- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> 21 XP critical updates.Hi all,
I recently had major problems with my PC & had to format & return to factory settings. My main concern was security, so I set up my firewall & antivirus. Without surfing the net, I then searched for critical updates & found 21, I decided to download the lot in one go, but when I click on add/remove programs, only about 14 appear?
I have checked on the Windows update site, & all appear there on installation history, can anyone tell me if the lot have installed, or whether more should appear in add/remove?
I have re checked for updates, but no critical updates are appearing, so I don`t know if this will help.
Many thanks for any replies.

partition correctly? In MY computer it shows the c drive with 2 colors, and
the available space is less than before..also it won't completely
defragment..shows a large amount as freagmented, but wont complete...is there

- Windows XP Network >> File sharing problemsI'm running a small wireless home network and I'm having a few problems.
Both computers are fully updated, running XP home sp2, all the firewalls are
configuered correctly my intenet connection is fine and the shared printer
operates fine. My problem lies in file sharing. I can access files from my
laptop that are stored on my desktop, but not very quickly. The other way
round it hardly works at all, if ever.
I think the problem may lie with egistery entries? I think the problem
started when I had to re-setup the network.
Any help really appreciated

- Windows XP Support >> Computer restarts after being turned offProblem....
a customers pc reboots all on it's own after shutting down.
After turning the pc of in the usual way from windows, the pc shuts down and
then restarts right away.
Even if the power button is held in then it keeps on restarting over and
over again.
Nothing set in bios to auto restart it if power goes down.
No settings to wake on Lan.
It's as though the power button is switching on it's own.
Any ideas?

- Windows XP Setup >> Problems with Office XP and VisualStudio.Netam running Office XP and VisualStudio.Net on a Windows
XP Pro System. All licenses were purchased through the
College I attend in the evening, and as far as I know are
full functionality.
I believe after I installed SP1 for XP, I started having a
problem with Office and .NET. Whenever I try to start
either program, I get a small window that says it's
performing an installation. I can either allow
the "install" to run it's course and use the programs, or
press the cancel button, but the window comes back
whenever I try to Save, cut, paste, or just about any
other action.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> funny problem with titles and creditsHi:
It's several months ago since I don't use WMM, but it used to work properly.
Now when I try to add a title, it just does nothing - when I click to the
ready link it does nothing and when I click to the change animation link an
empty list of effects is displayed. Same with credits: the link doesn't
work. You can see the screenshots at:

My system is win xp home, sp2
Any idea? (especially the empty list maybe a hint).-
I already tried reinstalling WMM, the full sp2, and re-registering all wmm
files, but didn't work.
Thanks.

Windows XP Network >> cleaning up my network places
I have a 5 windows xp home and professional computers that have multiple
entries that show up when I look at my network places. I know from what I
have read in the web and in this news group that the information displayed in
my network places comes from the master browser. I have also used browstat
to see the status of my network and everything is okay.
I just want to know how to remove the enteries that are not working any
more. I have disconnected the shared network connections on the windows xp
computers that are not available anymore, but I would like to know if I can
just delete the enteries from the master browser in my network places if they
are not working any more or if it is even possible to remove the enteries
from the my network places (and be able to control what is seen here). I
have 77 shared folders, some of which don't exist as some computers have been
re-named and what not and thus incorrect entries exist. Thus what is the
best way to clean up this mess and keep it from coming back?

Each computer maintains its own list of network places. There's no
single place you can go to remove entries from all of the computers
simultaneously.
To remove multiple entries from My Network Places on a particular
computer, highlight them all at once (Ctrl-click), right-click one of
the highlighted entries, and click Delete..

Windows XP Network >> cleaning up my network places
I have the problem of a computer that can't see other computers on the
network. I looking at the same type of problem as originally posted.
Currently the computer that apparently can't see any other computer, still
remembers what it used to see so I don't exactly know what it can see. If I
delete all the entries, how soon will it be before I see what the computer
really sees on the network.
I can ping other computers and initially would suspect that Norton Internet
Security is the problem of other computers really that are not present in
places like Windows Explorer. However, I can't figure what the computer is
really seeing.

Windows XP Network >> cleaning up my network places
Thanks for the reply.
I not at the network where the problem occurred.
I did a search on checking master browser and http://www.howtonetworking.com
stated BROWSTAT.EXE did the checking.
I did a search on BROWSTAT.EXE and the Microsoft web apge stated that
Windows XP SP2 Support tools had browstat.exe. I downloaded and installed but
found no browstat.exe listed when I opened the support tools help . I tried
to redo the the install but the software required unistall. I selected
uninstall. I decided since I was just reinstalling to not reboot until after
the reinstall with complete box checked. Then I rebooted. Still no browstat
in support tools help.
I decided maybe browstat.exe was there even if it wasn't listed in the
support tools help. Back to http://www.howtonetworking.com. On the web page
was stated "use command browstat status <domain> or browstat stats
\\<server>. Problem here is I had a peer to peer network that was not a
domain or had a server.
I tried browstat status and got Master browser name is: HOM200OF001. However
following that was Could not open key in registry, error = 5 Unable to
determine build of brower master: 5. What do I do with this error?
Assuming the Master browser has a problem, what is the next step?

- Windows XP >> Desktop.ini opens on startupAll of a sudden Windows XP Pro has begun to open Desktop.ini in Notepad at
the end of the bootup process. Near the end of startup the file appears on
screen. Everything else seems to be working normally. The contents of the
file are a single line:
[.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@shell32.dll,-21774
I know of no recent changes to the system. I have XP Pro SP1 with all
critical updates. This is a Toshiba laptop with 512 MB RAM.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Gene

- Windows XP Security >> PasswordsI recently went on vacation after having my uncle set me
computer up for me with Windows XP. Well, I got back
today and forgot that it was passworded and I have no
idea what the password is. I called him to ask and he
had forgotten too. Is there anyways to get into my
account without having to start everything all over again?

- Windows XP Hardware >> Machine shutdowns over and over againHello,
I see there is a lovely virus going around again, but what does it do to
your machine?
I'm worried that my second machine has it. When I load it up, everything
seems fine, but after I've typed in my login password and got into Windows
it automatically starts to shutdown (like I have selected it from the Start
Menu). I thought it might be the power button being stuck but then it would
shutdown on the login screen. And it's not because the machine is over
heating as the temperature in the BIOS is fine and there is no alarm going
off (which I've set up).
Any ideas why it's doing this?

- Windows XP >> Managed DirectxJust bought a new Toshiba P25-S487 laptop with 17"
screen. It has XP home pre-installed. I was able to
install all the XP Updates except for one which downloads
but refuses to install. It is "Managed Directx". Tried
installing it several times but installation fails.
Microsoft will not give me free support because XP was
pre-installed by Toshiba (OEM) and referred me back to
Toshiba. NO HOPE OVER THERE! I am sure someone has a
solution.
Thank You

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> Windows XP lag - Windows Explorer lagWindows XP lag - Windows Explorer lag
I've P4 1.8GHz, 512MB ram, Windows XP that works worser than my old
386. Everything happens because dirty in the windows register. When I
attempt to copy, cut, delete, move, and right-click some file or
folder the machine locks-up for about 30 sec. I found it happens
because windows XP look for every entry in
"HKEY_CLASS_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers". There was an winzip
entry, but I not have winzip installed so windows keep searching the
entire registry for the DLL that was referenced by the winzip entry.
Not satisfied in not show me any error message it search the entire
registry again and again every right-click.
If you have the same symptons try to look in this key.

- Windows XP MovieMaker >> Can't Import .AVi from Digital CamcorderI own a samsung handicam. When I try to import my videos off of this into
movie maker, i get this error message:
the file _______ cannot be imported because the codec required to play the
file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download
and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to
import the file again.
I have looked online and it appears that this codec is codec 45. I have
tried to find a free download of this, that is compatible with microsoft XP.
I have also tried to play this in Windows Media Player and have only gotten
the audio from my video files to play.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

- Windows XP Hardware >> Windows was unable to complete the disk checkWhen checking a HDD partition I receive the following error:
"Windows was unable to complete the disk check"
I tried chkdsk and it worked, no bad sectors were found with chkdsk.
I had been using the HDD with a rack with a fan but as the fan needed to =
be replaced I was advised by a service representative that the fan was =
not needed and also that the HDD had a temperature protection just in =
case (I don't know if it's true). The HDD temperature increased and =
while I was actively copying data from one partition to another, when I =
returned, the PC was restarted and on boot there was a "Disk Error" =
message. After another reboot it worked but some registry files were =
corrupt and Windows needed to be reinstalled. I suspect that the HDD =
reached max temperature, stopped working, causing the PC to restart and =
while it was overheated, the boot error showed up. I don't know if this =
is the reason. Now I can't check the HDD. What could have happened, how =
can I check the HDD and how true is the information that Windows =
returns?
