- Windows XP Network >> Sharing FavoritesI have to logon to my laptop using different accounts
depending on whether I'm at home or at work. I'd like to
preserve as many of my settings as I can, avoiding the
need to reconfigure different apps between the two
accounts.
One issue is my IE favorites. I know that I can copy
favorites from one account to the other, but I was
wondering if there was a way of keeping them sync'd so
that they were always the same. Or better yet, just one
set that is used for any number of user accounts.
Is this possible?
Thanks,
Todd

- Windows XP Network >> Browsing problem with XP Home NetworkHere is my situtation. I have 2 computers with XP home,
connected to a hub. I setup one system using the Network
Wizard and then made the disk. I put the disk in the other
system and ran the wizard as well, just like the
instructions say. When I browse the network, I see the
workgroup name "mshome", but when open it I only see the
system that I am on and not the other computer. I did
disable the Firewalls too. Still no luck.
Any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Windows Update Is Not Installed - WinXP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811269
You are using a version of the AOL software earlier than AOL 8.0 Plus.
-and-
You use the AOL Web browser interface to access and download Windows
Updates.
The AOL Web browser that is included with versions of the AOL program that
are
earlier than AOL 8.0 Plus did not communicate correctly with the Windows
Installer software. As a result, Windows Installer may stop responding.
Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Updates fail to install and you receive error message 0x80070643 - WinXP
Check the C:\WUtemp to see if the Update files exist as being downloaded.
What
happens is that a folder is created for the update and inside the folder is
the
actual installation file. Once the install is successful the WUtemp folder
will
be empty.
You can download the update from the Catalog and save to be installed
later.

How to Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166
Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what
you
want, Click the "Go To Download Basket" link. Type in or browse to the
location
where you want the updates saved to and then Click the "Download Now"
button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

- customize >> Separator LinesIn my first Post, I wrote the following:
I use both WIN XP Home and Pro, and I have around 240
programs, not including all the associated links and
programs that go with those programs. I notice in
the "Start" and "Start/All Programs/" menus there are
separator lines (such as the small line directly above
the "All Programs") to help categorize your programs. I
would like to know how to add more lines, so I can
separate my "Start/All Programs" menu into different
categories, making it easier to find office, photo
editing, games, and other program groups.
I then Received a reply telling me how to create a new
Folder. (Why?) I also received:
Subject: Re: Start Menu Groups
From: "Delwin Lee [MSFT]"
<delwinl@online.microsoft.com> Sent: 9/21/2003 3:16:22
PM
You can't add separator lines. The one that appears
divides the "All Users"
programs list from the Programs list specific to the
current user.
I dont beleive this is true due to the fact that someone
put those lines there, therefore common logic tells me
that if they can add lines, so can I. All I wanted was to
partition my "Start/ All Programs" menu with lines. I
know how to add a folder and fill it with sub folders,
thats too easy, and not the fix I was looking for. Does
anybody have any ideas? I'm greatful for any assistance.
Thanks, Dale

- Windows XP >> No compressed folders in "Save In" listI was asked the question, "Why don't my compressed
folders show up in my 'Save In' list when I try to save a
newly created file."
My best guess at this was that compressed folders really
aren't folders, they are files. Therefore, they wouldn't
show up on the list since only drives and "real" folders
do.

- Windows XP >> Stat up Registry ProblemHi,
Can someone please help, this is really giving me a headache.
I have a problem with the programs that are listed in the run section in the
registry when the system starts up.
In the key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" are about
three programs that run on start up. They used to start normally, but now
they have seemed to have stopped starting on the system starting up. If I go
to the locations of the files that are listed in the reg key and double
click on them, they run normally. They
used to run ok, but now they have stopped for some reason.
These programs are not viruses, well I don't think so anyway, they're
Nortons Antivirus, mobsync and Ad-Watch by Lavasoft.
Does anyone know why this has happened and how I can fix this problem?
Hope someone can help,
Thanks
Best regards
Scott

Thanx for the reply. I'll check it out. Though, I must admit to being
bewildered at how i could violate a policy by providing a service. I
do not mean to charge for the product, just the download and
installation of it.
It isn't feasable to keep track of what goes on which computer. What I
would really want is a search agent that tells me which update to
install on which computer. Then, as you pointed out, check the KB
articles for the downloads, but I should already have them all on a
CD.
I'm basically wanting to help people with preventative maintenance,
for people otherwise unable or unwilling to do so.

- Windows XP Security >> Excel worksheets "ghost" scrollingMy system is Windows XP Home SP2 Small Business Edition
Current with critical Windows updates.
Windows Firewall is on.
Have McAfee VirusScan... no viruses found
Have run Adaware and SpyBot S&D... nothing unusual detected
Ran detect and repair with Small Business CD.
Windows Excel macro security is set to Low in order to run my spreadsheet
macros.
The problem... Excel spreadsheets randomly scroll up and down with no
interaction on my part. I have watched Task Manager processes to attempt to
determine what is running , but have had no luck. Something is running to
cause the spreadsheets to jump around, but I am at a loss to know what. Does
anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Any help would be much
appreciated. Thanks.

- Windows XP Setup >> @#%! Scripting Dialup Network Connections???Is it possible to automate the creation of dialup network
connections?
It must be possible somehow, as those CDs you get from
ISPs do it...
I have about 20 Dialup Network connections that I have to
create on every laptop I build and I am getting sick
of "right click>Copy Connection".
Any help would be great - I have looked at Windows
Scripting, as I thought this would be the obvious choice
of being able to do this task, but I couldn't for the life
of me figure out how to get it to DO IT!!!

- Windows XP Security >> Importing internet favoritesI am using Windows Pro and Home edition on two computers and have encountered
the same problem while trying to import internet favorites using "d" drive. I
get the wonderful warning that I can not save to this directory even though I
am the administrator and have not set up any other users or accounts. Anyone
have a clue what causes this behavior and how to rectify this problem? I DO
HAVE ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILAGES! Even though the computer says otherwise.

- Windows XP >> turn on restoreI have 2 hard drives each with a partition...C:D:G:H: and

system restore for it?

- Windows XP Hardware >> External HDD IssueI've got a SQL server that uses an external HDD to do backup/transactio
logs. The drive specifically has to be the "I" drive in order for th
scripts to run.
All was working fine untill I replaced the 5 external drives with ne
ones. Same size, same brand, different enclosure.
Now whenever I plug the drives in, they do not get an assigned driv
letter. The only way the server will see them is if I go into "Manag
your computer" and then assign the drive the proper letter.
This is one of those: I've never seen that before.
Do you guys have any ideas?
