windows unless the update
is removed.
Anyone any ideas? These are quite common boards based around Nvidia and Via
chipsets.
