- Windows XP Support >> Add/remove programs and rundll32.exeHi
When I try to uninstall programs via add/remove programs my system hangs
indefinately.
If I open add/remove programs the list populates ok, I can choose remove,
then it hangs. In task manager a rundll32.exe process is taking 100% cpu
usage. I also get the same scenario if I try to use the program uninstaller
tool in CCleaner.
I've carried out a full scan with Spybot, AVG Anti-spyware, and NOD32 AV
(all fully updated to the latest definitions) and also run sfc /scannow.
There are no events or error messages, system just doesn't respond until the
offending rundll32.exe process is halted.
Hope this makes sense, Thx in advance

I've tried to find out what i can do, but the only thing i could actually find was something about re-installing windows and that the registry didn't change( or something like that) and that plug n play wouldn't go looking for my audio devices again. (make sense? this came from a windows 98 user

my computer because the VS Scan locks up at one partcular Windows System
File. I am beginning to think that it may be corrupted? My options are:
1. Delete the file and hope Windows XP continues to work or
2. Have someone send me this file and copy it over the corrupted file.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Ole DB\MSMDINT.DLL
Please provide me with some assistance. Thank you.

- Windows XP >> no boot, system halts at mup.sys in safe mode, now what?Greetings,
I went through just about every solution on this forum and finally gave up
and reinstalled Windows XP Pro. Now the machine will boot, but all of my
applications will not work because (1) they cannot find the product keys
loaded when they were installed, or (2) cannot find a .ini file which is on
the disk in the correct spot.
All files from the old disk have been transferred to the new disk unless the
file to transfer was in use. I started off with a straight clone of the
drive, but the close would not boot with the same error that I started with.
I would like to avoid reinstalling every application I had on the disk if
possible. Is there a way to find/copy/update the registry entries and
anything else I need?

Windows XP Update >> Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2
Hi. Here is my scenario. I had to reformat my hard drive. I reinstalled XP
Home, and because of the fact that I am on dial up, my friend provided me
with the SP 2 on disk. I ran the install program, and everything worked fine.
I then logged onto windows update to download all of the patches. (count 54).
I received no errors about downloads and installs. They said they all
installed correctly, as far as I remember, and I restarted my computer.
However, I have 54 of those KB****.log files in my windows directory, and
they all have errors in it such as stating that the update.ver file is not
correct, and that files such as sp4.cab does not exist.
In addition, when I go into my add/remove programs, the only program that is
listed is the windows 1.3 installer, and the windows service pack 2. Should
the additional subsequent patches be listed as well? I know that when I go to
the windowsupdate site, it says that I don't need to install anything new.
Do any of you think that the problem was that it was a fresh install, that
didn't even have SP1 on it yet, or was it because I installed from a disk? Do
I actually have these updates and the log files aren't anything to worry
about?
I have posted below an example of one of the 54 KB******.log files. I also
have the windowsupdate.log file, but it is HUGE, so I'm not sure what to post
regarding that. Please let me know if anyone needs to see anything from it.
I've looked it over, and haven't found anything, to my knowledge, that seems
ominous. Anyone have any suggestions?
Sorry this log is so long, I'm not sure what, if anything, should have been
left out.
I will be posting the log in a nested reply to this post.

Windows XP Update >> Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2
The KBxxxxxx.logs are created during the install of updates. Nothing
amiss there.

Did you put a check in the box to " Show updates " ?
Go to Start > Run > type in
cmd
Click OK
At the Command Prompt type in
systeminfo
Press Enter
What is listed next to HotFix(s) ?
You can copy what's in the command window by pressing CTRL C, paste that
into a text file, and then remove entries except for HotFix(s).
Then post the info into your reply, please.

Windows XP Update >> Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2
It says that
'systeminfo' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
I tried running this command from the default documents and settings prompt
and the c:\ prompt. Same error.
Im on XP Home. Does that not have this option?
However, I went back into add/remove programs, and clicked the "show
updates" box, and all 54 now showed up, and said they are intalled and on.
Thank god.
any ideas as to why I got so many failures in my logs?
I did indeed notice that the list of the updates preceeded my listing for
service pack 2. Maybe the updates were for correcting problems with SP1, and
that's why I got those errors? (As this was a fresh reinstall of windows
home, and did not, in fact, have SP1 on there.) Still, since I installed SP2
first, before I went to get the updates, I'm wondering why it did that.
Anyway. I'm thinking on upgrading to Pro. I really need it, anyway. Maybe
COMPUSA has a labor day sale today and I can catch a break on a deal.

Windows XP Update >> Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2
Forget systeminfo. As long as the updates are installed, that's what
matters.
The listing is in alphabetical order, thus, SP2 is below the updates.
Now, some of the updates may have failed. There should be 60.
That's why I requested you copy what systeminfo contained so that you
wouldn't have to do it manually.
There are automated tools that will inform you of which updates are
still needed. One of them is the MBSA:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/mbsa2/default.mspx
The link to download it is on that page.
Recommend that you post back with what it identifies as missing prior to
doing anything further.
Let's see if KB922616 can install from a manual download :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a6e2cb0a-146f-4300-95cb-7078ce9f9844&displaylang=en
Save it and then close all open programs, browsers, etc.
Now try to install it.

Thanks. Do I need to disable my firewall for this to work? I noticed it
needed my ip address.

Windows XP Update >> Many KBxxxxx.log failure files after trying to patch SP2
Thanks! Here is the log: Everything seems to check out. The only thing I was
wondering about was that instead of a green check mark next to the incomplete
auto update criteria, it had a blue asterisk. Is that bad? No Yellow x'es, or
anything, thnak god.

We downloaded a program and want to delete it (using
Windows XP Home edition). The compuetr says it cannot

protected and that the file is not is use (it is not).
Any ideas what I can do?

- Windows XP Setup >> Install of XP Home Doesn't Recognize MouseHello, My sister gave me her computer that had come with XP Home, but she had
put XP Pro on. She wanted to keep the XP Pro license for her new computer,
so I installed the XP Home over the XP Pro, reformatting the hard drive in
the process.
It got to the screen asking me if I was connected to the Internet to
register the software when I noticed the USB mouse was not responding. I
tried several different USB ports to no success, and I was unable to click
the no radio button, so I hit the reset button. I hope that wasn't a
mistake. It rebooted and came to the XP desktop, but there are no icons on
the desktop besides a recycle bin and the mouse still does not work. The
system tray has the message asking me if I want to take a tour of XP.
How do I get the USB mouse to work? It is a functioning mouse - I plugged
it into this computer and it works fine.
HELP!

- Windows XP Perform Maintain >> help.....help.....helpBecause of a problem I am having I need to access my
WindowsXP CD. The portion of the CD that I need to
access is the recovery mode. Before I can move forward
it asks me for my Administrator password which I type in
and it keeps telling me that the passwod is not valid.
This is the same password I use on the sign on screen
with no problem. Can you please be of some assistance in
the resolution of this issue so that I can access the
CD? Thanks in advance for your help.

- Windows XP Security >> can't delete registry entriesI'm trying to clean up after a virus infection on an XP Pro SP2 machine. I
have a list of all the registry entries added by the virus, and want to
manually delete them. I can find them easily enough, but when I try to
delete them I get an 'unable to delete all occurrences' message (or words
very similar!).
I'm not very experienced in editing the registry - I usually use a util to
keep it tuned - and I know how dangerous it can be. But although I've
removed the virus exe from the machine, and prevented firewall_anti from
loading or running, I still have all these registry entries that I'd like to
get rid of. What's the right way to do it please? I'm right-clicking the
reg entry concerned and choosing delete. Edit/Delete gives me the same
message. As I say, I have what seems like an accurate list of the reg
entries made by the virus (from Sophos).
Any pointers greatly appreciated, thanks

- Windows XP >> DVD ROM Freezes ComputerWhen I try to open any DVD or any kind of disc in my DVD ROM ( Dell XPS400
Dual Player), my computer automatically freezes up. I can hear the disc try
to start up for about 5 seconds, then shuts down. My next click will start
the freeze, and all icons disappear from desktop. Have to restart. Have tried
defragment, disc cleanup, counterspy. Still same results.

- Windows XP Network >> Upgrade from XP home edition to XP ProfessionalI have just recently bought an acer 3000l that has XP home edition, with
bluetooth, IR Port etc. However, I need to be on our work network. because of
the home edition, I am unable to see the server and share files with my work
colleagues. As a result, a friend told me that i could upgrade to XP
professional in order to be able to use my office network properly. could you
therefore advice me on how I can obtain patches for this upgrade that will
enable me to get the full functionality of networking?

- Windows XP Update >> 0x80070020This is the error I'm getting when I'm trying to update the Windows. I got
60% when I started downloading and then got error 0x80070020.
I'm wandering if the other four people, who got this similar problem with
mine and posted the question about this error before me, did solve the puzzle
and were able to update their Windows...???.
Please help!
