- Windows XP Network >> client machine not registering with DNSWe have "some" machines that fail to register with the dynamic DNS.
The machines are all part of the Active Directory, and I can see the
machines in the Computer OU. However nslookup on the machine name
fails. This only happens with a handful of machines. The rest of them
register with the DNS fine. All the machine are identical.
We use BIND for dynamic DNS.
I have already tried uninstalling / reinstalling the network driver,
repairing the TCP/IP stack, and re-installing the Printer and File
Sharing client.
Anyway to force the machine to register itself with the DNS?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Plug in new IDE HDD causes reboot on XP load?I recently built a new machine, and want to transfer the data from my
old rig. I have setup a dual boot Win98SE/XP system. Once all the
drivers were installed, I plugged my old XP drive into IDE 1 and it
was detected by the BIOS with no problems. I then tried to boot into
XP, but before it reaches the signon screen, the PC reboots! I have
tried running in safe mode, connecting the drive as slave/master on
both channels, and altering the boot order. Nothing helps. I know the
boot order is correct, because my dual boot startup appears every
time.
I suspect the cause may be that drive I plugged in also has a full XP
install on it, and is somehow interfering. I cannot think how this
could happen though. Can anyone let me know how to fix this problem?
Thanks.

- Windows XP >> Can't delete unwanted fileHi! :-)
I have a file at
"F:\furry images\EASYWEBLEACHTEMP\20071207-102948- Dark Natasha "
including the space between the a and " that every time I try to delete it,
I get the same bleepin' thing.
"Cannot delete 20071207-102948- Dark Natasha " cannot find the specified file
Programs that can "delete on next boot" do not work. Trying to delete from
safe mode does not work, gets the same error message.
What must I do to get rid of this annoyance?

- customize >> mount pointsAm I correct in thinking that it is not possible to mount a Unix (i.e.
Samba) sharepoint
in any other way than as a drive letter? That is, if I have a Unix drive on
the network, I can mount it as, say, F:\, but I can't mount it as
C:\mnt\UnixDrive\.
(I could mount the sharepoint in the way I want under CygWin, but it would
not be visible in that way to ordinary Windows programs.)

- Windows XP >> 16 bit apps in XPI have two 16 bit applications that run just fine when an
XP administrator is logged in, but when an XP limited user
tries to run them, a box pops up:
16 Bit Windows Subsystem
C:\DOCUME~1\karen\LOCALS~1\Temp\. A temporary file needed
for initialization could not be created or could not be
written to. Make sure that the directory path exists, and
disk space is available. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.
Close Ignore
I checked access priviledges on that folder, and both
Windows Explorer and cacls.exe agree the limited user has
FULL (F) rights to the folder. I tried changing the
environment variables to other folders, such as C:\TEMP.
As far as I know, 16 bit apps don't even know about the
registry, so it's not something application specific.
Why will this run as an administrator, but not as a
limited user?

- Windows XP Security >> How to load default policy settings?Hi,
I went to a school in Denver and for security reasons the
administrators there disabled wireless access. My laptop can't see any
wireless networks now, though the device manager shows the wireless
card is active and enabled.
I think they disabled a few other things that I don't know. I'm the
administrator of the laptop and always login as administrator to my
local machine. I don't want to uninstall and reinstall the whole
operating system.
Is there any way to load all the windows xp default policy settings?
Please help.
Thanks
Ganesh.

- Windows XP >> OEM XP loaded onto 2nd computer accidentallyMy younger son's computer was acting up, so my older son took his OEM version
of XP w/SP2 (German Version) and loaded it over the OEM XP (English version)
on his computer. The computer worked, but now comes a message saying that XP
must be activated. I know that you can't run XP on 2 computers, but my
darling children didn't when they did this without asking first. I tried to
turn-back his computer to an earlier date, but that didn't work. If I buy a
new version of XP, will I be able to install it? Can I de-install the German
version of XP from the promp in the safety start-up mode? I don't think I
can/should activate it due to the program already being on my older boy's
computer.
Thanks In Advance

- Windows XP Support >> Old drive won't start OS with new hardwareI have just put together a new system, which works fine with a scratch 10GB
hard drive that I just built.
When I try to use my old 80GB hard drive (which worked fine with the old
hardware), I can't get past the screen which warns that the hardware has
been changed. I have the recovery console installed, and I've tried Safe
Mode, however, it just keeps looping. What do I need to do in order for the
old drive to recognize the new hardware?
I don't mind re-registering the software, I just don't want to lose all my
data on the old hard drive!
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks,

- Windows XP Security >> partition problemi recently tried setting up a multi OS computer, and I tried installing Linux. Well, that installation has come and gone and its left me with this. I start the computer and a boot loader appears, I can enter Linux fine. But if i choose DOS to boot into XP, it starts with the load screen, then says two files are missing (the ones that scan the system right when it begins to boot), and it ends with a screen saying there was a major error or problem and it couldnt boot. So i put the restore cd in, about to reinstall XP and the first option comes up, and it displays a message saying it couldnt find windows partition!?!?!?!?!?!?! Any suggestions that don't involve formatting????????? Please I am desperate. If necessary, I have an external 60 gb harddrive. I will try to find a way to access my windows files and information (music, pics, etc) on the Linux OS, and then put onto the external harddrive... I hope i dont have to go that route, or i hope i can even access my windows files and information still!!!! please help me!!!

- Windows XP Setup >> Problem with XP Product ID acceptanceI recently lost the hard disk on my notebook which had win'98 installed. I
ordered a replacement disk with the XP-Pro image and went and purchased an
upgrade license to XP-Pro. The 25 digit code is not accepted. What could
be the problem? Is it that the 25 digit ID is related to the version of
XP-Pro? What I mean by this is that the license that I've received and the
disk are for XP-Pro with SP1. Now if the image is for the first release is
it possible then that the 25 digit code is unique for the original release
and the SP1 release? Does anyone know if that is the case? TIA Lugia
