- Windows XP >> What services are required for IIS and DAO & MDAC etc?Hi there,
I have a real frustrating thing going on... and I have not managed to sort
it out.
Last week I installed a service pack onto an app I use a lot.
The SP basically wiped my computer out to the point where I thought my hard
drive was stuffed.
Over the course of 3 days I managed to actually get the computer working
enough (albeit very slowly --> 25+ mins just to boot up XP) and I removed
that program I suspect might be a fault.
This sorted it out.
I had to use MSCONFIG numerous times whilst sorting the computer out.
It would seem that MSCONFIG disabled all the SERVICES (as it is designed to)
but for some reason it did so perminantly... i.e. it did not restore them to
how they were previously set up.
I then had to get a list off the net explaining which services I needed to
put back into Manual Start and Auto start mode. All was well...
Yesturday, however, I went to run an .asp based website I have on my local
IIS setup. It has a database that it accesses. Yet I could not longer access
the database.
The Site db access test determines that it does not have the necessary
permissions...
Yet I have not changed the permissions.
I am wondering if there is a service that needs to be running in order for
ADO and MDAC and ODBC etc to work properly?
Does anyone know? Or is there somewhere I can read more on this?
I must say, I have tried starting all that various services that I think
could be related but nothing helped.
Perhaps a whole lot of permissions did get changed during that crash... no
idea. But I have ensured they are set up as instructed in the asp app I
have... no go through. Perhaps ADO / MDAC etc need certain permissions set?
Gosh... I have no idea really!!
Thanks a lot...
My business is on hold until I get this running again...
Regards,
Jonathan

- Windows XP Network >> Vista Networking ProblemI am running Vista RC1 on a client machine. It cannot connect to any server
resources (e.g. Exchange, LCS, etc.) but can browse the server and the
Internet. It also can find other computers on the network.
I have disabled Windows Firewall, but the problem still persists.
Any help on the issue would be appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> need a couple sys files from sp1.cabHi, I need some old 1394 driver related files from xp sp1.cab. Any one
still have that around on their drive? I need ohci1394.sys, 1394bus.sys
from c:\windows\driver cache\i386\sp1.cab on a PC that has a pre sp2
install; should be there even if sp2 was added later. I need this in
order to override the XP auto driver replacement so I can put a custom
driver on my 1394 port. Thanks for any help on this!!

- Windows XP Security >> Win XP SP1 prob - no mouseI just installed Windows XP SP1a, but when my Toshiba
laptop restarts, the cPad (touchpad with screen) and
mouse no longer work. While it is starting up, the cPad
screen turns on... but when the XP blue startup screen
comes on, it stops working and so does my wireless mouse.
When I uninstall SP1a, everything works fine again. What
can I do? Is it really necessary to have SP1a? Toshiba
says my model is compatible.
Help please!

- Windows XP Setup >> Desktop suddenly shrankI was tooling along with my laptop display set at 800x600,
when suddenly (it may have been a stray key combination)
*bam* my desktop shrinks to about 6 inches across.
I checked my display settings, and it still said 800x600.
If I jack it up to 1400x1050 and drag the corner of the
"screen," the desktop fills the laptop monitor again but of
course fonts, icons, graphics and windows are too small.
I've of course restarted and cold booted and it's the same.
I'm making do by jacking up my font sizes and setting
everything on "large icons," but some Web graphics and OS
windows are not sizeable and are almost unreadable.
Any ideas on how I can get the display back to normal?
Display looks normal on bootup, then shrinks as soon as
Windows kicks in.
Thanks for any ideas.

- Windows XP Security >> Autocomplete not functioning...I also posted this under "General".
After reinstalling XP and installing all applicable
service packs and patches, autocomplete does not function
in IE. I am posting this under XP because I am also
having problems with the remember password option in the
POP3 setup in Outlook so I think this is a general XP
issue rather than being isolated to IE.
Here is what I have tried:
1. Verified autocomplete settings in IE GUI.
2. Verified auyocomplete settings in registry.
3. Disabled and reenabled settings.
4. Ran all steps outlined in KB # 306895.
The only step that resolved the issue was creating a new
user. The KB article referenced above suggests copying
the profile from the new user to the existing user if
this resolved the problem. However, I do not want to
lose the other settings the current account has.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Taskbar corruptionFrequently, when I log in, I find the separators on the Taskbar are in the
wrong places. It is not possible to put them right because some of them have
crossed over others and can't cross back. I can fix the Taskbar by deleting
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2\
in the Registry and re-starting Explorer; but it is getting to be a real
pain because it happens almost every time I log in.
Does anyone know what might be causing this, or how I can monitor my system
to find which program is doing it?

- Windows XP Security >> Broken PC-domain trust, forget local admin passwordI have something strange here !
I have a winXP Pro member of domain 2k.
BUT the PC - domain trust is brouken. I can see the computer in AD but I can
not manage it remotelyand I am informed that the trust between domain and
computer is broken.
I now need to gain access to manage the computer without formating it, so to
manage to unjoin and rejoin the PC from the domain.
The problem is that I dont know the local admin password !!!
I renamed the explorer.exe to logon.scr file (using an other PC), and I have
this system access.
I run the computer management mmc, but the reset password window does not
open.
I run computer properties, but the network indedification boxes are gray.
I can run cmd and regedit
Can anybody help me to reset local admin password ?
Thank you in advanced

message in the event viewer:
Event ID: 7023
The System Restore Service service terminated with the following error:

I have run the system file checker but that has not restored the service.
Also, when I try to access the System Restore tab in My Computer, the

Make sure the jumper pins on the hd(s) are set properly with other device on
the IDE cable if others exist. If all is correct,go to run, type:diskmgmt.msc
In
msc,L.click on the device,go to actions,all,select,make active..

What happens when you try? If you get error messages, please quote the
exact text.
If you get an error message about being denied access, you need to take
ownership of the files.

Frequently the start bar is inoperable at startup you

this is characteristic of anything that can be easily

like to specify the ip address, computer name, and I would also like to let
the computer know that this computer is a domain controller. Can someone give
me an example of the entry I would add to the hosts file?
I also have another question. Ok here's the situation. I have 2 routers, 1
server, and a few work stations. I have a cable modem internet connection
too. My workstations sit behind both routers. My server (webserver &
domaincontroller) only sits behind 1 of the routers. My question is...Is this
unsafe to have a domain controller sitting out there only behind 1 firewall?
Is there a better way (more secure) way I can set this up without having to
buy an additional server?
