- Windows XP Network >> Remote Access Manager will not StartI upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro today and now the Remote
Access Connection Manager, Remote Access Auto Connection
Manager, and the Internet Connection Manager will not
Start. I receive "Error 5: Access is denied" when trying
to start the RACM and "Error 1068: The dependancy group
failed to start" on the RAACM and the ICF.

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB HubI just bought a 4 port external usb hub, its usb2.0 and comes with power
adapter. I plug it into my laptop (it has usb2.0) but nothing is detected, I
have XP pro SP2.
The hub has a blue LED which lights up, so I know it is connected. I
connect my USB flash dive onto the hub and and the light on the flash drive
goes on for 1 second, but my laptop still detects nothing.
I've tried updating all the usb controllers.
Please help

- Windows XP >> unable to double click?Within the last week I've had about 5 systems that are having this problem.
They are unable to double click on My documents folder on the desktop and
also unable to double click on any zip files. Only way around it is to go to
explorer and open winzip to open the zip files. If any body has come across
this let me know, its annoying and I don't want to re-image systems due to
this.
Thanks,
Dax

- Windows XP Setup >> Right Click DesktopHello,
After installing 4/06 updates from MS, when I right-click my desktop, my
computer just pauses for 30 seconds - eventually the dialog box shows up.
It never did it before and none of my other computers without the update do
it. It is very annoying and time consuming. Any patches or fixes short of
uninstalling the updates (they won't show up in Add/Remove programs anyway.)
Thanks,
Bob

the installation was successful. On re-booting the
computer and running Win. Update again, I'm being told to
install it again. How can this problem be resolved? Does
anyone have any ideas?

- Windows XP Hardware >> The best upgrade?I know that conventional wisdom dictates that the easiest PC upgrade
is to increase the size of the memory.
But in my particular case,if I were to do one thing, should I increase
memory to 2GB, replace my old video card (all-in-wonder 9600, no dvi
output) or add a faster (SATA) hard drive?
Details of my system:
2 Corsair 512 MB PC3200 DDR400, Value Select
AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 2.4GHz, 512k Cache, Socket 939
Asus A8V with Audio-GB.LAN-S.ATA RAID (Socket 939) (4 memory sockets)
2 EIDE internal drives

- Windows XP >> folder-file tasks in explorerMy folders are messed up... My Pictures shows "music
tasks" instead of "picture tasks" in the left pane.
Program Files shows "picture tasks" instead of "system

get Program Files to become hidden again (the option
to "hide this folder" is only available in the system
tasks area of the left pane... ie) picture tasks
(slideshow, etc) has replaced system tasks

- Windows XP Support >> DebuggingHi,
I installed and uninstalled:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) (x86)
- Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)
However, my pc has set as default Visual Studio Just-In-Time Debugger as my
pc's debugger. What setting needs to be changed so that I can set the
original debugger as default.
Yesterday I downloaded Microsoft's debugger, dbg_x86_6.6.03.5, but it hasn't
helped.
What can I do and how do I do it to fix this problem?

Windows XP Network >> Windows xpe dial up networking problems
Hi all,
having started work in the thin client systems arena, i have
encountered a wonderful bug in a large section of the thin clients
being produced - the networking has been cut and slashed to shreds.
my initial problem was simply, trying to install a generic modem driver
in order to attach my wavecom gprs modem. the problem? there is no
generic modem driver on xpe.. there are NO modem drivers. at least not
on this version (this is manufacturer standard incidently, i had
changed no settings by this point)
finally, after battling to get a modem installed, i got one up and
running, setup on com3 without any complaints, conflicts or major
issues. it recognised in the device manager as active and was able to
be used.
upon creating a dial up connection using the windows wizard, it
immediately became unavailable - the error message being "unavailable -
device missing." this was before i got to check or change any settings
on the account. when i checked the properties of the dial up
connection, in the modem field it read "modem removed - missing device
(com 1)"
this, despite there being a functional modem set up on com3.
i then went to the groups and have had no luck finding any solutions to
this problem.. my suspicion is that the networking has not been
installed properly, which would result in a reload of xp. however, this
is not xp, this is xp embedded.. no way i can do a recovery install.
this happens on every unit i've tried so far, so it's not isolated.
in desperation, i followed a microsoft support base articles advice
which had a step requiring the clearing of the autodiscovery/autopurge
information in the registry, which landed up in a unit bluescreening on
boot! the exact stop message being 0x0000007f (faulty drivers - always
a possibility, though i haven't done any driver installations beyond
the modem, overclocking - not possible as none had been done, or faulty
components - unlikely due to it occuring after a software change)
so, i'm one thin client pc less, and no joy yet. my apologies for the
long post, but i wanted to detail the fact that i have taken steps to
resolve this without joy, including having a look at many posts on the
board.
further information -
modem is external wavecom fastrack gprs radio
have connected to com1 with no joy (modem detects, dun doesn't)
have connected to com3 via a usb to rs232 converter with no joy (modem
detects, dun doesn't)
have connected the modem to a pc, running xp sp2 and it connects
perfectly.
tried to create a pppoe connection, but it yields the same problem
(unavailable device on com1)
have checked registry entries in telephony, searched for entries
containing modem com port.
have used the gpe to check the default internet connection settings
ensured that the appropriate services were running.
ensured that tcpip connections were working on the onboard lan
anything beyond this is beyond me.
help!
Regards,
Kaleem

- Windows XP Network >> Network problems after window update KB832483I have 2 home computers and a laptop all networked with a
hub and cat5 cables. The main computer which connects
directly to the internet is running XPhome, as is the
laptop, the other PC is running XP Professional. I have
had no network problems for months until I recently
installed SP1 from the Microsoft site. After
installation tbe internet connection could not be shared
and files on the computers could not be shared. I
uninstalled SP1 and the problem was resolved. I
immediately got an Automatic Windows Update notification
for KB832483 (Security Update for Microsoft Data Access
Components). Being wary, I created a restor point before
installing the update the next day. Once again, the
internet connection cannot be shared and only files
between the 2nd PC which doesn't connect directly to the
internet and the laptop can be shared. I tried system
restore but it won't let me restore to any point before
the update was installed. Can anyone offer anything to
try?

- Windows XP >> User accounts files on old hard drive.I received any error when staring windows that my hard drive was corrupt. I
tried to boot under safe mode all the system files and drivers showed up on
the screen then nothing the computer shut down. When I tried again I
received a smart failure and press f1 to continue. Still I was unable to
boot up using safe mode.
So, I purchased a new hard drive and reinstalled windows XP. I also
purchased a USB hard drive holder. I am able to access all the files on the
hard drive using windows explorer but the ones which was under a user
account. All the shared files are available. Not any files saved to the
desktop or in the My Documents of that user account.
Does anyone know how to gain access to those files. I tryed resetting the
attrib to all files on the old hard drive it did not work.

- Windows XP Hardware >> USB card reader problemAll of my USB devices are working just fine. When I plug
in my USB card reader, my WindowsXP SP1 detects the name
properly, then error message pops up saying there "was an
error installing this device, the service for this device
is not identified properly." Then it loops it once more
time, as if to detect the card a second time, and the
error message pops up again (this is in the automatic new
hardware setup that XP launches everytime you plug in PNP
device.)
I checked dev. mgr, and sure enough there are two of the
same card reader. There are also two new removable drives
in My Computer. Suprisingly, when I plug in a card for it
to read, the data is read/write just fine.
Please excuse the long message, I just wanted to be as
precise as I can. I was wondering why it won't correctly
detect the card reader. I've also tried buying a
different card reader and it does the same thing. TIA for
any help.

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> My IE Shuts Down w/ no WarningHello,
When I do things such as go to websites like
www.fandango.com or run virtual tours on www.realtor.com
my IE (ver 6.x) crashes. No error message, it just
closes down. Does anyone know of some download I can get
to correct this problem? I use WinXP Pro. So it seems
IE is when running websites having some sort of
embedded video routine. Am I missing some sort of
decoder? I have never had this problem
until maybe 6 months ago. I otherwise have no problem
running video files on, for example, Media Player.
Thank you
Mike

- Windows XP >> Windows drag too slow and leave trailsI was having erratic operation and error messages at
various times when using XP Home, so I decided to reload
a fresh copy, after formatting the C: partition.
Everything seems to be OK now except there is an annoying
problem when I drag any window.
When dragging a window the window does not stay up with
the pointer, it lags behind and leaves shadows than
catches up when I stop the pointer where I want the
window. It's acting like a pointer would act if pointer
trails were turned on to the max. I reloaded windows
twice and same thing. A fix would be greatly
appreciated, if anyone knows.

- Windows XP Basic >> Yahoo images won't show....I think I figured out why my yahoo images (mail, search, etc icons) won't
show. The browsers (Firefox, IE6) won't connect to
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com. I've tried allowing them to show the
pop-ups in the Tools>options>content> allowed sites, but still I can't see
the images.
Any ideas why this doesn't work on the desktop pc, but works fine with the
laptop, even though both pc's use winxp sp2?
Thanks

- Windows XP Hardware >> Only 1 speaker worksI have a Toshiba Sattelite P20 laptop with integrated stereo speakers.

- Windows XP Support >> Extra Hard DrivesHello-
I have 2 Extra Hard drives on my computer. They were set-up and installed by
someone else who I can not longer contact.
They were working just fine untill I goofed-up the BIOS or something else,
I'm really not sure where.
The 2 extra hard drives show up in my BIOS but Windows doesn't "See" them.
It's like windows doesn't even know that they are there.
Does anyone know what I might have done? Is there someway to make windows
find them?
My system drive is a Sata drive that works just fine. My 2 extra drives are
pluged into a card in my mother board.
Like I said they were working just fine until I did something in my BIOS. I
may have made the problem worst by goofing around with my "System
Configuration" trying to get windows to "SEE" them.
Help Please.......

- Windows XP >> Windows Task ManagerWhile working on an XP machine, one of the programs
locked up. I did an ALT-CTRL-DEL to shut down the
offending program. I hit Task List, where normally the
Windows Task Manager comes up. Instead of the Windows
Task Manager, it went straight to the Performance tab
(where you see the CPU usage, etc.), only it was "stand-
alone". You couldn't get to any other part of the
Windows Task Manager. Couldn't shut down the offending
program in any way. So then, we rebooted, hoping that
would clear out any strange thing going on, but the same
thing happened when hitting ALT-CTRL-DEL; task List
again. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening
and how to fix it? Thanks for your help.
