- Windows XP Network >> routing traffic between network card and wirelessHello,
I have a PC with one network card (LAN) and a wireless card.
I would like to route some HTTP traffic arriving from the LAN card to
the wireless connection (so have both connections running at the same
time).
Do I need some sort of routing or proxy software to achieve this?
Thanks,

- Windows XP Hardware >> Fine working CDRoms in device manager shown in the unknow group instead of CDROM-groupHello,
I installed a week ago a new dvd-burner after putting out my 4x4
cd-burner(HP). All was fine. 2 days later i checked in the device manager
and noticed the DVD-Rom (Pioneer 106s) and the DVD-burner (NEC 1300) are
showing up as unknown devices. Properties says they are Class: unknown and
Factory: general cdrom stations, Status: working correct. Ok they work well
but this is annoying me. So i looked into the registry and found nothing
obvious that could change this.I did find the HP 4x4 burner still in the
registry (that was gone now, and that did have still Class CDROM, but the
Pioneer and NEC hadd Class *empty* . So i am pretty sure something went
wrong when i first booted up with the NEC and without the HP Of course i
tried to uninstall the drives (duh) but they come up again in unknown
devices. Last resource was windows recovery but the date was too long ago
now, so it was not an option. Using Windows XP. Have been searching for
hours on Google, nothing. Only thing i did try in the registry was delete
all HP references, no succes.
Ok, so the question is, which entries in the registry or inf files do i
change/remove for a reset?
TIA

- Windows XP >> Dual boot convert to ntfsThere is 4 computers (workstations) at the shop that are dual boot I suppose
because of buying upgrade versions of XP Pro. The other OS is 98 which I know
will not run on ntfs. So the question is if I use command prompt safe mode to
convert to ntfs what will happen to the 98 Os and programs installed on it.
Will it be deleated or be unknown amount of corrupt data taking up space on
hard drive. Or is there a way to delete 98 before converting to ntfs.
Thanks

reformatting the disk?

They slow down my computer, pop up windows, and use up my

Does anyone know how they gain control when a dial-up

- Windows XP >> Vista's mklink for XP?As some of you may know, NTFS reparse points have all that is needed to
implement file symlinks on Windows XP:
http://wesnerm.blogs.com/net_undocumented/2006/10/symbolic_links__1.html
As you can see in that blog entry, there is utility called "fsutil":
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/fsutil.mspx?mfr=true
that explotis that.
However, I was wondering if there is any "simpler" utility besides fsutil to
do that?
Here's why I ask, in case you have something to suggest:
I work (among other things) in an open source project. We use svn and most
developers are linuxers.
I was assigned the task of porting the build system to CMake. While on that
I couldn't help but to try fixing some longstanding issues.
One of the most annoying ones is this: the svn tree structure is different
from the build tree structure (a bash script is run to create the build-tree
out of the svn-tree).
The only "real" fix here is to unify the svn and build structures, but this
is so far from trivial (for a number of reasons) that is just impractical
for the time being.
However, along the discussion an interesting "hack" came about: create the
build-tree as a "shallow" rearrangement of the files in the svn-tree via
symlinks. This is trivial in posix... it is also equally trivial in Vista
thanks to mklink, but is not in XP and we need to support all three
platforms (being a platform indepenent open source project).
I posposed to use hardlinks, but that makes things complicated as I need to
make sure the "link" in the shallow folder doesn't outlive the "original"
file in the svn folder (otherwise it will silently go out of sync). Some svn
operations (revert, rename, etc) in the working folder could break the hard
link silently leaving an outdated source in the shallow build tree.
I know XP developers could have "fsutil" installed, and use it to generate
the shallow build tree with real symlinks, but I don't see how that can be
integrated into a transparent and platform-independent build enviroment
(which is the goal).

- Windows XP Support >> Problem Viewing Compact Flash Card Contents On WinXPIt used to be that, when I'd put the compact flash card from my
digital camera into my card reader, Windows XP (all security updates
installed) would pop-up with a box that said, "Windows can perform the
same action each time you insert a disk or connect a device with this
kind of file: Pictures
What would you like to do?
Below is a box that used to show the different programs I could use to
open the files or the options to use Windows Explorer to view the
files on the disk.
Now that box is blank; nothing shows up in it. I can't figure out
why, either. Has anyone had this happen before? If so, how did you
fix it?
Thank you.

CD is working. But why on this specific computer does it
freeze. Here is some hardware.

- Windows XP Network >> IP address assigned to Dial-up ConnectionAfter creating an incoming VPN connection on a XP Pro PC
I notice that when I check my adapters and IP's
using 'ipconfig /all', I see an additional IP assigned to
the PPP adapter RAS Server (Dial In) Interface. Is this
refered to as a 'virtual adapter'? The other IP address
accociated with this PC is listed under the NIC adapter.
This IP is statically configured on the XP Pro. What is
really puzzeling me is on the menu (IP addresses served)
of the router that issues the addresses DHCP, I see that
the same PC has four IP addresses that have been assigned
to it not including the static IP on the machine. When I
make the VPN connection I notice under the 'details' tab
in the 'properties' of the connection that two of the
IP's are listed, one as server and the other as client.
All in all there are five IP's aasociated to one PC that
has one NIC adapter and a Linksys switch between it and
the router issuing IP's by DHCP. The DHCP pool contains a
limited number of IP addresses that are public type
addresses. Whatever is taking place is using up more
addresses then I would like. Is there any way to reduce
the number? Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Multiple Troubles (IE, ActiveX, DirectX)Having the following problems:
IE will not do anything involving cookies (email, etc)
IE reports that ActiveX settings are wrong
IE will not reinstall with file from MS
DirectX 9 will not install (fails to copy file)
Possible Clue:
Message comes up and says that IE and ActiveX aren't "XP
approved," (when trying to install them) despite the fact
that they come from MS.
I've tried adjusting all my security settings, nothing
works. These seem to be related problems, but i can't
figure out exactly what the issue is, and I'm using
Netscape for the time being, which seems to work. Let me
know if any of you have thoughts.

- Windows XP Hardware >> video capture card recommendationsI am getting set up on my computer to convert my Camcorder tape
collection to DVD's. I have a P4 computer with 256 MB of RAM, Win XP
HE, 2 hard drives, (one 40 GB and one 80 GB) a new Pioneer CD burner,
both Nero and Ulead software. My next step is to purchase a video
capture card. I had a bad experience with an el cheapo Video capture
card, (lip sync problems) and when I went to the manufacturers web
page in hopes of downloading an instruction manual, they didn't have
one. (This was an ATI product) I returned that video capture card and
got my money back.
Looking for recommendations from those of you that have walked this
trail before me on video capture cards, the good ones and the ones to
stay away from.
TIA Loring H
A post thought. My camcorder is an older one that is analog, not
digital. Is that going to be a factor in my video capture card
selection?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Adding hard-drive - XP UpgradeI'm adding a new hard drive. My old one has become
tempermental and unreliable, plus I've messed things up
with some bad programs so I'm going to replace it. I used
to run Win2000 Pro but I bought the Windows XP *Upgrade*
to change operating systems. I plan to use the new hard-
drive and remove the old one. The question, then, is
this:
When I add my new hard drive, I want to start from a clean
slate - so can I install WinXP on the new hard drive
cleanly with the Upgrade disk?

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> MS Backup problems. Reasons?...I'm using WixXP-pro, with all the updates, would appreciate help on
understanding/solving this problem with "MS Backup" from a MVP or someone
very familiar with it.
Thanks,
George
----------------WHAT HAPPENED----------------
Yesterday I tried to backup PC's C: drive to an external USB "E:" drive.
The E: drive is fairly new, and was also recently re-formatted.
Backup ran very stop and go, paused for as long as 2-3 minutes at many
points, displaying odd files, doubt big, not sensible pause.... Ultimately,
it created maybe 8-10 warnings in the report, then eventually did early shut
down of MS Backup after about only 18,000 files and 5.2 GB backed up
(presumably). The total bytes on this PC is more like 20 GB. I made
another attempt, but same story. Here are both attempts...
The warnings in 1st attempt were things like..
WARNING: Portions of "C:\Documents and Settings\George's files\
.........(very long path/filename)..... cannot be read. The backed up data
is corrupt or incomplete.
WARNING: Unable to open "C:\Documents and Settings\George's files\
.........(very long path/filename)..... skipped. Reason: System cannot find
file
The warnings in 2nd attempt were things like..
WARNING: Unable to open "C:\Documents and Settings\George's files\
.........(very long path/filename)..... skipped. Reason: The semaphore
timeout period has expired
Could not access portions of directory "C:\Documents and
Settings\George's.... You may not have permission to open... or the
directory may be missing or damaged
----------------WHAT ACTIONS TAKEN----------------
So, I did a few things...
a) Defrag C:drive
b) Used "Disk cleanup" to get rid of temp files (but still there are MANY
(100's) left in C:\windows\temp
c) connected the external drive with its 2-foot cable directly to PC (it was
previously connected thru 6-foot extension cord, or thru USB-7-port-HUB)
d) replaced the 100GB external USB drive with ANOTHER external drive that
happens to be 200GB
c) Re-booted PC
d) Re-ran the backup...it went very fast...only a few brief pauses on
known-big files...report was perfect backup.
----------------QUESTIONS----------------
What was most likely possible reason(s) for the first two failures?
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Needed to defrag, that really fixed it
( )likely. ( )unlikely. ( )unsure. Too many temp files. Clearing them out
did the trick.

- Windows XP >> WindowsXP Local PolicyI think someone changed some settings on my son's laptop
at college, he has WindowsXP home edition and he have
never used a password to logon to windows. Now it is
asking for a password when it boots into windows. I
tried all of the trouble shooting such as leaving it
blank, safe mode, I even made a boot disk to change the
password. Nothing has worked. After entering the
window's password an error screen comes up saying "the
local policy of this system does not permit you to logon
interactively".
Can anyone explain what I need to do to correct the
problem? I tried to use Partition Magic to create
another partition so I could install WindowXP Pro but it
would not let me resize the partition. Not being able to
start windows is a problem plus I think I need
Administrator rights to do this. Is there any way to
change back the local policy to permit you to logon?
Thanks, any help would be appreciated.
